Start with The Road or No Country for Old Men if you’re totally new to his works.
Blood Meridian is his best novel, but not his most entertaining.
My personal favorite of his is Cities of the Plain. I reserve the right to change this answer as I get older.

Just read The Road on your recommendation and I am hooked on McCarthy! Can't wait to dive into the rest of his works.

For me, as a woman, I don’t care one bit that he doesn’t write women characters much, or at all. I just don’t care. I know this is a huge criticism but I personally don’t get it.

same here! it really doesn't bother me that he doesn't write women as leads or often... it's fine to write about what you know and not try to understand the female experience esp in the rural south/southwest

@@miriamruth0701 You have way too much common sense for this world, esp in 2023. 🤗

So far I've only read Blood Meridian, over the course of a few overnight shifts. Made for some very strange emotions. So damn good though.

So far I’ve read NCFOM, The Road and Blood Meridian. McCarthy is already in “favorite author of all time” territory for me but I still have a ways to go. I have the border trilogy and a few others on deck waiting to be read. I really appreciate what you’re doing here, man.

You are the fist person that came to my mind when hearing about Cormac's passing, hope this brings a smile to your face in this sad day. As a HUGE McCarthy fan, you have immaculate taste and very much so know what your talking about, was very surprised Suttree didn’t do it for you as much, but glad to hear your takes!

Thank you! Really appreciate this note. Suttree has been on my mind a lot lately-I may reread it later this year. I first read it five years ago so I may just not have been ready for it at the time

great video. I started with Blood meridian and was hooked page 1. McCarthy became my favorite writer before I even finished it. followed that with The Road, loved it. especially the last 10 pages. sublime. im now reading All the Pretty Horses and it's been excellent. kinda bummed I didn't discover him earlier.

Every great novel is entertaining. If it’s not - and Blood Meridian isn’t - it can’t be great.

I'd also say All the Pretty Horses is a good starting point. A bit more involved than the Road or No Country for Old Men but follows more conventional plot dynamics and storyline. All the Pretty Horses also has some devastatingly beautiful passages, same as the Blood Meridian era but much more positive.

Great video! I recently finished Blood Meridian, I was surprised how long it took me considering it’s a pretty small book. Each page requires full attention and analysis. I loved the western and historical aspect of it, would you recommend I read the Border Trilogy next?

Thanks! Yep, if you liked Blood Meridian try the trilogy or no country next

So I read blood meridian first. It was a difficult read at some times and i had to watch a wendigoon video after every chapter but god i’ve never read anything like it. I loved it. But I’ve had NCFOM for a while but i’ve been put off a bit just because i watched the movie multiple times. But I actually ordered the border trilogy recently and I even started reading the start of the passenger. The passenger intrigues me for some reason especially after finding out what Stella maris was about.

All the pretty horses ❤️ I can’t talk enough about how much I love that book! One element I enjoy is how he includes Spanish dialogue.. In fact just all of his dialogue.. el es perfecto 👌

I’m about ready to start this one! Is there a lot of Spanish? I don’t speak it and now I’m wondering if there’s a bit of a language barrier.

I would have a hard time recommending The Road and No Country. They are a step down from his earlier novels. I’ve read them all except Orchid Keeper.

I’ve read almost everything by him, as well, minus the Orchard Keeper. I started with Suttree(absolutely loved it..great place to start), The Crossing(brilliant but slow in parts--I also rarely cry while reading but this book made me bawl) and Blood Meridian. I read The Road after those three and didn’t like it at all, really. Then I read NCFOM and found it to be a super easy and fast read. If I had read The Road first, I may have not continued with his writing. I’m definitely alone in that sentiment because everyone seems to love that book.
