Colour mixing is probably one of my favourite things to do. However, it does take some practice and knowledge of colour theory. In this series I will be highlighting different colours and how to mix different shades of them. For this I will be using a limited palette of 8 student grade watercolour from Winsor & Newton:
Turquoise: USA- amzn.to/2F93yuq CANADA- amzn.to/2Cc75HB
Hooker's Green Dark: USA- amzn.to/2TLlcyk CANADA- amzn.to/2STNod8

Dioxazine Purple: USA- amzn.to/2TGdllI CANADA- amzn.to/2EVLN2G
Ultramarine: USA-amzn.to/2YDJhIb CANADA-amzn.to/31hbrtZ
Permanent Rose: USA- amzn.to/2ueqbsc CANADA- amzn.to/2tTtTYc

I've been painting three years & I STILL rely on Emma to break down the "mathematical" properties of color mixing. I feel like I will never ever get this & I'm a complete color idiot! Thank God you have tackled 2 of my scariest topics: color achievement & people! (your face positioning tutorial with the orange ball was nothing short of genius). Thank you for doing the hard work for dummies like me!

She used yellow ocher & orchid with a touch of Payne's gray to make a muted brown for shadows on a white animal. Who would have thought you could get brown from yellow & a lighter purple. Go figure. I'm learning!

Thank you! This series is going to be perfect for me! I started out with a 48 color pan, and I think that was a mistake because I didn’t learn to mix organically. Now, I have gone back a step, bought 10 tubes, and I am actually going to learn to mix.

My son bought me a Windsor & Newton Cotman set from Amazon so it included 40 different colors. If you look at Emma's link below her video, she lists 8 essential colors. I would start with those. I will be using that list when I need to refill my pans. Happy painting!😊

Oh Emma, do I ever need this series. Yesterday I was watching a video, and the artist mixed 2 colors to get the one she needed and I have played around with making black, gray, flesh tones, & shades of green. But not the colors she used. I wondered, WHERE DO I GO TO LEARN ABOUT THIS???? Now I know, you Emma, you. You have got our backs & I am so thankful & grateful for you.

Thanks for this video. It’s easy to get caught up in purchasing more (expensive!) tubes of paint to get a variety. Then you have too many colors and think you need to purchase a new (expensive!) pallet to hold them all! Thanks especially for showing the combinations for green.

I think there is always more to learn about color mixing. Especially if you’re a beginner like me. I have a request for a future video. I’ve been given some Arches cold pressed ROUGH watercolor paper. I’m finding it harder to paint on that the regular Arches cold pressed. How about a video for how to paint on rough cold pressed paper? Does that interest anyone else?

This is false. Blue, Yellow, Red is outdated and wrong. It's Cyan, Yellow, Magenta. Complementaries being Red, Blueish Violet and Green. That is why your green looks so dull.
