Best one I have ever read the kindly ones by Jonathan littel. You learn a lot from the dialogue from the perspective of the SS. Incredible book tbh, well worth it.

“We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the neverending contest in ourselves of good and evil. And it occurs to me that evil must constantly respawn, while good, while virtue, is immortal. Vice has always a new fresh young face, while virtue is venerable as nothing else in the world is.”

Goggins is the voice I hear in my head during a race or long run when I start to feel tired or feel like slowing down. Great stuff! There is so much Cormac McCarthy also that's on my to be read list, RIP.

What I don't understand about the show, is why didn't they start at the beginning. why are they starting basically at the end. You have to literally read 400 pages before you get to the part where the show starts🤦! And now they're doing a prequel prequel of agon🙄. I wish George RR Martin Would stop fucking around, and finish the original series!🤬

Make sure you also read the journal he wrote while he was working on the novel, "The Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters". About 190 pages, and really fascinating for the background it provides.

After hearing about this book for ages, I finally dove in. I am 45% in and am not terribly impressed. Writing with a thesaurus at one's side does not make them sound intelligent, nor is it automatically poetry. There are flashes of brilliance in the prose, but it is mostly pretentious and definitely does not have the same flair as Moby Dick. Also, unless there is a massive turn of events on the horizon - where is all the unrelenting, disturbing violence everyone bangs on about? There are, so far, a few isolated moments, but it is far from constant, and the book is mostly rambling and boring. I will try to finish this, only because of its reputation.

Everytime I start to read something, you make a video on it. I swear we share brains! While only a few chapters in, I can tell this is something special. If a layman were to paraphrase sections of this book, it would seem like a lackluster novel, but Steinbeck was a master in his craft.

Garden of Eden was a surprisingly good imo. Probably tied for my favorite book of his. Farewell to arms was devastatingly good. For whom the bell tolls felt entirely too long and the characters not all the way realized
