i disagree, I think it was well paced, I think the framing device works - _well!_ - the characters were intriguing, the rundown of her crimes was interesting... I thought the miniseries was a good medium, it didn't NEED to be more concise, i was engaged from the beginning to the end! hopefully this review doesn't deter anyone from seeing it, neither of us are objectively right or wrong, obviously... some ppl think Better Call Saul is 'boring', and The Expanse is 'overly political', but those are my favorite shows of all time!

Isn’t it because Vivianne convinced Anna NOT to take the plea deal so she could interview her? So she wanted Anna to get less time so that not taking the plea deal was worth it for her. Otherwise she lost out on a 4-year sentence deal. I don’t know, it got confusing at the end

I absolutely did not understand why Anna was portrayed as a protagonist. She wasn’t scamming people because she had a moral compass - she was doing it because she’s a delusional narcissist. If you see interviews with the real Anna, it’s infuriating how nonchalant and unsympathetic she is about everything. She is extremely classist too. What baffles me is that they portrayed Rachael, the woman who got scammed out of $60,000 as an antagonist for setting up Anna. Rachel wasn’t rich, she was a working girl. Anyone in her position would want justice for being scammed this way. Why did her friends take Anna’s side, when she’s so rude and they all knew that Anna scammed Rachael out? It honestly makes no sense what the purpose of the show was. Anna isn’t a good nor a figure to look up to. Everything she did was self serving and she got really lucky, so why make her sympathetic?

Yeah, and the journalist that got conned by a child, somehow it's her editor's fault? This series portrays women as though they're children that can't be blamed for their own behavior. I thought the point was going to be how sexist it is to excuse women and blame everything on the men in their life, as though they have no independence or agency. That it's equally wrong for men to take responsibility for women's failures as it is to take credit for their successes. But no, apparently women are just children that need to be coddled and micromanaged or else they'll run into the street and get themselves hurt. God, i miss 70's feminism. They saw themselves as equals, not victims.

While I have no idea what actually went on with the real life Rachel, in the show she is portrayed as an opportunist, somebody quick to spend Anna's cash. When time came to pay back some of that, forced by circumstances, she agreed but reluctantly so and probably only because she was scared and expected Anna to pay back in full. She was happy to enjoy her holiday when it was payed by someone else, but couldn't fathom helping Anna back because she was supposedly "rich". In that perspective it makes sense to me why everyone took Anna's side and not Rachel's. She was not a good friend at all, on the show of course.
@sheagoat
@sheagoat 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was baffled by the whole Rachel thing. They never showed Anna giving any of those characters a reason to like her so much, other than throwing money at them-- in which case they're all just as hypocritical as the show portrayed Rachel to be. Anyone in that kind of debt and about to lose their job would have done the same thing to the person who put them in that position. And she was wrong for that? Neff was an opportunist who followed Anna around for her money and for her connections. Her loyalty after that made no sense.

I feel like this show focused way too much on “Vivian” who I found to be pretty un-likable and not the most believable. They didn’t do a great job of showing why/how people fell in love with Anna. I really didn’t see a reason for Neff to stick by Anna until the end. The show felt like the writers produced a solid 6 hour story, but someone said “actually, I need you to add about 3 more hours of BS”. The show writing is really bad, they tried to manipulate viewers into somehow believing that there was something good about this Anna, while she is such an unlikable person, she conned her connections out of money and shows no remorse, its surprising to see the writers kept trying to push us to think she was a Robin hood or a good friend.

I indeed never understood why all her friends, the journalists and her attorney all seem to like her so much... They keep emphasising that she is young and smart... But just someone young and smart doesn't make other people root for you that much... It kinda caught me off guard when the journalist talks about 'we could win' with Todd... Because I thought her biggest reason in it was her article, not siding with Anna. Why does she want Anna to win? She has the facts and she knows she is a con. I tried to find out what made anna so great, and likeable, but couldn't find it. I mean clearly she is a lost (and perhaps mentality ill) girl, but it doenst make us like her. I also missed some parts in the story line that needed clarification: 1. The story of the journalist and 'the boy who lied'... she decided not tell her story in an interview and then it kinda died out... She didn't get shamed, or we didn't see it anymore??? 2. The story of her parents and her childhood... They never explained what made her parents distance them from her so much. There must be something that happened to break all bonds with your daughter...they tried to portray them as being bad parents for not being at her trial, but why? 3. The friendship with neff, what did Anna give her besides 100s as tip and some high end parties... Neff also kept repeating she knows Anna is from money and she never lied. So either she thinks Anna is a great friend but we don't see it or she still believes Anna is innocent and rich even after she is found guilty. A lot in the story line doesn't make sense or doesn't add up, or I don't see what the movie makers intended me to see.

The fact that they only focused on one major part of Anna’s crimes for less than two minutes was sort of disappointing. Anna was cheque kiting A-LOT, I don’t even remember if they even mention the crime by name. And the scene where her lawyer and the journalist get upset she is being sent to jail for the crimes she committed, yet there are guys who tanked Wall Street in 2008 didn’t suffer any consequences. What is it that you want?! Anna feels ZERO guilt for what she did. If you let her out straight away it would have just emboldened her to be worse. She committed the crimes, she was caught, they proved she did the crimes, she had to pay the consequences for what she did.

I agree, I would’ve loved to see it from Anna’s perspective more. But I think the choice to go in the other direction might have had to do with the fact that no one has ever gotten the real story about Anna. It’s tough to do a biopic from someone’s perspective who is a pathological liar. Like literally the years she was in Germany are unaccounted for because her parents aren’t speaking and either no one really knew her during that time or if they did, they too aren’t speaking up. So then she just appears in New York, but again…no one knows the real story except for the scams, which from Anna’s perspective weren’t scams at all. So yeah, it’s tricky…I know what you mean though. Basically if they had made Anna the main protagonist they would have had to go even harder on that disclaimer about the story being made up. Lol

No, you weren’t dumb for missing why they were cheering. It is something I think the show struggled to make clear and the only reason I think I understood it was because I’ve watched wayyyy too many interviews and profile pieces about this story. Lol. Basically, Anna has a personality that comes off as rude and abrasive but she’s somehow able to get people to care about her, even root for her. The real-life journalist who interviews Anna for her story said that though she knew Anna was a conwoman, she was very likeable and after meeting her multiple people said the same thing…which is fascinating considering how in the same breath people call her rude. But either way, I think the show was trying to convey that Anna, her crimes, and her story is complicated emotionally for those who knew her (and didn’t get scammed by her that is) because on one hand they knew she was a conwoman but at that time Anna still came off as a young, naive, 20-something who was in over her head and made a mistake. Her interviews and comments since that have made it clear now though that she’s a scammer and social climber. Period.

The character didn't evolve because full on narcissists don't change. If they are honest about what they feel, or don't feel, they have no regrets and no remorse, and their highest emotional peak is anger against the world not being exactly how they picture it, not giving them what they consider they deserve. I watched a couple of interviews with the actual Anna, and she does look unmoved and unbothered. Another reviewer, who used to be somewhat of a New York socialite, said something that rang true to me: "I didn't care about this show as I didn't care about the case of Anna Delvey when it came out in the papers, because I've met dozens and dozens like her, face to face. Anna is small fish compared to what's going on on the real life scene, everyone tries to scam their way in, everyone is faking till they make it, and everyone knows everyone else is fake, until proven." I actually liked that almost none of the characters were relatable, because when you get to the gist of it, all of them were scammers, from the journalist trying to build a career and neglecting her pregnancy, to the attorney and Anna's friends and lovers, who wouldn't have given her a second look if they had known she was broke when they met her. Yes, the show is goofy at times, but for me, it worked. I didn't feel it glamorized anything, it's just a show of what a masquerade society is when it comes to image and the presumption of richness, or fame.

What I couldn't understand was putting her child's birth in so much danger by heaping all the angst in to finishing the article before she arrived?! If, as @think story suggested, the show better focused on how the reputational damage was to negatively impact the child, it might have 'helped' explain why was willing to risk its birth. Maybe that's why the journalist and lawyer were so focused on going above and beyond to prove Anna was a victim too; because they'd both made a choice to put the positive impact she'd have on their careers above everything and everyone else...xxx

This was one show where lite r ally blamed the victim. They vilified the character Rachel. Any lawyer worth their weight in gold would've seen past Rachel "dropping a dime" on Anna and fought for every reason why no one on this planet wouldn't have done the same thing. A crime, is a crime, is a crime. Just because rich people got robbed and you're not rich doesn't make it any less a crime. The character Anna Said, "Why would I take ? $60,000 When rich bankers were going to give me $40 million." If you can do it to rich bankers, confidently, you can do it to anyone. The thrill if the hunt that's why. No one's a victim to these types of people, until they're cornered then they become they only victims. It's like the movie was promoting a grifter, swindler, a con man. It was good until then, when people made Rac y El the villain and Anna the victim

@@Prismaudee I disagree. Too many stories on psychopaths wrongly add personalty traits, characteristics or pedagogic explanations that simply do not exist in these cases. Reducing what makes them extraordinary. Most crimes are crimes of passion or include criminals with personal conflicts, development of character etc. Psychopaths typically don't become psychopaths for understandable reasons, there may be contributing factors but the problem is there from the start. Sortof like you don't become autistic at 15 because of a troubled background. If you want to be true to a real life story it's important to not provide sympathetic excuses where it doesn't belong (for both victims and perps). Plenty of fiction gives any opportunity for unrealistic nonsense. The fact is what's real in these cases is "unbelievable" which is why psychopaths get away with so much before being revealed.

Just over halfway through and it has dawned on me just how emotionally imbalanced Vivian and Jake's relationship is (in terms of support, career and otherwise). I get she's going through a pregnancy and tough time in her career and it has been like this for women for a span in time... but aren't we trying to be equal as a society? Just thought today that she's never once been the comforter / supporter for Jake's career... we don't even know what he does for a living. He's just a prop for her and the story. Edit: lol his name is Jake not Paul lmao goes to show how much of an afterthought his character is and the 1-dimentional role he plays.

The show was a mess. Finished it thinking that everyone in it got conned. Especially the reporter and the lawyer. They both felt victim of the same persona that was victim-Anna. And having the reporter, which obviously did a very bad job being objective and unbiased, give pointer and consult on set makes the whole story very one-sided. Even Anna's friend Neff got to have a say and consult, her being happy she got all those Benjis, but not Rachel, no, not her. At the end of the show, I think the clip said it best, I didn't know what to feel. She's a sociopath and a narcissists, why do people still think she was doing anything of it for anyone else. Absurd.

The actress who play Anna is perfect, she gave all the emotions that make a psychopath, a psychopath., great actress!. On the other hand, the actress who played Vivian (she used to be in the series Veep) is horrible, full of silly faces, overacted, terrible actress, she doesn't give a dam for her unborn baby, treat her husband like dirt, is only me, me, me. I wonder if Vivian is as psychopath as Anna. I enjoy the series very much, there are some very good characters, very well portrait. I particularly love the actress who play Anna's friend and lost $60,000 because of Anna. It's very relatable and the anguish she felt was authentic. I recommended the series, just close your eyes when Vivian appears on screen.

Coming late to Shonda Rhimes's work I found in general very unimpressed by her work. Finding many of her works very unrealistic. Finding her a bankable name and maybe a bit of a spent creative force. What turned me off to her was Station 19, with in the first episode she created 6 things that would have gotten at least one of the characters fired from their job and taken down the whole administration of that job. Also, the character that this happened for was an unlikable character.

They did try to show Anna as a robinhood character, but why would they is the real question. Anna can give two shits about anyone else, especially “poor people”. Everything she does or ever did was self serving. The real Anna still believes she’s a part of New York’s high society, looks down on regular people, and by every definition is an elitist. I would understand rooting for her if she did scam the rich with the intention to better the lives of those who need it, but that’s absolutely not the case

I did think the show is interesting because the story of Anna is fascinating, BUT I felt confused after watching the show. I didn’t get why all the principle characters started rooting for Anna after they knew the whole truth. Their motivations were the most inconsistent or underdeveloped. I think the show did a great job with Anna herself, but that’s because they wrote her exactly like the real Anna. I can tell the writers had to invent the lives of the supporting characters, and so their actions and relationship with Anna didn’t make sense.

i think that the show's focus on other's relationships with anna would be great if it was to show how sociopaths can easily play with people's emotions and manipulate them (for example Neff's character, the way she was devoted to anna so much) but overall it feels like the show portrayed anna as some kind of hero and it seemed pretty subjective sometimes (like the whole rachel situation) imo the show could've been done so much better

Vivian was a highly unrealistic character in the show, she's supposed to be this career journalist but her storyline shows us her being UNprofessional and like a teenager rooting for Anna out of nowhere, it was especially extremely idiotic how she, a journalist, gets presented with negative information about Anna from time to time, but she rejects it or becomes defensive about the information relayed. She;'s getting a very interesting story whether it sheds a good light or bad light on Anna. her wanting the article to succeed cannot explain why she was rooting for a criminal, also yes, the room of journalists waiting for Anna's sentence, that was beyond stupid and unrealistic, why would they be cheering for somebody they know is a criminal? Also, I don't think the people who she fooled would be putting Anna on a pedestal like they constantly did in the show. I had an ex that swindled me out of a large sum of money, in no way do I nor my family and friends think anywhere near fondly about my ex. I think the writer was trying to show us viewers how manipulative Anna was that people she victimized are actually defending her, but it didn't come off like that, instead of us viewers feel empathy on the manipulated victims we just feel that they are all dumb The whole drama about pregnancy and her career seems very unrealistic as well, she was having a pregnancy not diagnosed with cancer, this is 2022, career women had been having kids and still rocks their career. It felt like a forced social commentary on women choosing between family and career in the 70s.

Didnt understand what exactly the series meant. I started off like ok she is the villain, she is the journalist , other people and their journey of how they got scammed and finally they would show how she got trapped in her own net. But plot twist, the series went on to make the villain a hero finally, a likeable character. What is even more annoying is how attached those side characters got that they were fighting with their own spouses in her defense, the one who got conned became the villain, everyone getting sad on her being proven guilty, the news channels and social media making her a star calling her a style icon. Like what the fuck is wrong with you people?? I watched the whole series in anticipitation as to when will this over confident bitch, the one who is even foul mouthing her own lawyer(who is literally her one single support) get sentenced, but nooo she turned out to be the star actually. What the fuck.

The whole point of the story is that the boogeyman doesn't always look like the boogeyman we imagine and that's how people get scammed. If Anna was a totally one dimensional raging maniac, nobody would have been fooled. But sociopaths like Anna know how to twist the knife just so. You don't really feel it until you look down and there is blood everywhere. I'm not surprised she got people to root for and be on her side. Think about recent history and see if you don't see that same thing.

Focus and execution are *everything* when it comes to a story. Just look at Fincher's "Zodiac." The story isn't really about the killer - it's about the baffled, obsessive response to his actions. A more objective-yet-biased POV like that of a reporter or investigator would lend very well to a case like Anna's, because at the very least it provides *A* lens through which we as the audience can view these events. Iilluminaughtii recently did a great overview of Anna and the repercussions of her actions on a broader scale, if anyone wants to know more about this story.

There’s a lot here I agree with, but you did miss the fact that due to the Son of Sam law ,that money was divided between two banks ($140,000) and the rest of the money towards legal representation and to the individuals financially affected.the one who stands to gain is Rachel.. her story I believe was bought byHBO and script writer Lena Dunham… which will be from Rachel’s perspective. Seems all of this is a testament to Anna’s stoic narcissistic nature. She’s simply above explaining herself to anyone because they aren’t worthy to know or too stupid to understand. I believe that’s how a story about Anna ended up being about everyone else. Ironic and also perhaps a strategic business move. Quite a popular guideline for the entertainment industry, known as : always leave ‘em wanting more. I choose to remember her as someone who completely lacks capacity for genuine emotion. Along with a disgust in anyone that cannot support themselves, or her financially. Have to hand it to Julia Garners portrayal of the ultimate pretender.

I enjoyed that it was focused on a number of individuals rather than simply one. Rather than have everyone else just be a character in her play; it dove into their own lives and the people they play. It shone light about identity under capitalism Ex. When Anna asks Neff who she is; Neff replies, 'I want to be a director.' All these folks are straining to succeed in the career of their choice and it is the most defining factor for them. It is not just Anna who thinks this way. I see a lot of folks wishing it didn't go into such detail on everyone else's lives but I personally think it was an interesting and different choice. Oh and the man going off about her doing a number '2' with no toilet paper. I just thought it was comical. It came off as a lie, created by a man who had wanted to sleep with Anna and slipped in some false and disgusting gossip when he didn't get what he wanted. Which isn't uncommon. As for Neff getting snapping at Becky, I mean Rachel-also comical for me. At Rachel's reactions. Also shone light on her character; being so easily scared by that. Also comical when Rachel asks the man with the British accent how it was to grow up in Morocco (assuming she thought because he was a POC he was from there).

Same here. I somehow liked that this wasn't scripted to make anyone out to be very attractive. I found aspects of relatability here and there in various characters (a couple more than others of course) as the interactions between them unfolded, but to me the entire script reflects the very premise proposed of why this young woman was able to get so far with her scam, ie that the climate in NYC today is all about ambition, the hustle; that fake it till you make it works better than authenticity (because you can't even trust your coworkers not to throw you under the buss if shit hits the fan and jobs are at stake). The premise is this could ONLY ever happen in a city where the wall street tycoon is revered (a fish tank of psychopathic culture covered in many wall street themed films), and only ever trumped by royalty or "old money" (as this con artist also understood) simply bc that's the one thing you cannot generate with your own ambition and hard work, Unless like Anna you lie about it. Nobody in the story (except perhsps the coworkers in Scriberion) is an altruist, doing anything for nothing in return. On the contrary, everyone has one angle or another on everyone else they deal with in the story, to further their personal interests, goals, ambitions, etc. Alot of films and especially series about sociopaths/psychopaths are engaging exactly due to flaws scripted to make the criminal more charming or believable through general relatability or psychological explanations that are quite atypycal for psychopaths, ie false. Several of the here characters don't describe Anna as fun or even nice, she's described as being a mean bitch which several admit is attractive to them (and the trainer uses as a incentivising slogan too). Anna is often disrespectful of others "lesser" jobs, apparences etc asking why they dress like shit, waste their time on crap jobs etc, and somehow in this environment it doesn't repell everyone, but some feel challenged to raise their game, and the premise being NYC today is all about game, only the players got played by a girl who cared even less than they do because she had nothing to lose at all. And none of the why's are moving or emotionally engaging to anyone outside this game. She's guilty but she didn't get the loan. If she'd gotten it and the social club had been an immediate hit, it would be a different story. We all know that. It's like the stock market itself. Perceived value, perceived potential is everything. So everyone pitches and projects. I expected to see Anna be queen bitch with more panache maybe. Thrillingly so. She wasn't. The strangest bit about this story was how anyone didn't notice how super- cliché-Russian she is. Like text book Russian golddigger even without psychopathic tendencies. She claimed to be German and by no means did she have a German accent nor behave at all like a continental person with a reasonably decent background. All the fixation with labels and treating service persons like trash, this is typical of a specific type of latter day Russian culture, thanks to the likes of Putin and organised crime. She'd have never been believed to be anything but Russian in Europe as she was portrayed in this series. Why would Americans not see and hear something so obvious? German accents are audible and unmistakable. Perhsps one of the books explain this...

Yeah I genuinely loved it, I felt like the unsympathetic portrayal of the characters was kind of part of the charm if that makes sense? Like Anna is terrible, her friends are terrible. And I LIKED watching Anna scam these awful people, honestly. But Vivian isn't awful, I will say that. I don't think the show hid her past, either, it hung over her the whole time. And her relationships with the other residents of "Scriberia" in contrast with Anna's predatory friendships was great! I loved them. They made a wonderful anchor in the show. The most important part at the end when Anna showed vulnerability at last and hopefully asked Vivian to visit her isn't mentioned in this video, but it really touched me. Anna doesn't change because narcissists don't, but Vivian did. She recovered her career and realized how important being a mother was to her by the end. I dunno I just really loved this.

What I never understood was why she kept spending even when she was in a hole. The moment she got money, she gave it all away, knowing that she had nothing. Like she went from penthouses and giving out $100 bills to eating random leftover food and being homeless. How does that make her smart? She never invested or saved any of the money she stole and wasted so much of it immediately on temporary things ( no house or car or something that was truly hers). Her business was an idea that's it and an expensive one that even when she knew it fell through, she kept digging. So, no, she wasn't a mastermind.

This show could've been amazing if they had a better cast (Anna, Vivian's husband, Rachel and Todd were great but not everyone else) and if the writing was good. There’s not always going to be character development, and you’re not always going to like how things happen or how these people felt when it was happening in real life, you’re not supposed to “like the character”, in real life people are shitty their entire lives lmao I do agree that it could’ve been a shorter series, but maybe Anna D isn’t the protagonist because they just didn’t want to give her the satisfaction (???) (she does have mental problems you know?), but still the story wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for her so I don’t know what to think about that.

Exactly. The story is about the journalist and telling the full story... not Rachel's one sided version. I wanted all this content of Anna's friendships and relationships. I like it and thought it was done well. Tons of detail the public wanted.

Based on a true story doesn't make it a fact. There's a lot of bullshit in the show that doesn't line up if you read about it. But as long as you are entertained right?

Exactly, that's the whole point - she has no remorse. I think that's almost more impactful than showing her character development. Sometimes people just don't change.

Ive watched this thing and I found myself thinking that Vivian should be thankful she had a job in journalism because she’s was a terrible investigative reporter. Damn near every breakthrough and development was done by those other old writers and they let her take the credit

I read the book so was very excited when I heard a movie was coming out. Very disappointing and I agree with every point you touched on. I stopped watching as I could tell early on they weren't going to go deep and unveil how she really did what she did. Hard to not picture Ozark scenes while watching. So many missteps...

I get that as a tv show the story didnt follow typical guidelines like making clear who the villain was, or what they thought of Anna (is she a modern day Robin hood or a criminal that stole from her own friends). but knowing the real story that it was based on, i think they just showed exactly what happened and tried to remain as close to what took place in real life as possible which i actually appreciated. I like that they didnt iust depict the obvious black and white take on it that stealing (especially from individuals and not just big corporations) is wrong which makes her a horrible person. They also hinted at her possibly being praised in certain viewers’ eyes for doing what men get away with in business everyday. they didnt try to push the narrative either way with their own opinions, and let you decide for yourself. Once the yt videos and documentaries about her started coming out, they have always only talked about her crimes, and having watched all of them, i actually found this refreshing that the show dove deeper into exploring the people in her life. It took me a minute to get past the cheesiness of the show, but overall i was very pleased with their take on the story, being surprisingly unbiased in comparison to everything else out there, and how they really delved into all different aspects of her life and the people in it. I can understand your feelings on the way the show was handled from the standpoint of someone completely unfamiliar with the case, but for someone that has followed it from the beginning, this was surprisingly refreshing.

For years now, I’ve tried to avoid media featuring real-life criminals. This applies to news reports, documentaries, TV series, movies, etc. The reason is that the main requirement for media is in direct conflict with the message that should be communicated to the audience. Media has to be compelling in order to reach a wide audience, but that trait should be in no way associated with real criminals. Once you make criminals compelling, you provide one of the strongest “justifications” of crime in the minds of would-be perpetrators. It’s been said over and over again: If you want to use media to deter crime, make it as boring as possible. The rational and mature audience will still grasp the message and the delinquents will be given less to look forward to.

It could have been a great show if they have would taken the topic serious. I thought it was entertaining, because it was created like a comedy, but I would have preferred it much more if they would have shown the abyss of the psyche of a person like Anna.

It was far from a good show. But, I’ve worked on finance (I assume many in the comments have too) working with banks is BORING. There is nothing good to show besides what was shown. And it takes lawyers time to do due diligence. So that’s why the show filled up the “waiting time” with the portrayal of Rachel and Casey’s stories. They hit home a lot more because we are more likely like Casey and Rachel than Alan or the guys from Fortress.

I just finished episode 6 and I couldn't agree more. I don't care about any of these side characters. I do however enjoy Anna, but maybe that's because Julia Garner is amazing. The episodes that are showing us the story from her different friends' perspectives are just a drag. I think this could have been a movie or a 4 episode show.

here's the thing. I think they could have made this so much better by simply taking the Mean girls Route and putting vivian in the WRONG. And then facing the consequences of also, in a way, being drawn into Anna's scam. Majority of the fascination a lot of folks have with anna is going "oh wow how could they have been drawn in" and then getting obsessed with the story, not even realizing that that compulsion is the reason she was so successful in the first place. There was so much focus Vivian had on humanizing Anna to get the story out of her and putting her in the 'right' as a protagonist that the series forgives a lot of vivan's unethical, if not frankly, evil actions. Tangling herself into the court case, overpromising things on multiple angles, *stalking her family who were very much against being brought into the story*. But everything turns out okaaaaayyyy just fiiinneee!!!!! The family talks, the story is successful, she does everything to justify the means for her babbyyyyyyyy. That sort of storyline rang about as hollow as the scam email you get insisting your credit card number will help dozens of poor, poor families in need. There could have been a much more compelling narrative if the series wasn't hellbent on keeping Vivian in the morally correct light, and I think they fumbled it.

It looked like telling the story through the writer and her friends was the only way to get any story and a more accurate story because it didn't seem like Anna told much of anything and her reality was very delusional so her words couldn't be trusted. I completely agree they should've actually showed the writer's career being destroyed instead on constantly eluding to it. The writer's character was also very annoying. I think the series exposes scam techniques that people should look out for and shows how people can be complicit in being deceived

Wow- you earned the F out of this “subscribe” click. Not only are all your arguments spot on, but I would like to add a couple opinions of my own. First and foremost, the tone of the show really did that one poor friend dirty- the one she saddles with that debt from Morocco. Like yeah, I found her rather annoying in the beginning but after seeing the horrible impact that had on her life, it was almost infuriating to see how they try to paint her as nothing more than a dumb, unlikeable clinger who deserved it? And on top of it, the other friends (who were lied to and put through major stress and trickery by Anna)- CHOOSE TO SUPPORT ANNA? Who almost ruined this girl’s life. Who they had been majorly manipulated by and who Anna had repeatedly insulted. The one friend (not the one played by Laverne Cox, the one who worked at the hotel- made me so angry. She judged the living F out of that poor gullible girl and verbally attacked her for not sticking by the person who almost ruined her life? Who put her in debt and almost cost her everything? Wtf Also, I’m probably in the minority here but I hated that reporter even more than Anna- she treated Anna’s case like it was the most important goddam thing that ever happened on planet earth. She threw her husband and newborn child on the backburner over it. It was one thing to prioritize story that would further her career- it’s an entirely different thing to go absolutely BONKERS like she did, so overdramatic and aggressive at every turn, screeching about the details with a wild look in her eyes like 90% of the time. Yes that may be her character, but I’m worried that poor actress who already looks older than she is- doubled her wrinkles. Like my god, we get it: for some ungodly reason Shonda R wants us to root for Anna the soulless sociopath and criminal who wouldn’t give a rats ass if any of her hypocrite friends or family members died. Even the scenes with the family did nothing other than confirm that she’s simply awful and that’s it. Something we knew the whole time. And yet the show paints her as edgy and is just begging us to like her. Like her backhanded comment about the reporters weight at the end is supposed to be some slick, edgy & greatest compliment of all time. The reporter who goes so far as to treat her like it’s her own child who deserves all the help and praise in the world. Fck. That. So glad to finally hear someone call them out. Shonda you suck. Edit: but I must say Julia Garner is an incredible actress despite the sucky writers

What bothered me most about the series was at the end when people were sympathetic/supportive of ANNA! Why?! She had no redeemable qualities whatsoever. After reading Rachel's book, there are also some deets that didn't match up. This series was meant to be a biopic, but the Rachel & Jesse scene in the taxi was inaccurate, among other factoids.

I so agree. It was so meh that i was glad to watch the final episode and i only watched so far because i thought “well its shaonda rhimes its gunna get better” how incredibly wrong I was… also i listened to a side by side of the Real Anna vs. this version and they sound nothing alike (to my ears). Not saying that its easy by any means or that the actresses is at fault because i don’t believe that to be the case just saying that it was jarring and completely took me out of the show at some points.

I agree but while the character is unlikeable, I really love Julia Garner and think she did a great job. I found the older journalists in 'journalistic-Siberia more fascinating than the main journalist and Annas' lawyer was great too given what we were subjected to but truly I was hoping for a focus on 'the con of high fashion, the art world, the big banks'... Nef was a good character but for such a smart girl, we never see what it is that charmed her about Anna.
