That DC paper looks exactly like the Canson Fanboy boards, with W&N Series 7 the bristles are very drying because they changed hair quality and their brushes were never the same again, I still have an old W&N S7 #3 and the flow is much better. People always say it's the artist and not the tools that matter but I found that I only started to make a ton of progress once I got the tools that enable me to make the lines that I want. If it's the same as the DC boards the back should be much smoother but still matte so the lines will brake if the ink is too dense.

all 100% true. thank you for your comment!! The tools DO in fact matter and this video is proof of that. So it's always good to step back and try to assess what is going on and if it can maybe be addressed.

all my W & N brushes are older brushes (like old new stock if that makes sense) so I have the "good" ones...not what they are doing now. I bought I think 4 dozen at the end of the good run/
@aquadias
@aquadias 6 жыл бұрын
I bought a few in 2015-16 to see how they were now and the quality was still too grainy, it's like using a brush meant for oils but with watercolors, exactly like your demo here so it's good to show the problems comic artists may face and how to solve them. I have no idea how there are artists like Tradd Moore that used them and make very long and smooth lines with them, maybe it's the combination of ink and paper they use that makes it overcome the friction of the brush bristles on the paper texture. I found the French brushes to not have this drying quality so I use them instead but the control and sharpness of (a good) W&N brush is unique.

Dude! Another great video! Yeah, DC paper is a grab bag of quality. A few (actually many) years ago, DC's "smooth" was that ultra plate bristol and really great to work on. I found that Strathmore made DC paper and bought a huge stock of the Strathmore Plate 500(?) Series that was the same quality. I've been back and forth with Strathmore for years trying to get that same stock again when I ran out but they said they've changed vendor and they can't make that sweet smooth plate anymore. Strathmore only has the toothy smooth stuff now. I'm so sad. That's part of the reason I've kind of switched over to digital even though I've been so resistant to the technology for so long. Keep it up, bro - you're my favorite inker!

Great vid, answered a bunch of questions I had about inking. (I’m working on a comic book project completely solo, and inking is definitely my downfall so this comes in real handy!) Any chance you’ll be doing a tutorial on working up textures in ink? Would be awesome to get some insight into when to use hatching, cross hatching, etc when dealing with different materials (i.e. skin, fabric, fur, bark...). Thanks for doing what you do, look forward to see what ya come up with next!

Any tips on storing and caring for your brushes? I have a few and they are starting to splinter and not keeping a point anymore, granted I dont use them that much only to spot my black areas, but I would like to use them more and use them as my primary inking tool. Thanks bro for all of your videos! I look forward to them every time you post a new one! Keep it up!

You guys may want to get your hands on some Scharff 3000 series brushes. I bought three of them (#2, #3) years ago and they've held their points and were quality like the W&N brushes were back in the day. The Dick Blick Masterstroke brushes are nice as well. I still have my old W&N brushes and use those often too, haven't tried out the new ones but the last few I've bought have not held up and I can't get them to keep a point.

Love these, dude! Have you noticed or are there any differences in right handed or left handed inkers? I only ask because I am a lefty and I noticed the brush strokes rely heavily on the direction that your hand is going. Your content is increasingly getting better, and better every video. So awesome to watch!
@RichardFriendartist
@RichardFriendartist 6 жыл бұрын
Enoch Vaughn what I find is because most times you're working with a variety of pencil lines and directions with that. Meaning what you have actually have to ink. It's probably a pretty even playing field. There's for sure times when I wish that I was left-handed because the lines that I need to do are going the opposite way that my hand actually goes.
@schwarzerritter5724
@schwarzerritter5724 5 жыл бұрын
Enoch Vaughn Why would it make a difference with which hand you ink? Well, you probably need to mirror the video if you want to copy Richard's motions, but aside from that, I see no difference.

Great Video! thanks :D Been drawing since I can remember. But, I just started to use a brush, gotta say I love using it. Although I use one with a cartridge as the handle. Its damn hard to get consistent lines :D. I read somewhere that you have to hold it almost totally Vertical, i find that extremely hard for my hand. When I see you and other Artists here on youtube use a brush, they don't hold it vertical, so I think it might be me doing it wrong, my hand shakes quite a bit when I hold it like that, and it's not comfortable at all xD. sorry for the long comment :) It's nice to see you can make beautiful lines without holding it totally vertical. Gonna start doing that instead.

I've been having that same problem with most Strathmore boards. It's been driving me crazy. It's almost like the paper has a wax on it and causes the ink to bead up on the surface of the paper, leaving a blotchy or scratchy line.

Hey Rich How do you clean your brush before you switch tools? I sometimes just wanna switch my tools like from a brush to a nib but I can't just leave the brush to dry. Is just swirling it in some water and then leaving it enough? How long can I leave it like that before I do the whole "brush cleaner soap and water" routine?

If you don't like Strathmore bristol; Borden & Riley Paris Bleedproof Paper is a great solution. Brush strokes will complete the whole way and it has zero problem with nibs and Rapidograph. It has a plate surface.

yeah sorry it was phrased wrong...what I meant was that was the paper I had in bulk here and had been using...it had become more and more apparent the last few weeks..the paper (a new batch I'd been sent) was not so hot. I can theoretically use any paper I want...so I will look into that Fabriano board! thank you.

Hi! 😊 Sorry if by any chance you talked about this already, at some point, if you did, I didn't catch it! But, quick question if you could help me... Does alcohol (india) ink stain porcelain/ceramic palette? Or does it wipes away like watercolors? I'm about to buy my first inks and don't want to ruin my watercolor palette!

Why a Winsor & Newton Series 7 brush? what makes this particular brush different from other brushes?
@RichardFriendartist
@RichardFriendartist 6 жыл бұрын
Flabiano Gonzales I show 3 different brushes. a Raphael 8404 and then 2 are Windsor Newton. One a size 2 the other a size 3. I've found them to be pretty consistent, generally get a good point, and last a long time. Try different brushes and see what you like.

Can't you use a dish or something instead of a scrap paper? I feel so bad for the wasted ink. Like a plate, put it at a slant, put some ink on it, then dip and scrape on there or something like that. All the best.
