I've found that most Pyrenees dogs are very patient, but man when their patience is up, it's over. Very helpful video on how to introduce puppies and back your dog up on personal space and manners.

I liked it when the bear seemed to be ok with the puppy being loved by their owner.

Okay Joel!!! I do NOT come back to videos and write comments. But this video of yours combined with other videos in which you teach how to correct dogs.... changed my life!!! I have a German Shepherd and 2 Shih Tzu dogs. The Gsd is not aggressive but always tended to chase the Shih Tzus. Which is why he wasn't allowed inside the house. But today I tried everything you teach in this video and all my dogs are sleeping right beside me like babies. I cannot thank you enough. God bless you Joel!!! Lots of love from India ❤️

Great Pyrs are amazing dogs, thank you for working to establish respect with this puppy so he doesn't annoy his older siblings. Far too often I've seen message boards where someone does this introduction wrong and things go badly in the household, not just with Pyrs but any breed. Wyatt is such a perfect example of the breed. You can see how he walks close to her and keeps an eye on her and the surroundings with this gentle, quiet energy. He comes forward to stay close when she pets the puppy and is likely cautious due to the wild energy of the young dog, but he isn't upset or overly alarmed, just watchful, and respects her signals to back up. They are the epitome of the gentle, wise protectors. I see that in my own girl all the time with my husbands elderly mother who lives with us. When she came back from surgery, and in the days before when she was sick, Moon constantly stayed by her side, watched and guarded her, not in an aggressive, clingy way but in a gentle, steadfast one, and it brings her so much comfort.

I had my pup, 4.5month old hound, at the local state park last weekend. As I was about to put him in the car a couple came up behind me with a 6 month old Aussie and a 2 month old lab. My pup was excited and touched noses with the Aussie, who seemed ok , then my pup wanted more physical play and the Aussie started retreating behind it's owner. So pulled my pup back to a less intimidating spot. The other owners said the Aussie had never been willing to even touch noses before, they were pleased she would even go that far, but agreed it was time to separate them when mine got too intense

Nice watching a pro like Joe do this on hard mode with a WET PUPPY, that isn't conditioned to a collar grab/relax, and with nothing else going on to redirect. I've run this same exercise with my 7 month old puppy and a senior dog staying the night: the mark, hold, release method Joes teaches 100% works! Thank you!

Video idea: How kids can best interact with new puppies. What are good games they can play? How to tell if the puppy is getting over stimulated? What can kids do if the puppy is getting too jumpy or nippy until a parent can handle it? Maybe also show easy ways for kids to join in on training.

Hi Joel! I am so happy to see this video because I have a great Pyrenees and I always keep an eye out for them popping up on your channel! I love all your videos and use so many of your techniques to try to help train Cooper better. He is a rescue and no one is really sure if his past, he loves me and my closest friends but is extremely protective of the house whenever anyone comes over with the exception of about three people. He growls, lunges, almost appears like he will bite at certain people. Out and about he usually does great with other people and dogs outside of the house until about two hours, then he will start to get protective of whatever new space he is in and begin to growl at all people he does not know even people he had met an hour previously and really enjoyed. He has never had a problem with another dog ever until yesterday, he met an intact male big dog and would not stop growling at him. Since that meeting coming home he is now growling nonstop at the cat who he previously loved. It is my dream to get him to you for a board and train we are about 10 hours away and I am saving for it! If you have any inside the home/people visiting the home aggression tips please let me know! I’ve seen a few of your great videos regarding it already 🐶👍

I think we can all agree that this is the definition of a gentle giant and he means no harm to anyone or anything he only wants to make sure that his family is safe and as long as nobody puts his family in Jeopardy he's not out to cause problems. I think you'll be surprised at how fast that he becomes just as protective over the pup in time and the only foreseeable problem that could arise is with him and ranger when that happens if ranger isn't respectful with the pup. but he has that gentle soul and that tends to be how they roll besides, this breed is very much a leader in their personality when bread and raised right and he will teach the puppy how to be an equally great dog.

A friend has a 4 month Pyrenees pup who is pretty dominant. Mounts other dogs, and pushes the authority of older dogs. Even started marking

I think it might be important to mention that our dogs can understand different languages. So if a dog is not listening to your commands it may be the handlers language of choice. I think that's just as important to know in I.P.G. as well as AKC

Fantastic video! I did many of these things while raising my great pyrs to be livestock dogs. This is similar to how I would intro new (flighty/anxious) livestock or a new puppy-in-training to our working dog. My current dog lets goats and chickens climb all over him and doesn’t care but, oh boy, when we’ve had strangers/strange dogs come up to our fence line- he lets them know to back off.

Little things like her paying attention, and crossing her arms must not be over looked. Good job 👍

Love your technics, I have trained gun dogs and husky’s but as I am older and problem knees, I bought a maltipoo. Please help by posting some tiny dog training. I can’t get down to heel, and if I pop even a little on the lead his 2.9 kg body all comes back. And he grabs lead in his mouth on walking and again, it’s so far down. He’s a bundle of high energy that even when I try to hold collar to calm him he becomes the alligator. Lol. Small tiny dog help videos please.

We have a 7 yr old pyrenees and a very young berner puppy. They are both exactly like the dogs in this video lol. My puppy is hyper, bitey, full of energy. My pyr is calm and aloof. Pyrs really are fantastic dogs. I would trust mine with my life and I'm confident she can handle herself with any type of dog. Even with very aggressive dogs...she's only ever been defensive of herself and her people. Never on the attack.

My male pyrenees max who since passed away would resource guard his whole acre of fenced in area. He would not let any animal or dog inside the fence especially male. We recently got a stray Caucasian shepard female who roams our 50 acres freely not leash or collar and can jump any fence. When she got in the backyard max would show his alpha side bark and growl snap but never bite until the female would bow to him and be submissive. Once she did that he accepted her to come in the backyard anytime and we now had 4 puppies and kept 1 and still have his sister pyrenees ruby who has helped train my malinois red nose mix.

Most livestock guardian breeds like Pyrenees are some of the best when it comes to disciplining puppies. They tend to be very patient until the puppy is disrespectful and then they have no problem putting the puppy in its place. I raise Colorado Mountain Dogs and I'm working on breeding toward dogs that get along better as a pack. But even with my dominant dogs I have never had a problem introducing a puppy. Even when it looks or sounds ugly they always have the restraint to not go overboard when it's a puppy. At least if they're raised with livestock I think that's partially where they learn it. Some livestock guardians will put their charges in their place if they do things like steal their food or bully them, but they've been bred for thousands of years to not injure their sheep/goats. While it does happen sometimes overall they have a very good understanding of what it takes to put any animal in its place and when to stop. The exception is when dogs of the same sex who are adults are trying to figure out the hierarchy. Sometimes they're never going to figure it out without fighting to the point of serious injury. That's why personally I'm selecting for dogs that get along well with dogs at the same sex.

I bet the owner didn’t count on a switch at the hospital…she ended up with the polar bear and another family went home with the Great Pyrenees.

This is so crazy that you posted this today. I just did a session yesterday with a Great Pyrenees and introducing to a Berniedoodle puppy. Kept puppy on leash. The Pyr was the same attitude, was so over it, not into it at all, but was totally neutral and ignored since I had it handled. Apparently he can be reactive but I have not yet seen it when I am with them and the family. I suggested you and some videos, and was surfing through to find some on a Pyr or another flock guarding breed because I find them so patient yet hard to read. Can you do another session with this dog around a variety of other dogs? I am doing a session next with them around 8 of my clients dogs, like you do. But they have never had him with dogs before apart from one or two family dogs he either ignored or disliked, liked one golden retreiver 10month puppy. So bringing a golden retreiver as a helper, but I'd like to see you do a session with a variety and how you may handle his responses to various dogs. We have him on a gentle leader using your techniques. Met my Rottie helper dog, was absolutely fine, but need to get him with more dogs, and curious how you handle a breed and type of dog that doesnt really seem to want "doggie friends". He is 2, and lived on a livestock farm the first 18 months of his life, now living in suburbia, and seems dopey and under stimulated, but I hear they're like that during the day because they are meant to be guarding at night. Please please more of this dog and breed!! It is YOUR training methods I need for this particular client. Just saw there is a part 2!!! I can't wait!! Please make it as detailed as possible!!

Joel, can you please do a video on raising a guard dog (such as Rottweiler, Cane Corso and Doberman) with a family. Lots of videos teach you on how to raise a dog and how to be leader, but it's rare to see good content on KZfaq that teaches you how to raise a guard dog with kids. It gets tricky here, because positive reinforcement trainers could say the exact opposite of what your supposed to do so we need videos from people we trust, like you. There are people who say that correcting your dog from trying to attack other dog is cruel, how are we supposed to trust what those people have to say about anything else if they don't know the simplest things? So It would be nice to see your input on how to raise a guard dog with family, and i'm sure it will help lots of people.

Do you think that these recommendations are mainly for big dogs? For example, the petite and small size Kongs are still too large to chew for my 11 lb dog (his tongue got a good workout, but not his teeth). They still are hanging around completely untouched. (Note, filled Kongs are hugely popular among the big dogs at the shelter that I volunteer at.) Beef marrow bones: the meat counter agreed to cut the bones cross-wise to a 3/4" height. However, I boiled them because of hygiene. What are your thoughts re cooked marrow bones vs little dogs' teeth? Himalayan cheese sticks: my dog adored these when he was 1 yr old, but now has no interest in them whatsoever. Thoughts? Antlers: aren't they too hard for small dogs? What about dehydrated green tripe? They're kind of leathery. Thanks for the tip on this brand of dehydrated fish skin. I dehydrate pieces of cooked (no salt or seasonings) salmon and mackerel skin in the toaster oven until they're crunchy; they last about a second.

Joel: if older dog is not into toys and puppy is would it be ok to have toys out during the meeting to help get the puppy off of the big dog? Something that makes the puppy’s attention not focused on the big dog? Great video yet again!

When Wyatt was wanting pets....... I know she was following directions but it would be hard to not pet sweet Wyatt. That explains when me and my husband hug my dog will sometimes rush to be in the middle 🤣.

I have the exact opposite of this and it’s tough….extra large puppy with one small and one extra small adults. It’s been a couple months, still going very slow. Using management most of the time. I don’t want to screw this up. Thankfully puppy goes home every night and weekends little dogs have more freedom. Joel, I’m concerned of correcting my puppy too much and creating different problems while being concerned I’m taking too long getting them together. The biggest is I don’t let them in the back yard together where I can’t intervene swiftly if need be. Standard poodle pup 7mos old. Am I on the right path taking time, management/precautions?

Looks like im doing it right. Except my puppy wasn’t really inappropriate until he was about a year old. At 2 he doesn’t harass her as often. (Both are Great Pyrenees) :)

My sisters puppy is wild. It’s 16 weeks old and is jumping on my dogs back (11yr old), biting her neck and face constantly. My dog uses her foot & throat to pin him down but the puppy just doesn’t let up or seem to learn so we’ve attached a lead to break it up which seems to help calm him. It worries me that the puppy would do this to a not so placid dog and get really hurt. At first my dog seemed to love the play but it’s now distressing her as he gets too much & she comes to me when he starts. Do we keep the lead on the pup?

I’d love to see this finger in lip technique whenever the puppy goes nuts when you grab t-heir collar. My GSD does it sometimes when I try to hold him still when stimulated. He will sometimes get away and I sort this by having a lead and stepping on it, but I’d still like to nip it in the bud rather than him getting away

What do you do to keep your old dog from bullying while they are alone?

This puppy is actually great compared to my BC mix she is absolutely crazy, jumps into the other dogs face then runs away and again and again it is really annoying to all the dogs but she is so fast I can't even catch her to correct her I let her be corrected by dogs or I leave the long line on and if she gets too crazy I pull her to stay close to me and away from the dog and tell her to slow down she knows it means she needs to sit and chill but as soon as I let her she goes again. Am I doing this right or completely wrong?

I think you should let the teaching to the big dog .. he handled it perfectly no agression just setting boundaries.

How would you deal with a 9 month old puppy who doesn’t stop fighting the leash as soon as she realizes the walk is coming an end? Nothing I do stops her the only thing that seems to work is taking her to new places so she doesn’t clue in?

Any tips on how to deal with a fear periods with a 7 month old Border Collie. He acted out at the dogpark (attacking another dog) and I am scared he will only get worse. I really want to know how to deal with it now. He also barks and growls at any dog he sees on leash. I really think it has to do with his hormones, but I don't know for sure. I just don't know how to give him proper excersice if he keeps acting out on leash and at the dogpark.

Wyatt seems like a gentle giant but I don't think people should own pets they can't physically maintain control over should the need arise.

What if you know that the puppy is going to turn into the dominant dog? Purchased a hot bandog from ASC kennels, shes about 3 months old and I have a bully about 3 years old. My bully is about 48lbs and my bandog should be in the 80-90lb range, both are females. I will be picking up the pup the weekend of 12/2🔮
