Hugely underrated actor AND film. This is by far one of the most beautiful films I've seen. It's hard but it was refreshing to not only see a movie that has no cgi, or gimmicks, it was all from the heart, and about something we all crave "freedom". Sean Penn was perfect to direct this, the side characters were all effective, and Emile Hirsch no doubt gave his character justice. I honestly can't think of anyone I would have rather seen play him because he was just phenomenal. Made me forever a fan of his work. This film and story makes me feel more spiritual. I want to eventually buy "Back to the Wild", the book that features all his writings, story, and photos he took along the way. The cover and back of the book itself is worth buying. Just looks so authentic and beautiful. I feel the 90's was the last decade of true explorers. No internet, minimal technology (though useful), and no distractions unlike today's society who is addicted to entertainment, and anything technology related. Nowadays people stand in line for hours (even days) for a new iPhone...Chris would have shook his head, or chose to NOT even know about it buy shutting out society, as he said "people are so bad to eachother" He would be ashamed at the violence, and hypnosis we are under everyday. I wouldn't be surprised if he saw what today's society looks like...he would have chosen his death on that bus anyday.

Into the Wild and 127 Hours belong to a specific American lineage of films. Both have close ties to the concept of Human Adulthood that originates from the books by pseudonymous author Jed McKenna. Aron Ralston (the subject of 127 Hours) once confessed that he had read Krakauer's Into the Wild and was inspired by it. All of the above also have close links to R.W. Emerson and Thoreau.

this film made me laugh, cry, think about life. what i have learnt from this movie is that no matter how scary your dreams are, chase after them. take big risks, don't just sit around and waste life away, go out and experience life. it also made me realize i need to stop pushing people away and saying i like being alone. when he died alone at the end of the film after realizing that people do make a difference in your life and that you do need them, i couldn't stop crying. nobody should ever die alone. i wish the people who had discovered his dead body had found him sooner. it's not fair to know he never saw his sister again or fell in love or had a kid

This movie is stupidly stupidly beautiful. It was way beyond beautiful. The story, the actual story it is amazing itself. But such a good performances, such a good cast, soundtrack on point and the pictures and cinematography couldn't have been better. It just such a magnificent. How the hell did not win an oscar? And with Emile's performance too. Omg. So underrated tho, and i have no idea why.

It's so wonderful to see that this wasn't one of those situations where the actor knows nothing about who they're playing, I love how absolutely humble and respectful Emile is about McCandless and his family and that he did as much as he could to portray him accurately and respectfully . He did a fantastic job portraying him, I was so happy to see that they chose him to play Chris. I just gained so much respect for Emile, wonderful guy.

I'm very impressed that Emile Hirsch has such insight and pays so much attention to the character he had learnt and interpreted as the quintessential Chris McCandless. No glorification should be made of him, but then, without it, maybe I would have never hatched my plan to do the same thing as Chris...

i really admire Emile for being so humble and respectful in the honour for Christopher McCandless, its' so refreshing to see such a life changing film about a man who wanted freedom from this sick world that we live in today and how he had the bravery to do the things only we ever wish to do, paving the way for people to actually look at life's unneeded materialistic things and really ask the question ' Why do we need all this?'. When really all we need is happiness.

Into the wild!!! Probably #1 on my lists of favorites the book & movie, is a deeply moving story about a young man journeys and experiences. I would also suggest "Alone in the Wilderness " great documentary and book. About a man named Dick" Proenneke (May 4, 1916 - April 20, 2003) he live in the wilderness of Alaska and built his own cabin very impressive person with skills.

They say "it wasn't in the Top 10 Box Office over the weekend? MUST SUCK" (lets not forget Grown Ups was a BIG HIT...and both Grown Ups movies were unimaginably awful). People these days are so hypnotized by media, and technology, that a story like this is irrelevant to them at this point. I'm glad some of us atleast admire this story and even find it both cautionary and inspiring.

you're so right! every person i show this movie to just doesn't get it. there is such a beautiful message throughout this movie, and if you dont have the right mind frame, then that message just passes right over your head. you either get it, or you dont. and its a shame that lots of people dont get it. i absolutely hate when people try and make chris mccandless out to be some spoiled rich kid who was stupid to attempt this. this guy lived life to the fullest, lived a life true to the human spirit. hes an absolute role model!

It’s a good FILM but the idea is bullshit. He threw away all the opportunities he had and he just thought he would go into the wilderness in Alaska with no skills, no tools, no experience and survive. Of course he didn’t survive. He could have used his wealth to get training and gear and then go off and do what he wanted.

Always thought Emile Hirsch was underrated. That film broke so many boundaries inside me, how to live life & everything. It's really a shame we don't have any movie industry people wanna do those types of films more. I mean there is maybe 5/6 movies like this one compares to the 100ds & 100ds of bullshit CGI & trash movie. I don't mean that every movie made should have this type of intense realism & true life experiences & everything but the ratio from this type of film & the rest is 1 to 1 000 000, its ridiculous.

Yeah, I think he used that phrase to show that he wasnt making Chris look better than he was if that makes sense. Like how some people over exaggerate a story and make it seem too good to be true. I think Emile was saying he did the best he could and represented the interpretation of how Chris was with no added strings :)
