Hopefully we will get an "Ultra" to compliment this new "Pro Max". Init7 (Swiss ISP) offers 25Gbps WAN (through tapping into P2P FTTH) which would be cool to use directly with Unifi. Sad that they abandoned their "USW-Leaf" a few years ago that offered up to 100Gbps switching. Hope to see some more "datacenter"-class 25+Gbps products that also just so happen to be usable for needlessly fast ISP-provided internet connections.

The keystone of the Pro Max branding, is Etherlighting- I mean I'd rather have 4x10G ports (for small star topology), or all 2.5GbE, or PoE, but it sure seems like a big branding miss to omit Etherlighting from a UI Pro Max product.

The price point does not make sense without at least PoE & 2.5gb ports. I would 100% replace the less than 3month old UDM SE at one of my sites if it included that. The 2.5 gb and PoE would allow me to deploy the U7 access points without a replacement switch and the additional 3 2K cameras the higher processer allows + option to raid the storage would be perfect for this location. You can designate one of the fiber cages as a WAN port. You would just need to get a SFP+ module for it and you should be good.
@mr.campbellhouse
@mr.campbellhouse 2 ай бұрын

@chaosfenix
@chaosfenix 2 ай бұрын
@@mr.campbellhouse Ah I missed that. You are correct then. Honestly I don't like the device at all. How do they justify charging $230 more than the UDM Pro for simply adding a single SATA drive bay? If this thing really is intended for larger deployments it doesn't make sense. Anyone that is installing hundreds of unifi devices and thousands of endpoints is not going to stick their security system on their firewall. They are going to get a separate NVR which Ubiquiti already sells. They also aren't going to use gigabit ports or even 10GBE ports for their trunk ports. They are seriously trying to portray this as an enterprise level device all while limiting most of the ports to gigabit? They do realize that gigabit Ethernet came out in 1999 right? If they actually wanted to have this be more for enterprise they should have dropped the drive cages and the 8GBE ports. Instead they should have had a 10GbE RJ45 port, a console port, and around 6 QSFP28 ports so they could actually connect to the trunk of their network. As is this thing will bottleneck it. If they wanted to add even more ports, especially since they got rid of the drive cages, that would be fine. I don't think anyone would complain about more ports or faster ports if they didn't balloon the price doing so. If they actually want an all in one device the drive cages are great but those 8 RJ45 ports should all have POE with probably 4 having POE++ and the other 4 having POE+. They also should be at least 2.5Gbps. The RJ45 WAN port should be 10GbE capable and the 2 fiber cages should be QSFP28. If they wanted to add more ports to this that would be fine. I would be fine with more SFP+ cages or more 2.5GBE ports or another RJ45 WAN port for a backup WAN connection but I just layed out where they should have gone with it keeping the port count and type the same.
@mr.campbellhouse
@mr.campbellhouse 2 ай бұрын
@@chaosfenix What you are describing is going to cost a lot more than $599. Ultimately, this is for small/medium businesses who want more WAN throughput. As I mentioned in another comment, layer 3 switching mostly negates the benefit of this device having SFP28. Ultimately, anyone benefiting from the features you requested is going to be connecting to their switches not this device, making the addition of better on board switch moot.
@chaosfenix
@chaosfenix 2 ай бұрын
@@mr.campbellhouse Yes but those same people won't care about the additional drive bays either. This device is intended to be a all-in-one for SMB but it is seriously lacking on the networking side as they haven't bothered to upgrade it from the original UDM Pro that came out 3-4 years ago. Would it cost more? yes, but I don't think it would cost as much as you think it will either. I mean they have 8 10Gbps SFP+ ports on their aggregation switch and that only costs $270. If this device is meant to be an AIO for SMB then obviously they are going to have other layer 3 switches in their network but those are going to be connected with something faster than the 1Gbps RJ45 ports this thing has. They will need at least those 10Gbps SFP+ ports. This device is frustrating because instead of trying to be a jack of all trades it is doing everything poorly. They can use RJ45 ports. That is fine. But if they are using copper ports in a modern device they should be at least 2.5Gbps capable and they should at least consider making them POE Capable. If they don't want to do that because this is an enterprise switch meant to connnect thousands of devices then that is fine too. They should just be using more fiber ports instead then. I would like QSFP28 ports but hey if those are too expensive for the price range they want then SFP+ would be okay too. For some comparisons. Mikrotik was able to put 2.5GbE on their very similarly performing Mikrotik CRS310-8G+2S+IN for only $200. UDMs have more creature comforts and I do appreciate that but it isn't like it would break the bank to make them 2.5Gbps capable. Another Mikrotik switch, the CRS504-4XQ-IN, was also able to put 4 QSFP ports on it that actually run at 100Gbps each or can be bifurcated to support up to 16 25Gbps connections. It costs $655. Yes the UDM does a lot more than a basic switch and demands a premium for that but those 8 RJ45 ports on it aren't anything special and are just basic layer 3 ports.

@@UbiquitiInc Who would consolidate their NVR storage into a single device in such a deployment? It would make much more sense to break that out like you have already done with the NVR. You also already use SFP28 ports for aggregation on your high capacity aggregation switch. I get that you may have had a different use case in mind but your use case doesn't make sense in the real world. Anyone who legitimately has hundreds of unifi devices and thousands of endpoints would be doing all of these connections with fiber in which case every single one of the ports on here should have been fiber. They also wouldn't use a firewall as their camera storage. If they are planning to get dedicated switches for all of the devices I can guarantee you they will be getting dedicated NVRs. edit to fix grammar.

@@Gren4te yes the extra routing capacity is nice but their decisions elsewhere kinda don't make sense. They are bottlenecking that performance by putting so many slow GBE ports on it. If their use case is really the hundreds of unifi devices and thousands of clients then they should have dropped the HDD cages. Nobody operating at that scale is going to put their camera storage on the same device. They are going to use a NVR. After that they should have changed the ports. Again nobody operating at that scale uses copper for their trunk, unless it was installed 10 years ago and they haven't bothered upgrading.
