I feel this video fails in one big way; it doesn't consider historical events in explaining what takes place in the last episode, especially in not knowing about the battle of sekigahara between Toranaga (Tokugawa) and Ishido, nor what Toranaga does to Ochiba and her heir once he secures power.

The 1980 version is in my top 5 TV shows of all time and hugely influential to me personally, having started a lifelong interest in Japan and Japanese culture. Yes, it has some dated elements to it and some flat-out cheesy music and dialogue elements at times, but it still is an absolute masterpiece and the version that I will always prefer. It was absolutely culturally influential in general in the US by the way and is the thing pretty much most responsible for the rise of Japanese restaurants, food, products, and all things Japanese to US consumers in the 1980s. For those that are critical of the 1980 version, I have a few things to say: First, the 1980 production was mired with problems and logistical issues, so it's almost literally a miracle that it was even made, especially considering the budget, time, and other many limitations. No US production of that scope or scale had been filmed in Japan before (or since), so pretty much everything done for the production was completely new for everyone involved, and many production needs had to be invented or handled on the fly. The level of creativity and effort put into the production, and the coordination of the American and Japanese film crews is frankly probably unrivaled. Second, the 1980 version is very faithful to the book in many cases. The script elements that differ were made as they were for very good reasons, and not just made different at the whims of idiot producers with stupid ideas, as is so often the case with film and TV projects today. Third, the casting in the 1980 version was inspired - much better than the casting for the new version. Toshiro Mifune is an acting god; and, though I like Hiroyuki Sanada, he is by no means a Mifune. Plus, Yoko Shimada made an entire generation of American dudes back in 1980, me included, fall in love with her. Anna Sawai fulfills the current role, but I'm sure many different actresses could have sufficed. Whereas I can't imagine anyone else replacing Yoko Shimada in the 1980 version. Anyway, the 1980 version will always be the only version for me for a wide variety of reasons.

Danny killing cercei first then going north always made the most logical sense to me…. She had the larger army an armada of ships and 3 dragons she could’ve dealt with cercei first and very quickly regrouped and then marched all the major house armies north. If she would have attacked the red keep first cercei would have stood no chance, and she would have had the dorn, Tyrell and Greyjoy armies to March north and easily beat the night king with many more men to spare. This would have been a much more logical sequence of events.

The extremely slow explosion buildup was weird to me. Especially when the shockwave didnt start until way after the explosion started. Almost like there were multiple explosions in the same place.

The orange robes were in deference to the color's use by Buddhist monks and may have been a more accurate depiction of Jesuits of the time. It was probably an attempt to be more accepted and respected in a religious sense by the local culture.

Season two was much MUCH better than season one. Still not got over the shock of the Chief taking off his helmet in season one lol. Can’t wait to see how the story develops. Bring on season 3 please!

Considering the time and that it was made for TV the 1980 version was quite good. I'd read the book several times before the series came out, and was not unhappy with the TV version overall. The modern version didn't focus on the romance aspect oddly.

2024 blackthorn didn’t have much of a personality like the 80s version. And some of the casting wasn’t as good. Like Rodrigues was amazing in 80s version. And although I’m a huge fan of 80s version the 2024 version did eclipse it both in visual and story. But I must say 80s version was more faithful to Japanese mannerisms and history of the time

Well in episode 10 of the remake it starts with a very old anjin san at home in England with his grand children looking at his katana so his future. Is known however he is constantly handling mariko's cross however they depict him throwing it into the ocean in the episode.

Queen Maeve has Butchers baby and at the end of season 4 Butcher will sacrifice himself to stop the virus from killing Ryan and his new child, who will also be a sup. I can see Butcher high on temp v stud over Homelander with the sup killing virus in his hand. Homlander looks over Butchers shoulder and smiles. when Butcher turns round he sees his new baby being held by Ryan.

I have seen both now, and I would have to admit while the new version does look so much better, I still prefer the 1980s version.

They are both very good , the 1980 one was excellent considering it was shot 44 yrs ago . Initially I preferred that one but on second thoughts the new version is more “ complete “ and the fact that you can actually understand the Japanese dialogue makes a huge difference .

1980 version was very much lighted up. Night time indoor scenes seemed like there were fluorescent ceiling lights. I watched the 1980 version back in the late 1980 during HS, but I can’t recall anymore if there were subtitles, coz up until now, I believe there were.

I think the modern version has the edge in production technology and in the integration of language. Acting is equal and the script is good in both cases. But unfortunately the main character of the new series displays a dumb man (like a British football fan) while the 80ies version shows a very intelligent navigator with lots of charisma. So the this terrible casting mistake of the new shogun ruined it for me. Sad!

1980 Shogun is the closest to the book and is better than 2024! As good as Hiroyuki Sanada is he cant hold a candle to the incomparable Toshiro Mifune! Yoko Shimada was Mariko Anna Sawai not so much. Richard Chamberlain was Blackthorne period! Cosmo Jarvis sucks!

I think the girl didn’t exist. What existed is the panacota, and we saw a scene in the middle of the movie that is actually the ending. When the chef finds hair in the panacota. My belief is that they wanted the panacota to be the message but once the panacota reached the top level the message the chef got was “nobody wanted to eat this because it’s not perfect” so the whole journey was pointless

I can't stand the character Maximus! I don't like the actor. I don't like his design. I don't like how he is written. I just can't stand him. I like the guy that is his replacement as the squire of Titus that ends up his squire when he takes the place of Titus...thats exhausting to say lol. I hope they keep him around as a ghoul. He could be Walter Goggins (Cooper) ghoul squire!

It really surprised me how in universe the show is. If that makes sense to anyone other than myself lol. I just didn't expect everything to be so identical. Usually shows or movies waste the already laid out available stuff to use from the game world.

IMO there is no “better” version except one: the book. James Clavell was an exciting storyteller. By turning a page you never knew what would happen. Unpredictable and therefore an unprecedented suspense.

The modern depiction would seem much more accurate as far as clothes and hygiene. You would never see such clean white shirts and perfect hair on John Blackthorn like the 80's version.

Well; there is a lot more notable "junk" in that store like a mininuke, plasma-pistole, and even something of a novelty as a pipboy 2000, hidden in the background; also the framed pictures u see on some of he "interior" walls are also from the game (FO4+76 mostly)!
