The Depths not be advertised is what really makes finding them so great!
@Elite02k

I mean, they kinda are with the scene of the bokoblins mining, but that also looks small enough to be a cave system, and they did advertise caves. It was a huge relief to find the depths as big as they were when I first got down there and looked at the map, by the 3rd or fourth Light root I realized that these aren't cave systems, but rather a whole nother map under ground.

@@_Mikeebeed_ To be fair the Depths *really do* feel like a different dimension; It's literally the Hyrule map upside down. Kinda like the *Dark World* that keeps appearing in other Zelda games. Cut them some slack, it was totally plausible at the time
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was expecting a few caves, haha. Instead, we got a LOT of caves, and then the Depths had nothing to do with the caves. In retrospect a Dark World of some sort should've been anticipated, but it seemed like the game was already so huge that doubling it would be unthinkable. I think Link to the Past is the first game that used the Dark World concept (as in an entire world that is some sort of dark mirror of the regular world, not just an "evil dimension").
@StormsparkPegasus

@@RF-Ataraxia Yeah that's what's ingenious about it. It uses the exact same level geometry as the surface world. It's a really creative way to re-use assets to save space. What they did wasn't so much flip it upside down as invert the height map (flip the sign on the Y axis). Which is super easy for a computer to do.

I think the ghost soldiers in the depths are the same soldiers who died in the calamity. They give more modern weapons and some of them are found directly under the monuments Zelda dedicated to the people who died in the calamity

It also makes you wonder if they're planning something big, seeing as one disguised themselves as *spoiler* Zelda. I did find it very intriguing about the plant life in the depths which adds a whole different beauty to it. I thought the depths was just gonna be like all caverns with glowing rocks and nothing else but they actually added very weird stuff down there making the world feel like a whole different planet. That feeling is amplified when you look above the ceiling and there seems to be like fog up there making it look like a dark cloudy sky. I always wanted a Breath of the Wild area to be on a different planet but the depths makes it feel like that in Totk. But it mostly feels like I’m in a dark world with heavy supernatural elements. And speaking of Supernatural elements when it comes to ghosts. Sure you meet spirits of the champions and king and the luminous stones but they are just stones however nothing in terms of actual ghosts in the overworld. I feel like Totk has more of that compared to BOTW.

Here's a list of every parallel (that I'm aware of since I'm typing this while watching the video) All largeish bodies of water become impassable walls. All surface shrines are lightroot All stables are armored lynels All elevated surfaces become depressions Vice versa for depressions on the surface into elevation Most large towns have an abandoned mine under them This also applies to smaller settlements, such as Kara Kara Bazaar Forests become groves of the depths trees This one I'm not 100% on but I think every larger hylia statue is a bargainer statue.

My first descent into the depths was via the Mount Rhoam Well. Coincidentally, it’s the chasm farthest away from a lightroot, and even has a giant mine in the way between the nearest one. Honestly the Depths were my favorite parts of the game, taking my favorite new mid-boss, my favorite character from Age of Calamity, giving me a big map I wasn’t going to instinctually fly high over because of past experience, all the fun pieces of worldbuilding in the Yiga journals, seeing how they deal with the depths and their perspectives of familiar gameplay mechanics, looking at their versions of the Zonai vehicles, it’s all so great, the sky just doesn’t compare

22:10 - 22:57 i think it's the second, as the bargainer statue's impartial view on good and evil means he wouldn't see worshipping ganon as something that makes them lost souls in the first place. on the darker side though i wonder if over exposure to living in the depths would eventually corrupt the yiga members like the gloom enemies (i know the gloom harms them as they carry sundelions, but we're talking long-term here), or if it's only monsters who can fuse with it.
@saullyboi8666
@saullyboi8666 Жыл бұрын
I imagine that because the monsters are created by Ganondorf they can fuse with it, whereas the Yiga are still Hylian and just follow him, hence why they will be affected by gloom like the lady you see in Kakariko Village. It's also why you never see the Yiga around where the monsters are, they may follow Ganondorf but the monsters don't see them as allies. They became enemies of the enemy as well as the people.

With Ganondorf's gloomy spread badly damaging the melee weapons in order to make his domination much easier, Link's weaponry is far more improvised than ever (yes,making the Fuse ability essential) The spirit soldiers awaiting for Link to collect their weapons also protected them (not intentionally... I think) from the decaying effect the gloom has, in a similar fashion for the master sword having Zelda's "spirit" and sacred power infused to the blade. Therefore, a good-alignment spirit-infused weapon can never decay (or in the master sword's unique case, being healed/reinforced over many millenias) Whereas, on the other end of the alignment, Ganondorf's weaponry destined to the Great Evil actions (and by extension the phantom's weapons as well) had been infused with lots of Evil energy, therefore draining any wielder that aren't gloom affiliated, and becoming weakened by the "safety measure" the Demon King infused into it (he never expected Link would fuse those gloom weapons to the tip of a non-gloom weapon in order to not have the gloom effect, so whoops XD). As for his bow, it basically taps into the wielder's available strength to make most of the damage (he wouldn't be worried since most hylians would be like 3-7 hearts at best AND with weak armors, leaving others to have something like 6 to 14 dmg)

Crushed by a ball Survived a massive fall Survived in the Depths for 3-5 years. Can see through Link's Yiga disguise without fail, even if he's slightly fooled for a second. And STILL, this guy hasn't looked like he's aged a day since 100 years prior to BotW, if AoC is to go by. Guy's fit as fuck, and heavily smart for being significantly over a hundred years old. Weird and very specific tips about the depths gloom patches: you can actually stand on the black outer parts of them and not take damage, its only the red parts that hurt you, but its best to just watch your step regardless, the gloom sickness can rack up quickly if you aren't careful If you have The compendium and sensor+ unlocked on the Purah Pad, register a Stalhorse and set it to be detected by the sensor, they make early game travel so much easier in if you dont have a lot of Zonai battery life and are searching for ore to get those sweet sweet crystallized charges, mostly because these funky Bone Pones are immune to Gloom and can ride those buggers right over it If you find a Mine with a Zonite processor construct, climb their forges chimney, you can find a few free crystallized charges or poes up there

I love looking at The Depths as a game dev lens. They made a whole new, unique-feeling area with a *tiny fraction* of the usual effort required. Designing an interesting map and spreading shrines and stables and towns around it in an interesting fashion is really hard and a ton of work. So they did it once, for the Surface, and then just flipped it for the Depths and tweaked what needed tweaking. And rather than feel like a "shortcut" or "lazy", the player experiences it as really clever and actually helpful! It's genius. Absolute genius. They also make the most of the Switch's low RAM and slow streaming by swapping out model sets between layers - allowing for them to feel even more different while also working around a hardware limitation.

I avoided taking on gloom lynels until one spotted me and teleported over to me. I had no idea they could do that. I knew they could teleport *away* if they got too far from their own territory, but that's definitely not what happened because I was on one of those platforms with the zonai devices. There's no way that's the lynel's normal spawn point. My husband encountered a gloom lynel early in his playthrough, and I don't think he's ever even fought a lynel besides the one on Shatterback Point in BotW. The gloom lynel didn't see him, and he stayed out of its line of sight by climbing around a pillar as it circled him. It was kinda funny.

Am so glad the marketing team kept the Depths....underground....for the whole leadup to the game. A lesser game studio would market that the map is now twice the size, but not Nintendo, they used the gameplay and sky islands as the hook, then kept the largest change hidden for us to explore. I am honestly a little sad i left exploring the depths until last, after i had explored all the sky islands (because am a sucker for sky islands in all media), and seen the changes to the over world, so its a shame i found out the gimmick and the sky bike before i started exploring it. So to redeem myself, i will, once master mode has come out, do a "challenge" run where i dont get the paraglider, no maps, no zonai capsules, no auto build and no fast travel.

I couldn't beat the bosses in Breath of the Wild. Also found them boring. In Tears of the Kingdom I loved them and enjoyed fighting them. I was sad I couldn't fight them again. Until I encountered one in the Depths. I was so happy, and have now slaughtered them all twice over.

Heeeyyy, I'm not the only one that killed Ganondorf before I ever killed a Lynel 😂 I did get wrecked by a Gleeok, though. Still haven't managed to take one of them down. Part of that is probably me being stubborn and doing it without the aid of keese-eye arrows to prove to myself that I can do it without them. One day 🤞

Yesterday I was more shocked by the depths than anything else because colgera was just chilling down there (no pun intend) I found him because I was trying to get a treasure under the Herba mountains and because I like to find janky ways to get there, I ended up finding him right under the mountains. I was really confused on what I was looking at until I figured out it was my first boss I defeated lmao. I have no idea what its tied too but I love it so much. Great video btw

I can understand where people are coming from, yes--it is pretty "same-y". However, because you are trekking through the darkness most of the time there were so many things about the design of the place I didn't even notice until I made this video, which required me to create long panning shots and footage of Link simply walking slowly through the surrounding foliage. I appreciate the atmosphere of the Depths more now because of it, so I do think it's fine as-is.

The Yiga only disguise themselves as trees for one specific ambush, you have to pick up a banana bunch left as a trap and they'll reveal themselves. The Hyrule Compendium says that Evermeans are monsters that mimic trees, and they are a species that shares many characteristics with trees so they can be chopped down in the same way.

I think gloom hands are creepier but less scary intimidating. You can just climb up on a tree and you'll be safe. Meanwhile Guardians still induce panic. You better kill those mfers before they kill you, or they WILL kill you, and there's nowhere safe to hide from guardians. The depths really needs something on the same level as guardians

Yika having taken over the underground feels a little too much. They keep whining and die in the darkness, the only thing that keeps their numbers up is an unexplainable influx in members. Which is weird considering there's only like 150 people in hyrule overall.
