Aquatint, a revolutionary printing process, grabbed the attention of artists and art-lovers across 18th-century Europe. The new technique allowed subtle washes of tone that brought depth and drama to images of all kinds-from erupting volcanoes and moonlit landscapes to biting caricatures and depictions of amorous lovers. Join Rena Hoisington, curator of old master prints at the National Gallery of Art, as she traces the rise of aquatint from its origins in 1700s Paris to Francisco Goya’s experimental 1799 series “Los Caprichos.”

Rena, such a great presentation on aquatinting, and it's relevant, early history. The presentation spawns intrigue and excitement for those of us that are fascinated by fine art. The task now is to find ways to apply printing and its varied techniques to make works of art that can excite the general public. I don't know if it is possible, it seems to be a dying art that only a few are privy to galleries, artists, and a few interested in art. As artists, we have to keep pushing the boundaries and discover new ways to use these mediums.

This is a fascinating tour through the history of Aquatint- thank you! Not surprised it was initially a Dutch invention, but seeing the evolution and perfection of it is really interesting. It had to have been amazing at the time to be able to see / collect art in this way, for people who didn't have access to oil paintings by masters.
