Love gems, but on a budget? Here is the cheapest, fastest and most long term reliable way to get in at the grass-roots , learn and grow yourself into the gem trade.
Those interested in the full story of the hand-sculpted fishtail eternity rings that I made as I learned these lessons, check the Note and Compass video with the link below.

This is a great inspo. I decided to play to my strengths. I'm retired and I was a graphic designer, and I am very good at color matching. From my first parcel of 7 fancy 4mm calibrated sapphires, I have two matched pinks and a trio of pinkish orange little darlings. I am going to see how many matched ones in those colors I can collect. I like the size. It's big enough for a ring stone or stud earrings. I'm a collector, not an investor. That implies selling my things at some point.

I think the best investors are effective collectors. At a certain point, you need to see enough stones to understand what is worth collecting. That means that you have to sell off some of the things that you know are less rare so that you can afford the rarer items. A lot of the top gem dealers are doing just this. They sell what they can in order to not have to sell the top pieces.

Thank you Mr. Peter. Im newish to jewelry making after 50 years in a different trade. Being a past professional, I am intensely getting into the gemstone and jewelry trade. I reasoned immediately in my jewelry making the significance of what you humorously layed out!! Calibrated stones of exact mm size are not an easy procurement on my side of the trade. I, of course need exact mm size for flush stone setting. Im never guaranteed exact size when buying parcels or packets of gemstones!! And the stones are never sold to me at a discounted price being different sizes!!! So, I completely understand what you are saying there!! I am currently looking to source decent eye clean faceted stones at a good wholesale price. If anyone has contact info for this, ( 1mm to 5mm) stones, please post here if possible. TIA!!💍😊🙋‍♂️

So there are two routes to take here. If you want well calibrated stones, I can source sieved parcels such as described in this video that are close to a size and you can calibrate them yourself. This is the cheaper way and will get you a few shades and sizes within certain tolerances. The other option would be to go for a precision melee dealer that has machine cut stones with very fine grading of cut and colour matching. This already has a premium built into it naturally, as they have spent their work hours doing all the sorting, and their cutting process is arguably less crystal efficient and the cost must be built into their business model. I would google "precision melee gems" and go with whichever company suits you, if you prefer this route.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for this video. I've had an on going argument with my husband for several years about my eternity wedding band. He bought it many years ago when he was low budget. 😅 Now he hates it and says it looks cheap because the diamonds are small. I disagree. The diamonds, while small, are very good quality and very uniform. I can't get him to understand those things matter more than size. Maybe if he sees how much work goes into matching a set of stones he'll finally get it.

My pleasure - pretty incredible how emotional and symbolic jewelry can be eh? What ideas we carry around with us, and what the purchase meant at that time, what does it mean to us now etc etc. Theres a lot of unpacking to be done. Hopefully my videos will be of service to that end.

I have been fortunate to see a few Ethiopian sapphires in person here in Bangkok. Not a large supply reaches us at this time, but they can be quite nice.

hey peter great videos what do you think of investing in gemstone rough
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks 9 ай бұрын
Hi there~ thank you. Gemstone rough is a peculiar game and it requires a fair amount of acumen. It is definitely something that can be invested in, but I would not advise it for anyone who has not dealt with it enough to be willing to gamble intelligently. The folks I know that deal in rough with sense still have a certain amount of reverent fear. Rough is good.... if its good... and terrible if it isnt.
