I have watched 6 other videos about overtones and I came away without any understanding. This is the first and best video to explain what overtones are and how to start developing the skills. Excellent job. Thanks Scott.

This is a different approach to the overtones that I am excited about trying. Thanks Scott for keeping me inspired to learn more!

Hey Joe! Yeah, switching from the original note to the overtone in the beginning will help get your tongue in the right spot. Once you get use to it, jumping to that note from the fundamental will be way easier. Most of the the videos/techniques I see teaching overtones go way to deep for just getting them started. It's a real process to make it happen.

HAHA! I'm the absolute worst singer. I can't match a pitch to save my life. I sing in my lessons all of the time anyway, my students have just learned to figure out what I'm meaning, but when it's documented in a video it's brutal. lol

Hey, Scott. When playing the overtones Bb, B and C, do you use the octave key? It works with or without octave key, and I have read advocates for both techniques, but would like to know what's your call on this one. Great video!

Very nice tutorial, thx! A question: does this work as well starting with the octave key? Like, I can reach notes an octave above the octave key notes? Or does the tongue work only work for the lower register notes?

I’ve always had trouble with sticking to just one topic of practice for a good week or so... I have been using these overtones as part of my warmup for a good while now (6-8 months), I’ve been incorporating that with my long tone and rhythm (metronome) exercises, almost correspondingly with each other every time...and I always try to fit that as part of my fundamental practice routine. But it’s the same with almost every other aspect of what goes into individual practice that is inconsistent with me... you have any pointers on things like balancing that with, like, everything else in a busy schedule?

hey Scott!! thank you for all the simple and great tips to play sax!!! but i am still not sure about what's the meaning of working on overtones??? to control your embouchure or to be able to play altissimo better??
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 4 жыл бұрын
Overtones help you with breath support and airstream control. The added bonuses are a way bigger sound and better altissimo because of your ability to control your airstream and breath support.

Did they work before? Usually practicing overtones improves altissimo.

raise your tongue. And approach it from the actual note. Play the note and then sneak into the overtone.

Scott, I just got the Rascher book and I don't understand how the average person can actually hit those high overtone notes he has in the book. With the low Bb fingering, I can only reach high Bb, and try as I may, high D and F are way out reach for me. Can most of the pros reach these high overtone notes?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it takes time.... a lot of time.... a lot a lot of time. haha. So it will take a good year of doing overtones before you can get to the high notes. It's pretty advanced stuff. Getting to the double octave is a great start.

I've unintentionally played overtones when I really intend to play the lower octave version of the note. I always thought this was a bad thing. I'm wondering, when in music is it "good" or preffered to play the overtone versus the correct fingering for that higher octave note?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 6 жыл бұрын
When you do it on purpose! Haha. To get those lower notes out cleaner drop your tongue down into the AHHH position. Overtones are used in soloing by tons of modern sax players.

This is so damn hard to come out! , stuck on the first one. I'm trying the Bb overtone and it's coming out as either F (2 octaves up) or Bb (2 octaves up) with low Bb fingering and I'm trying to get the Bb just 1 octave up...but i keep overshooting. I think I did it accidentally.... any tips?? Thanks in advance Scott!
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, get your tongue down. You're getting the higher overtones (which generally are more difficult) because your tongue is up to high. Approach it from a regular Bb and then switch to the overtone Bb so that you have a reference note.

This is so fucking hard i keep playing an F overtone rather than the middle B flat can someone hel
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sonya, some overtones come out easier than others on different saxes, mouthpieces, etc. If that F is coming out instead of the Bb that means that your tongue is up to high. You need to lower your tongue a little bit. A great way to practice the correct tongue position is going between the regular fingered Bb (using bis Bb) and the overtone Bb. Go back and forth between them several times to get use to the tongue position. Overtones are 100% about correct tongue position and breath support.
