When I was a teenager working in a gas station, a regular locksmith customer told me, "Locks only keep the honest people honest." Holy cow, he is right.
@TheMatrixofMeaning
@TheMatrixofMeaning Жыл бұрын
I had an argument with some friends about this very fact. There is literally no way to secure yourself from a determined intruder without turning yourself and your family into prisoners. The best way to be safe is to fly under the radar and appear as if you have nothing of value and invest in good external lighting and an alarm system. The locks are there to keep out the amateurs. A professional will always fond a way in and trust he already knows what's inside, where it is, and what weapons you have. If you have to use guns it's already too late. He knows they are there and if he still comes in he has a plan to kill you if necessary. Buy the best locks you can to keep out the fools but be careful who you welcome in as well.

@@TheMatrixofMeaning pretty much this, you shouldn't live in fear and in all honesty, the house that shows the most weaknesses is still the best target to a thief. The best thing is to lower the odds of a break-in as most jobs done aren't planned, they're done on opportunity.

As a locksmith I'd like to clarify a few things here for those who might have questions. Yes - this can be done, and with some practice it will work. No - it doesn't really make sense to make a lockpick or duplicate a key like this. A paperclip lockpick is rather soft and will probably be worn-out quickly. Same with the key. Better Lockpicking tools can be bought for cheap. The padlock and the other lock shown in this video are both easy to pick. No - these methods cannot be used for all locks. I do think that the homemade lockpick is pretty cool though 😎

Where the hell is the part where it opens all (most\some) locks? Is the key mold thing different from the paper clip thing? This video fucking sucked, worst part about it is the click bait got me. the best locks are the old bar dropped in a rack like the doors in old times had, I have thought about rigging my front and back doors like that and leave the locks too. even if someone picks the lock and you are home, they cant physically open the door. I use variations of that now such as closet and tall metal cabinet doors that I swing back and jam the door when I am home. being unconventional is always to your advantage.

The first method works pretty well but you have to get a feel for it. The one instrument has to go in and out fast enough to make all the pins simultaneously be in the air while you're using the other to turn and unlock the lock. You have to keep holding your turn while you're moving the other piece back and forth real quick. Like I said it takes some practice to get it down but if you start on a simple door lock and just do it several times eventually you'll get the hang of it and could probably even do the lock you were talking about having trouble with.

For anyone wondering. This is standard lock picking tools he's making. And the lock he's using is notoriously easy to break. Raking mindlessly will only open the easiest of locks. If you want to learn how to do this properly buy the tools (which to his credit he made well), and learn to feel the tumblers.

The super glue ran down the top of the door , and I had a hell of a time prying my door open . I'm surprised he made a rake and tension tool out of paperclips that were strong enough to be used. But high quality spring steel or stainless ones are readily available for under $10. And that seems like an awful lot of work that will probably wear out after a few uses. Anyways, great video! Impressed with the know how!

What you want are called a city rake and tension wrench. This is what they're duplicating. Paper clip is probably low quality steel and it won't hold up as well as real picks made of spring steel.

"any" lock is the overstatement of the century. Wave rakes work on a lot of "standard" locks but won't work on any specialty locks or wafer locks, tubular locks etc. Also the second one literally would only open one singular lock and requires access to the key for said lock. Would be easier to take a picture (less time needed with actual key) then just buy a proper blank and file it to match. Also that was too much effort for a wave rake, you can buy them easily and they are cheap
