In this episode, we take a quick look at one of ancient Assyria's greatest foes, the Kingdom of Urartu. Located in the highlands of eastern Anatolia, Urartu (also known as the Kingdom of Van or Ararat) was one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Near East during the Iron Age.

@@slingadingding1639 Nope. Persians didn't enter the region until well after Urartu was established. Many of the names in Urartu (both personal and geographic) have Armenian etymologies, not Iranian. Urartu was located mostly in Armenia and modern Turkey, only a little bit of it was located in Iran (Urmia area). It's widely accepted that there were Armenians in Urartu (even the Urartian language has Armenian loanwords into it). The debate is whether the ruling class were Armenian or a Hurrian-esque tribe (which is what the language they written Urartian language is).

@hasan veysel erol I know that urartu/hurrians were a people of their own, but they got incorporated to the persian empire (there even was as hurrian based state called 'manna' in azerbaijan province of iran). If you look at genetics, Iranian peoples like kurds, azeri and Persians are the closet modern population to the urartu/hurrians.

@@abuzartalibov1223 We actually don't know what family Hurro-Urartian is the closest to. We just don't have enough data to tell. Some scholars believe it's more closely related to Indo-European. Others don't bother relating it to either NE Caucassian or IE. Mind you, I personally want to believe Hurrian is related to Chechen. But until we get more data, we just don't know. But, if it's of any interest, there are some Urartian loanwords in Armenian, suggesting that the two were in contact with each other for a long time. At least they were neighbours.

Just a note, ‘Eastern Anatolia’ is a term made by Turkish nationalists in order to cover up the fact that it is actually called the Armenian Highlands. Generally speaking it is considered poor form to use the term in scholarship outside of Turkey as it is an attempt to rewrite the history of the region.

❗️The Urartian language used in cuneiform inscriptions was very repetitive and poor in vocabulary (having only 350-400 roots). In addition, over 250 years of use, it shows no development, which is considered an indication that the language had ceased to be spoken before the time of the inscriptions, or was only used for official purposes. The "Urartian language" was exclusively the official written language of the state, while its inhabitants, including the royal family, spoke Proto-Armenian.

If I am correct, the armenian pagan religion went thruought a great revival in the 20th century, and it's a weird peacefull and collaborative relationship with their native christian church. This is because they view both religions as culturally important to their national pride and identity. The ancient temple of the sun god is even used to celebrate public rituals and festivals. Kinda cool. So if you'll ever make a video about the ancient Armenian religion, I think you should also mention this fact. Since, unlike other neopagan religions, this religion actualy has an important national role in modern day Armenia alongside the Armenian christian church.

@@bobsmithradates7346 Meh. You are probably right. But it still had a somewhat important role in the independence of Armenia. Since the movement has antecedents in the early 20th century, with the doctrine of Tseghakron of the philosopher and nationalist political theorist Garegin Nzhdeh. I am fully aware that this thing is not realy practiced as a full blown religion. Since only like. A few hundred guys follow this stuff. I know that it's not realy that big of a deal, and the people who follow it do it simply because of national pride and to have a little fun. I see nothing wrong with that. Many slavic countries do the same. It's all for show. But I think it's cool that they do recreations of old festivals and other things like that. It's all in good fun. 🤷 (Let us be honest here... no mather how much a neo pagan tries. They will never get these things right. It's not just about the god you worship, it's about the mentality too. Our modern views of the world will inevitabily come in contrast with the views of the people who practiced paganism in the past. We are too different)

Thank you for these particular historical information. The period of history that you are working on it, is unique for studying the great book of Shahnameh. Please tell us about Scythian that were living in the north of Urartu at that time. We know that they were allied with Assyrian and fighting against Medes. We know that, they killed "Cyavash" who was ruling Medes while "Dyaokes" the first chosen king of Medes" was in Assyrian prison. Dyaokes was captured in a battle with "Assar Haddan". Scythian occupied Medes for 27 years after killing Cyavash. We Know that, they are the Scythian of Ukraine that forced Cymerian through Darial pass to Anatolia. Scythian then occupied north of Arax (Aras) river. We know that they were defeated by Cyaxares the third King of the Mede and then made allied with Mede to conquer Neynava capital of Assyria. The significant victory of Medes against Assyria and ending Mighty Assyrian empire made Cyaxares son of Cyavash "the Martyror" the legendary king of Shahnameh. Madis ( Madius) son of Partatua king of Scythian plays the role of " Afrasiab" the most devilish character of entire conflict between good ( Cyaxaro, Rostam and associates) and Bad ( Afrasiab and associates) in entire book of Shahnameh. So, please if you can provide more historical information about the conflict between Scythian and Mede at that time, will be considered as a big help to study and explore the historical facts, social and political condition that caused the creation of stories of the book of Shahnameh . n

You points are very interesting, I had not heard about a relationship between the Scythians and Afrisiab of Turan, who I was led to believe was of Turkic origin. Interesting. I'll definitely look at my sources and see what I can find. One day, maybe as I get into medieval Persian history, I'll do something on the life and times of Firdausi and the revival of the Persian language or something like that. @@HistorywithCy It is wonderful that you are so familiar with Shahnameh and Iranian classical literature. But I should add that Shahnameh is an interesting book that never really discovered. First of all Shahnameh is not "The book of kings or The book of Persian Kings" Shanameh in Pahlavi language means " King of books or Collection of all letters" . The language that today called " Persian" in fact is a western accent of Pahlavi language. Pahlava was an Eastern Scythian tribe that migrated from east of central Asia to Sistan ( South west of Afghanistan and south east of Iran. Sistan means: "The land of Siths or Scythian). Pahlava, Suran and Kambuja were already mixed with Asian tribe Huns that were migrating west. After their migration to Sistan, they got mixed with Indus valley local Dravidian. The migration mainly occurred around 200 B.C. At that time Eastern Hellenism started to flourish in Central Asia and in Geography of Afghanistan. Pahlava people were supper Dupper Hellenist. Shahnameh was created by these people under direct influence of Greek tragic theater. Pahlavi language became the common language of entire silk road from Sinkiang china to Syria and from Kashghar to Gujarat. It was the English of the time. They follow " Aiin e Pahlavani' They are called " Pahlavan" "Aiin" means: "code" or "Regulation" or " Certain orders". They worship no god other than "god of Wisdom". They are resisting Aryan racism. Aryans living in northern Afghanistan. They are trying to implement Aryan cast system in entire region including Sistan. According to Shanameh, Pahlavans resisting the pressure and became victorious against Aryan racist demand. While stories of Shahnameh were taking shape, there was no Turkish tribes present in the region or in Central Asia. They appeared in the region after 400 A.D. in second half of Sassanian era. They were in fact Sassanian rival. But according to Shahnameh Rostam's saga ends in Koushanian era. Rostam was killed by his brother in a brutal fashion in the bottom of a well full of javelin and arrows. Sassanian added " Khodaynameh" the Sassanid version of Shahnameh to entire collection of the real Shahnameh. Khodaynameh is nothing other than Sassanian that glorifying themselves against their Turks rival in central Asia. . . .

@Rytheking2 4 жыл бұрын
From what I know the tradition of thinking Mt. Ararat is a pretty recent development with Evangelical “archeologists” using their confirmation bias to say a weird geographic feature is actually the remains of Noah’s ark. The earliest reference to any biblical event happening on that mountain comes from the 10th century. Most Jews and rabbinical traditions view the creation story and flood along with basically everything up to Moses as Allegory or metaphor. Only Christian fundamentalists really go hard into the “Earth is 6,800” years old. The Bible does say it landed in the region of Ararat but the physical mountain we know of as Ararat. The word in Hebrew is Ararat as that was the name of Urartu but it uses it in a regional sense not a defined mountain. The reason many think it is this mountain besides the Hebrew is it’s the tallest mountain in the region so people conclude it’s where land would’ve been first after the flood. Again no one thought this until around the 1000’s though

@@scrummyvision He's wrong. Ararat has nothing to do with Ugarit. Ararat was another name for Armenia as a whole (the Semitic tribes--Akkadians, Assyrians, Hebrews) called the land "Ararat" (or variations, such as "Urartu," "Urartri", "Urastu"). "Armenia" is the Iranian (by way of Elamite) name for the same land as Ararat (we know this because in the Behistun Inscription, the names are used interchangeably depending on the linguistic translation).
