Today, Sony announced the World's first interchangeable lens HD consumer camcorder. The beautiful scenes of Bali were shot using the new NEX-VG10 and shows how interchangeable lenses can help capture beautiful vistas with a shallow depth of field, crisp images of a subject while the background artistically out of focus and rack focus on subjects switching from foreground to background.
Sony's NEX-VG10 provides the options previously reserved for professional videographers to consumers. It is equipped with the same ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor used in Sony's "NEX-5" and "NEX-3" digital cameras which is approximately 19.5 times bigger than what you would find in conventional camcorders. It has a powerful BIONZTM processor allowing photographers the ability to capture full 1920x1080/60i high definition video at up to 24Mbps for true cinematic Blu-ray quality.

I have two of these... work horses I have used them for 8 years... moving toward the A6500 but I love the NEX VG10's and the e--mount lenses.

Wow! You can get 3 of these cameras for the price of 1 of the Panasonics in question. The audio does sound decent and since it records to flash card there should be virtually ZERO machine noise.

@JWD96 Thanks! I later realized those are just decorative features on top of the mic (not actual buttons). I'd heard that about the 30fps Progressive in a "60i" wrapper. That's the first time I've run across that. I understand Sony is trying to make sure their format is compatible for burning to Blu Ray. As for the CMOS sensor I believe you can improve the sensors to avoid rolling shutter. The REDs have CMOS if I'm not mistaken, just more consumer level cams. Thanks again!

@sh3t0r is right. although you can play 24p on 30p... the diference lays on how the movement and light is recorded by the camera.

Zebra: may be in the next firmware version 2. no, zoom buttons are not possible with interchangeable Lenses (only with pro broadcast lenses) 3. you can't change this with a CMOS sensor 4. it's for consumers! They don't need XLR. If you need it, then a Beachtek adapter will work pretty good 5. i'ts psF footage, so it is progressive but in an interlaced container. most NLE's will detect it as progressive footage, and you don't have to deinterlace this footage.

@Malfunction A55 is primarily a still camera. It will become overheated after 9 minutes recording if steady shot is on.

Fascinating.... I've been puzzled by the gaping chasm between "consumer" video and "pro".The consumer ones are affordable but limitting, the pro ones are obscenely expensive. This model addresses some of the limitations of my Canon Vixia, without spending $5k... or maybe, by the time I get a few lenses, with spending $5k. I'm not rushing out to buy one, but maybe after the early adopters do the beta testing for me...

I've started using DSLR's - notably Lumix GH1 (hacked). I wasn't keen on this to begin with because I'm used to using a video camera. After a while, using the DSLR becomes second nature and on the plus side you always have a stills camera at hand! It will be interesting to see how manufacturers respond to the recent upsurge in DSLR video film making. I like the look of the VG10 though - nice!

Concerns as a low-budget film solution (as opposed to Canon 7D) - please feel free to chime in, I'm just sharing thoughts and fishing for more info. ;) 1. Zebra Strips to check exposure (wouldn't expect at this price) 2. Placement of zoom buttons right above mic (those are the zoom buttons right?) 3. Rolling Shutter effect 4. No XLR inputs (but wouldn't expect at this price) 5. Interlaced footage (I see some people say this is not so but the specs read that way so I'm not sure on this)

@8x50scope if you want to do photos and video go for the canon if your main priority is video go with the sony as you will get better manual control in video and as a semi-pro camcorder it will give you great results

Sounds like revenge of the camcorder to hold off the Video SLR revolution started by the Canon 5D Mark II. I'm in the SLR camp with my Canon 550D (T2i), but I have to admit that built in microphone looks pretty impressive.

@bfg2600 look into the sony a55, i was in the same route as you as getting the t2i, but then someone pointed out the amazingness of the a55. 15point auto focus during video, 16mp, and 10 FPS. Its amazing and has nearly the same quality video if not exact. Plus future firmware upgrades to the a55 will give manual video controls.

I think this camera would film sick rollerblade footage, it sucks I can't afford it. I would love to test it out and give a review of it. after watching this video. I've filmed with the Canon 7D and I have to say I like it a lot.

The gh2 4/3rds sensor on the Panasonic blew this camcorder in lowlight and options ;)

Macs actually work fine with AVCHD, Final Cut Pro 7 for example imports AVCHD footage without a problem. I've been using Final Cut Pro 7 and AE and I've had no problems. AVCHD is converted to quicktime for a reason, the frame information is incomplete with formats such as h.264. Most programs now are only quicktime based because this format provides complete frame information.

@Wishmaster300 1. You have a choice of which nle you use 2/3. better compression, better frame rate support, fewer moving parts, better quality, 4:2:2 color depth, no need to spend money on tapes, higher resolution support. Yes, enough of a difference to matter.

I just read through most of the comments. SONY left out 24p because consumers don't care, they want to sell the feature in a pro version, and 24p will soon fade away as an artifact of the 20th Century. The biggest omission: 3D! At least they're ahead of Canon in the use of big sensors in video cams.

@CasualLuxuries Just that you have to "dumb down" or reduce resolution on web videos typically so this would be more than ample. Of course I should revise that in this day and age of 1080p KZfaq videos and Vimeo content. I just meant for basic KZfaq videos, webcasting and lower demand applications this would be far better than your average consumer camera.

Someone makes an EF lens adapter that will let you. You'll lose autofocus, but from what I've read, you still have your other controls and all the lens meta data.

iMovie 09 or more and Final Cut Pro work just fine if you are using the memory stick pro duo, i dont know about the SD card. But remember that once the transfer of the file is done, it's gonna be much bigger, around 15 mb per second!

I dont know if i should get this. it looks amazing. but im still rather amateur. 1. the program that comes with it doesnt work with mac ( fail ) 2. im afraid this camera is too much for me to comprehend. ( i have a hdr xr500v ) 3. how do you get the film on to the computer to edit it? SOMEONE HELP MEEE~

@PWCFISHINGUSA It had not been reveal yet, you have to wait til November 3rd. I think it will be two different models, one for EF camcorder and other for PL camcorder, I think it will cost over $6k or $10k. I don't know the whole spec yet I will update when I get more information.

@EthaanChristian Final Cut Pro (mac) can transcode AVCHD just fine. I just did that with a short I shot on the Panasonic HVX 200. I'm not sure about iMovie. If not there are several cheap programs you can transcode to a more mac editing friendly codec. It's actually a very consumer friendly fellow. I'd think it very easy to use from what I've seen. I believe MPEG Streamclip (free download) can handle the job as well.

@TheHolyThief Stay tuned for more reviews I'd say. I'm watching it too. I wish it shot progressive and not interlaced but that's not the end of the world. Certainly this will be easier to shoot with in terms of ergonomics. Certainly the mic on this blows away any DSLR. The sensor size is bigger than the 7D in terms of MM, though the megapixels is less. I'd also be curious if you get the shutter roll problem with this as you do with most DSLRs.

@casablancamicasa I've never been a fan of the auto zoom rocker... looks perfect to me. I have a sony nxcam, and I think I have used the zoom rocker twice!

I'm a bit more enamored with those 4 mics than the overall visual performance of the cam (I'd rather have pristine sound instead of a great video handicapped by shitty sound) but of course this demo does a great job of making it look and sound great.

@KidBajan well, basically p is better than i, but the NEX VG10, the NEX-5/3 are shooting progressive video, but in an interlaced container. So it's not a real interlaced video.

I'll stick to my T2i. Very excellent camera though!! If I was into filming like I used to be, I would buy, but my T2i is a lot more fun for a lot less money. I can't wait to see how this cam progresses..

@dustindmarks The VG20 provide 1080p at 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps. you can find the spec at sony website.. it is a big improvement to VG10 which only does 1080i. For now, I am not sure if I will purchase VG20 because Canon got new camcorder coming this Nov. or next year, it will be answer to VG20 maybe.

@GTRMclaren722 OK thanks. That's better then as it avoids interlacing artifacts, though 24 Mbps might be a problem. I wonder how they solve the 4 GB limit problem of flash cards though. I wouldn't mind if they seamlessly split the file without a gap because I can always merge the video footage later.

ok so i got one but im running a mac and the software runs for PC only so how do can i import the video off my SD card while keeping the clarity. what program do you use to get the footage off or would i only need to get a PC as well?? NEED SOME INFO or a program i can get to import the footage.

@casablancamicasa I do event recording and use the zoom ring all the time, and I find it to be far more accurate. But if you don't like it, there are plenty of 7-10k cameras that do what you want. Would be monumentally difficult to implement in a lens system like that, and you certainly wouldn't be paying 2grand US for it. No digital SLR lenses that are out currently would be able to use that function... you would need all custom lenses, which would defeat the purpose of the camera.

@BrideAndGroomFilmsHD your sensor will work allot on capturing each frame..........its like video at 60fps for a minute = 3600 still shots @ 1920x1080 resolution...........this will gradually decrease the performance of your sensor after some time.

@jumanous all camcorder with auto zoom rocker including the professional camcorder for a reason,even the pro will use auto zoom,it is important for event shooting when you need a smooth zoom immediately.it might be acceptable for you but not for us.

@airdog77 Using a DSLR for video recording ........... may decrease your sensor accuracy after sometime ............ as in video mode sensor is exposed to light for longer time..........................correct me if I am wrong.

I played with this camera in the Sony store yesterday. It cost ~$1900 USD. Yes it is unbalanced, but it has an actual removable glass lens. It uses Sony Alpha lens but also other types too. For some of you this may be a crap camera. To the rest of us moving up in the video world, this is beautiful witchcraft. Send me a links of comparable cameras at the same price point and I might reconsider. Until then, I want this camera.

Streaming problems - figured it out! For some reason Chrome just doesn't like KZfaq :( I paused so many times last night it was ridiculous. Today I try the video again in 1080p in IE and it worked fine. This is an interesting system - but I'm curious why Sony didn't use IBIS like their cameras have, and instead rely on lens OSS? I also notice shake, even in the 18-200 OSS shots. I also would like to see faster action - I have a feeling shutter roll is a problem.

It seems like Sony has recently started creating more categorizes in the film and photo department of consumer electronics which is great! They seem to be the first ones to release a digital camera with a full size sensor in it like the rx100 and then rx1. What class would this camcorder be classified as? Camcorder SLR?

just a few complaints about the firmware. The user interface is unfriendly and opaque, there are no zebras, no focus assist, and no overexposure warning. Also there is no XLR jack.
