Learn how to speak Dorini: a topic-prominent head-initial language! The second in a series of short tutorial videos. SUBSCRIBE NOW: kzfaq.info....
Dorini is an a priori naturalistic conlang spoken in the world of Achaan. It is a mora-timed CV agglutinative language with evidentiality, multiple topic particles, retroflex harmony, a dual number, and clusivity. It is spoken currently in Dor and the Dorian colonies. Dorini is my second most developed a priori conlang, with over a thousand words in its vocabulary, many sample texts, and a fairly comprehensive grammar.

Just have to ask, is the Dorini grammar inspired by japanese by any chance? I also just have to say, I love these detailed showcases you do, can’t wait for next episode! :D

I like the symbol for "su" in the word "samosu". It looks like a happy cat
@simulanger
@simulanger 2 жыл бұрын
Lol, that's actually the symbol for "o" and then "s" if you mean the two dots on top (the two lines to left signify "u"), but you're totally right, didn't even realize!

Very fun video. Topic/comment system reminds me a little of Japanese, a little of Philippine-type systems.

If I were you, to clear up the ambiguity when the doer of an action ISN'T the topic, they should follow the receiver and/or any other nouns that aren't the topic. So, "Samosu rtunjoki Naji i bashi" would mean "It was with a knife that Naji ate an eel", whereas "Samosu Naji rtunjoki i bashi" would mean "it was with a knife that an eel ate Naji". I don't know if you have an other way around this, or if you're content with the ambiguity, but this is the strategy I'm using in my own Dorini-inspired conlang.

Dope language! What's the ipa on the vowels?
@simulanger
@simulanger 2 жыл бұрын
Basically a five vowel system, but sometimes quality shifts near retroflexes, and also high vowels tend to devoice when unstressed, especially finally.

This is awesome!! I was wondering, for the "Towosu ssi padanka, samosu rtunjoki, kobasu Naji nri" part: What causes "samosu rtunjoki" to be interpreted as "(the toddler) ate an eel" rather than "an eel ate", considering that when there's only one noun the default interpretation is for it to be the doer? Thanks :) And once, again this is amazingly thought-out and well-presented!

Great observation! It's basically because, as mentioned in the video, once a topic put into place that topic will stay as the topic until another topic particle is used. There are two ways to introduce a topic: 1) using a topic particle and 2) on discourse-initial intransitive phrases, by using the noun with its inferred topic. If "samosu rtunjoki" had come first here the eel would've been put in place as the topic throughout and it would've meant "an eel ate". But since there's already a carried-over topic and samosu can also be used transitively, the carried-over topic is used.

@@simulanger Ohh, that makes a lot of sense, thank you for the detailed reply! Just a follow up question: If discourse-initial intransitive phrases do not need a specific topic marker and are inferred as the topic, is there any reason "Towosu ssi padanka" couldn't just be "Towosu padanka"? Are both correct, and the "ssi" simply emphasizes its topic-hood over multiple phrases? Or is the "ssi" needed when a series of actions/phrases are used with the same topic?
@sankalpgautam7652
@sankalpgautam7652 2 жыл бұрын
Or I guess, could it even be considered an anticipator of the transitive phrase used later, in which "ssi" would be a necessary particle, and so it's used "prematurely"?
@simulanger
@simulanger 2 жыл бұрын
@@sankalpgautam7652 Again great question! The difference is that "towosu" is a verb that prefers "nri" over "ssi" for the sleeper. "Towosu ssi padanka" emphasizes the agenthood of the sleeper in sleeping. But actually in this case that's not the reason for "ssi"s inclusion - "the toddler slept" could easily be "Towosu padanka". The problem is that in the next phrase the toddler becomes the agent, in "samosu rtunjoki". The sentence *could* be formatted as "Towosu padanka, samosu rtunjoki ssi, kobasu Naji nri." The reason "ssi" is included in the first phrase is mainly because it doesn't impact the meaning that much and as a principle speakers try to position topic particles as far apart from each other as possible. So "Towosu ssi padanka, samosu rtunjoki, kobasu Naji nri" is preferred. EDIT: Just saw your second comment, lol, I think that's basically what I'm describing so yeah you got it exactly!!

@@simulanger YEAH I got u, So it's like a declaration of the transitive topic pushed to the first mention of the noun bc thats the tendency of the language to have that like topical distance when possible ~ and tysm for the speedy and informative response😎
