Guys. Guys. Guys. He doesn't say they can't have toys; don't leave them laying around. Give the dogs plenty of time to bond.

In the beginning I too thought his methods were harsh and cold. All I wanted to do was snuggle my dog. Not until my dog developed unwanted behaviors and defiant traits did I give Leerburg's methods a chance. It was the only reason I was able to correct his issues and have a strong, still dominant, but non defiant dog. Leerburg is a saving grace in my humble opionion.

I agree about dogparks for the very reason you cite. My dog can be very nervous about new environments, car rides and new places. Anything outside of her routine. She doesn't typically do well around dogs her size or bigger, she likes smaller dogs to play with. That's why I'm really nervous about this Boxer mix coming into our home.

Great information! One tip to add, the chain link is a great barrier between dogs as long as it’s covered like a tennis court with mesh... watched my dogs tooth get hung up and he popped a tooth in half right in front of me... it was like time slowed down so much that I clearly saw the tooth get hung up and snap in half. The first word out of my mouth was F!!!

For those of you who were complaining about him saying they couldn't have toys, you need to watch the video again. He didn't say they couldn't have toys. He said they don't leave them laying around. This is dangerous to do when you are introducing dogs into a new home, especially adult dogs. I have seen this personally. You have to introduce them slowly or keep them in their crates only or you only play with them one at a time, at first...which is exactly what he said. We took a rescue GSD in along with our two, who never showed one once of aggression, even when nipped at and barked at by other dogs. The rescue dog was playing with a toy we left out. My female is used to being able to play with our male and wanted to play with him. The rescue GSD only growled at our female and my male GSD jumped ALL over him and ended up pinning him down in a corner. So, yes, he knows exactly what he's talking about.

@@Amy-dw7iiSo, Tom Davis, Upstate Canine Academy says he learned a bunch from Leerburg. ❤❤Some of you are way too knee-jerk about any word in language that triggers YOU and your idiosyncratic sensitivities. . I would rather be SAFE with my dogs using plenty of structure and house rules, than " wish" they would get along on their own, or only by being fed treats! Prevention is the best medicine in most every successful program. Prepare, prevent and practice. Perfect practice makes perfect 99% of the time. Some are just not disciplined enough to work this hard.

He's right. Got to understand his p.o.v. His experience is with protection type breeds. This type of dog really needs rules and structure from the start. Sure, you can relax the rules, depending on the dogs and situation but, he is describing a method that has the greatest certainty of being effective for safety, and ensuring a healthy adjustment into the home with the dogs already there.

I have a male and a female Rottweiler, both 7 y old and I'm about to introduce an 8 week old male puppy. I raised both dogs since they were 4 months. My boy is low energy, but dominant and protective over the female. She is high energy and very attached to me. Your video is very educational and confirms that initial separation with a crate and exercise pen is an absolute must. Thank you.

Getting my new dog tomorrow. Had my dog meet the new one at the shelter so I know they get along but I’m nervous about bringing the new one home in the morning. He was a stray they caught and brought in to the shelter. Very sweet boy from everything I’ve seen so far.

Isabella W I’m so happy it all worked out!! I finally found a dog at the shelter that I think will be a good fit to play with my current dog but I’m still a bit nervous because my current dog can be picky and take some warming up to before she’s comfortable with other dogs! Going to call Tomorrow to set up a meeting time hopefully!

Becca S my friend just went threw the same situation earlier this week! The type of dog they had in mind was a puppy because their dog can be hard to get along with (he’s a 10lb rat terrier/chihuahua mix) and they ended up coming home with a 70lb Shepard lab mix! They continually got passed up on dogs they wanted at the shelter and ended up with one that was totally different from what they had pictured. But the point of my rambling is that they got the perfect dog for them! It ended up going so so well! Absolutely a match made in heaven for a tiny monster dog with little man syndrome. They get along so well. I really hope the dog you bring home will be just as perfect of a fit for you!!! But if not there is no shame in bringing them back to the shelter so they can find their perfect forever home and you can find your perfect furry family addition.

Isabella W I think my dog would absolutely love a puppy however I don’t think I can go through the puppy phase again😅 she’s a smaller border collie mix and the dog I’m looking at is a boxer/chow mix they’re around the same age (2/3) but wow how your friend ended up with a 70 lb shepherd mix is so funny!!

Hello, I’ve watched your video and really like it. My family recently brought home a new dog. I have 2 existing dogs (boy and girl) living in the home. We walked each dog independently with the new dog on the other side of the street. There were no problems. We walked them in front of each other and side by side. No problems. No aggression at all. We brought them in the house and the boys were fine for a bit but then they started barking at each other. That turned into barking with teeth and then into a full blown fight. I was able to break them up and it was fine. Do you have any suggestions?

Good video. We are introducing a two year old pit(sweatest pup) to our five year choco lab is is good too but really excitable with mild separation anxiety. They walk well together but once in the house or back yard the older “home” choco is a bit aggressive. Working on it very slowly.

Ive had my dog Chewy for four years and he is spoiled. And he has been around Mia since they were little. She used to live at my mom's and is also spoiled. Since she has come to live with us I've noticed that chewy does not like to share and when she does something wrong it seems like he tries to discipline her. They are always fighting over toys and my attention. Any advice?

What if you don't have room in your house for two crates??? My current female Pitmix (spayed) has been with us 4 years now. She still has abuse issues. She has a crate, but we don't have room for another crate right now and we're sort of being forced into a situation to take a relative's dog which is a Boxer mix male. This all came down fast so I'm scrambling to figure out what to do and how to d it so as to be smooth transition of bonding.

Some very good advice in this video but some of it may not work for every dog or every owner. He has the room, the means and the time.Your dedication and commitment to training your dog/s is something to think seriously about before you decide to have dog/s, Also, sometimes re-homing is the only safe, humane option when 2 dogs cannot get along. There are dogs that are lovely with people but just should be in a home where they are the only pet.

I have 2 male boxers and just yesterday I adopted a female boxer. She gets along fine with one of the male dogs, but she keeps getting aggressive with the other one. They all live outside in the yard (they're not allowed in the house), but right now I'm having to keep either one of them in a cage at all times in order to avoid fights. Should I just keep doing that?

When I first got my dog, she pulled and tugged on her traditional collar and leash and would not submit. virtually uncontrollable. I got her a slip leash and that all changed. Looking at the dominant dog collars the same principle applies I think? She's been with us for four years now and I don't use any other type of leash.

Just saw your comment about dogs on furniture (assuming this goes for beds too). My dog is very needy for contact with her humans so she does snuggle on the couch or in the chair with my husband and she sleeps with him mostly. If we end up getting this other dog, he is used to sleeping on his dog bed. I really like Gracie snuggling up with me but if this works out, it would be nice to see them snuggle together instead. just for her sake of companionship. What you say about LOVE and RESPECT. Gracie respected me up until about 2 years ago. I have become less ambulatory and I think she takes advantage of that. My illness causes fatigue so I have not worked with her on a constant basis. Not sure how to address that.

Great video! Thank you. I wish I'd have watched this a month ago. I have 2 female boxers who have always gotten along with other dogs. I got a new 1 yr old German Shepherd female and just turned them loose together. They attacked her viciously, leaving several deep wounds. I have kept them all 3 together with us for a month. The alpha boxer attacks her any time that we are not with them. Now, I just keep the alpha boxer & the GSD separated if we are not with them. The GSD is very sweet and is submissive. I know now that I messed up initially. Any advice would be appreciated.

Crates are for every dog. You must teach structure to all your dogs. Can't let any dog feel more attention than another. Boxers will now need more firm corrections to extinguish their group mentality to beat up the shepherd. Having 2 females can be a challenge, but three? Females most prone to fighting with each other, probability goes up ! 😢

I have NEVER had a dog attack at a dog park ever! My dog started training at 12 weeks, with and without a e-collar.,the level of effort and approach are different with people and the breed. I raised three kids, our dogs not too different! Lol “go to your room” or “go to your house”. I can take an 74 lb Dalmatian anywhere. But, if someone should raise their voice to me in anger, or come at me an aggressive way. I can make him “down/leave it” or let him protect me. And he has.

What has worked for me with the little dogs together is walking them outside of the yard but making sure to to keep the dominant dog in a heel and the others as far out as lease will allow or even use a longer leash for them.... Then we walk letting out a little bit of slack on the dominant dogs leash when he or she calms down and walks normally... But never actually allowing them to interact..... It takes multiple days or weeks to get them comfortable enough with each other to be going out together even with this matter

I do visit the dog park because I don't have a back yard but I don't let my dog interact with others. He and I just play fetch and walk the trails together. He knows to avoid groups of dogs playing together. If too many dogs are interested in him and try to go our way, we turn to a different direction and I let the owner know we are not interested in playing. My dog loves with play with dogs but I will only let him play if the situation is ok. I also don't like it when people talk all the time and don't control their dogs in bad situations. And also they don't see signs of bad behavior in their dogs at the park.

I use baby gates and it worked as a substitute pretty well. There are lots of foldable dog pens that might work for you as well. Just make sure the area you have partitioned off is very secure so that the other dogs can't get at each other. My rescue dog tripped out in a crate so I had to get creative making a safe space for her.

Get a skilled pro to explain how to bring a new dog into the home. I have done it, but I'm not a regular unskilled dog handler. I know what to do and why. You go to a mechanic for a car noise or a dentist for a tooth problem.... get help from a person who does this dog handling for a living. It's not a task for an amateur and dogs are not objects. Your dogs needs you to be responsible for protecting all the dogs at the home. Accept that you are not a skilled dog handler and go from there. Bluffing is a dangerous game to play with dogs at stake (and the safety of them and people) .

Dont agree with this degree of strictness for family pets. How does it not result in poorly socialized/fearful dogs? With everything the dog is taught to suppress, where's the play? I see reactive/out of the handler's control police dogs all the time. But I do agree about on leash restrictions/crates for new dogs in the house. Definitely shouldnt do what this irresponsible person did when introducing a new dog to an existing family pet: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdyKi9yovNiXpHk.html

I have to seriously disagree with much of this video...dogs should have toys, dogs can be socialized...where does this guy get the idea that once a dog is "set in his ways" he/she "always will"? It comes down who is the established pack leader and if you are able to manage and work with your dogs! People are the ones that need training on proper leadership in a pack...we have raised German Shepherd dogs all our lives and their is a process...

Ugh. No prong collars, choke collars or any form of shock collar. Positive reinforcement works 100x better than fear-based training. I appreciate this video is old, this man is old and his methods are old but add disclaimers to old videos and ensure people are re-directed to better information. Idiots will follow this and these tools just make socialisation situations something to fear even more. Positive reinforcement has brought my horrifically abused, isolated deadly girl from trying to kill any other dog in her path to off lead in the dog park safely in a month. Please go to Victoria Stilwell and learn the positive methods of training. Honestly I may add another lady to the house in under 6 months because of the progress.

Prong collars, e-collars, and choke chains doesn't cause fear. Strictly positive reinforcement training doesn't work on the majority of dogs. In fact, it reinforces bad behaviors and cause a horrible relationship for the owner dog. Prehaps you should do your research before making yourself look like an idiot. Just an fyi, do you really support a trainer who put a dog down because her positive only methods didn't work? 😳
