My father lost an eye as a 14 year old (in the days of old when knights were bold!) on the first day in the training school working a lathe when safety glasses were not supplied AND he paid for that lost for the rest of his life. Not only in the suffering having to wear a false eye but many other ways ie: in excess on car insurance, loss of peripheral vision and the constant regret that he was so young, restricted employment and in those days never received any compensation for his loss. So Lee my boy, wear your safety specs as they are plenty in supply not like in the day of my father! The time scale does not matter what is important is that two eyes are better than one! Please take note for your own sake and the personnel you employ as your role as employer could change...

The old machines are so much better built and last so much longer than the new stuff

😁 Been in a LOT of engine machine shops since the early '70s and let me tell you, THEY ALL have a few shelves full of rings, bearings, pistons, gaskets, special fasteners and all sorts of other "stuff". To most people it would all be total junk but out there somewhere there is someone who has been looking high and low for one of whatever it is in the box. Maybe on the new website add a "bits and bobs" page (or pages) and slowly identify, catalog and list it all.

If you are boarding out the ceiling and walls to make an office...stuff a shed load of insualtion in! That's going to be a hell hole in summer and an ice box in winter otherwise. Those tin roof sheets are not office friendly. A decent layer of insulation will keep the temperature a bit better. Probably still going to want aircon or some form of vent/extractor setup too.

No mention of the large crack in the kit car block coolant housing ???

Whenever I hear about props I hark back to a project mate and I did with a MK1 Fiesta van where we sketched it all out and rear fitted a Cologne 2.8 using a very sketchy drive to a Sierra diff and sketchy chopped and welded drive shafts... well we kinda skimped on the cradle like used a couple bits of box to hold engine and box in place and relied on the thin Fiesta metal to kinda hold it all there and we were racing it round me uncle's scrappy and the prop came away from the diff... next second this thing like the fist of Thor was flailing around punching big holes in sides of van and the engine tore free so just as we exited the flailing prop decimated the front seats, literally tore them to shreds... Funny as the van self destructed alongside my previous "project" where mate and I turned a MK2 Capri into a convertible except no one told us about chassis strengthening and stuff like that lopping off roof with a gas axe and we were smoking around the wilds of south London posing like a couple geezers and I drove us over a speed hump and well that was the last straw as the chassis became like a boomerang, prop pulled out and had to get me uncle out with a flat trailer to come get the destroyed Capri and had to do the walk of shame as a pair of dingus's to explain things to the bloke who just could not stop laughing...

Hey Lee .... We have a Meze floor overhead. Done our assembling for years up there !! Now though we are told by HEALTH AND SAFETY we cannot !!!! Because there is only 1 way up/down , no secondary escape route ,we cannot work up up there. So check it out before you build an upstairs office . No point in having a so called clean room then you have your loading bay door open allowing all sorts of dust and debris being allowed in. If i was building a clean room for engine building it would have to be positive pressure environment so that any contaminates are kept away from the builds.

Firstly, I accept I have no knowledge of your circumstances. I have been working for someone in similar circumstances, however after taking the plunge and upgrading the workshop equipment. The difference in the quality of work seriously improved and we were more efficient. Of course, it is very east for me to spend your money.

No it was my ex foreman losing an eye in the 1960s that convinced me to wear safety glasses . He heard a bang from a grinding wheel bursting and turned around and a piece took his eye out.

It seems that there is an irresistible temptation to store stuff that "might come in handy" at some time in the future. About 1% actually gets used but the remaining 99% takes up valuable storage space...forever. 😀 I worked in the construction industry and we had a similar problem with manhole rings, pipes etc being stored in our "yard" but never getting used. So most companies have sold off their yards, retired their storemen and just order exactly what they want, when they want it. So wise decision on the mezzanine. 👍

Just a thought, but if you are waiting on parts and the lathe, now is the time to find out why your milling machine has a noisy motor/drive. Leaving things until they break, especially with the fact that you are an engineer is questionable.

Universal joints require the flanges to be parallel on the shaft, or it will always vibrate. Having the engine not perpendicular with the axle is going to be a problem.

Barum Merchandise:. Here is an idea. Most pro race teams have two kinds of merch. Version1 is for fanboys ( this is the stuff that you sell ) and Version 2 is for your staff and race team to wear. From experience with our race team, Beanies, stickers and coffee cups should be enough to get you going. The problem with tshirts, jackets and hoodies, is that you have to keep several sizes in stock, and the buyers want to return these items because they have ordered the wrong size. When you ship a finished engine or cylinder head back to a customer, always send two Barum Engines stickers with the completed job!

I would of welded a steel spacer to the prop but then again I`m a drinking man and give advice after knowing what went wrong.

Make some shelf space for merch, as well. Really enjoying following you boys' plans.

Ive seen a BMW M3 where someone had bolted the centre prop joint upside down speed hump diaster waiting to happen, Propshaft falling off can put the car on its roof very easily, Ive also seen a BMW hit that hard in front the prop shaft come throu the floor

I thought motorbike gearboxes were designed to drive a sprocket and chain and go to great lenghts to get exactly 90⁰ alignment of that chain . What makes this gearbox suitable for an off centre propshaft ? I can see it making no difference but doesn't the kit car chasis flex around also putting even more unwanted angles onto the drive train ???

Interestingly, 12.9 grade bolts should not be used in cyclic loading applications such as braking or suspension, and I suspect driveshafts would also qualify as a cyclically loaded system. Try 10.9 or 8.8 that aren't quite as hard and brittle

I spotted some very important historic wheels up there! From a Mk2 Austin Ruby (circa 1937). Don't forget, the Austin 7 is the most important car in the history of UK motoring. (Of course, I am not biased in my opinion by my owning a Ruby).

Tailshaft donuts only hide mis-alignment, they don't cure alignment issues as you have unfortunately found out. Also, bolts are designed to clamp parts together, not keep them in alignment, that's the reason dowel pins were invented, ie. like the ones between your pressure plate and the flywheel among many other applications.

In most of the world when someone says "K series" it will automatically be understood to be Hondas finest.

Any prop shaft running straight as possible will run smoother, its because of the fast slow effect of a Hardy Spicer joint when it runs at an angle, another excellent video by the way.

I remember having a escort with a CVH engine, I went to change the clutch and stem seals and ended up re ringing reshelling and fitting a new cam and lifters and about 5000 miles later the cam had to be replaced again. Yes back in the 90s they were making cams out of cheese and the lifters weren't a lit better that was when I went german and haven't been disappointed yet

I like the admiration expressed for knife-edging the crank webs with an angle grinder. Mind you, Allen Millyard can build F1 engines using a toothbrush and a file.

Get the website up and going, have your shop there and get a older vehicle section to sell all your goods, you'd probably be surprised at what you have tucked away $$$

For merch, consider selling old Cosworth pistons that you would normally pitch. 20 quid plus shipping might be a way to convert scrape to money.

the old Morris Marina (aussie version at least) had a 2 piece tailshaft with a sliding joint at the diff

Jaguar when did Le Mans 24hr the few years before won it they had all the cars fail it was it prop shaft angle so was constantly having to deal with angle difference with each turn to fix it they had to change angle gearbox -diff so more inline

12.9 bolts for a propshaft? That's pretty soft. Should be at lest 8.8 at least?

Lee, why do you have to have a donut, i.e. intermediate drive line bearing, when the drive is as short as yours, about a meter. Most times donuts are used on long, several meters, drive lines. Sounds to me like you need to remount the engine to get a better alignment between engine and differential.

Eye patches with a Barum Logo; left and right versions for merch? I know you love LED lights but you should really look at the health implications of them; they can damage even PPE wearing eyes though most of the eye damage is currently being attributed to high mounted oncoming proliferating LED headlamps. You are on your last set of eyes fingers etc. you might want to keep them. If you really want to see gold standard facilities look at big name Race car rebuilding facilities; I worked in several; much cleaner than any Hospital Operating theatre; (you cannot catch MRSA or MRSE either as also not part of the furniture) importantly with air filtration and positive pressure sealing and invariably epoxy floated floors without cracks and seams to hold any dirt and less-off gassing plastic. Black units demonstrably are a problem showing fingerprints so readily; mineral or synthetic oils alike. Gloves or just Barrier creams or nil? Acoustic absorbing panels and roof insulation might be very sensible as both deaden sound and you are also on your last set of eardrums. Do not be complacent on safety; hindsight can be very painful in every sense.
