This video provides preparatory material for reading the work of Jacob von Uexküll, founder of the field of biosemiotics.
It is part of COMP 40280 Embodied and Enactive Approaches to Cognitive Science taught to Students in the MSc in Cognitive Science at University College Dublin.
The readings to accompany this class are available here: postcognitivism.wordpress.com...

Thank you very much for this video! I'm working on my bachelor research and my thesis will be a VR experience where you perceive the world through a cat's perspective, so these fundamentals are extremely helpful!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post this. I’ve been searching for these concepts my whole life. It feels so good to be able to put words to ideas I’ve had forever!

I was working on a short essay for my Philosophical Anthropology course and, choosing what I wanted to write about, I stumbled upon this: thank you profusely Professor Cummins for your enlightening words on the matter! Many greetings from the Philosophy department of the University of Bologna.

Really well explained, considering how complex a topic this can be. Well done.

Hello Professor Cummins, I stumbled into this video on KZfaq and I'm not part of your class. Thanks so much for posting it publicly and I learned a lot. Would it be okay for me ask you some questions? 1 - When you say Dewey affirmed that an input-output model has no place for subjectivity, is there a particular definition of subjectivity that he uses? 2 - From this lecture it seems that, although von Uexküll also raises attention to the "subject"'s relation to other animals and objects, it still seems very self-centered and not very social. Almost like this relation he talks about is one's perception of the Umwelt, and not actually a network or relations. Is that correct? Did he ever attempt to explain this meaning of being at a scale above "self", as in in a group of subjects with similar Umwelts?

Is there any probability you will talk about the rising Anderson vs. Friston debate on the functions of the nervous system? The whole neural reuse versus predictive processing/free energy principle. Although some researchers say that there are ways in which a unified picture might be made by integrating data and insights from neural reuse and FEP, Anderson is part of a group of researchers (including Baggs, Raja, and Chemero) that are against the whole PP enterprise.

I am at a great distance from predictive accounts. They are very popular, but I choose not to pursue them, as they do not help my own inquiry.

@@FredCummins Thanks a lot for your answer. I guess you are more in line with Anderson then? He has an interesting book called After Phrenology about how MMH (and modularity in general) fails to be a suitable account of neural processing.
