With our latest Units of History episode we explore the galaxy of star wars lore and star wars history. This documentary covers the history of the Jedi Knights of the Republic.
We begin with a discussion of the origins of the Jedi Order. This has been disputed by many sources but can be traced back to the worlds of Tython or Ahch-To. It is here that early force users created the beginnings of a group which would eventually evolve into the Jedi Order. We cover the Rise of the Jedi and the Old Republic as well as the origins of the Sith which would put all three on a collision course for massive wars over the centuries.
We then turn to how knights of the old republic would have been armed for battle. This includes looking at light saber lore including Kyber crystals and the Dark Saber. We then look at the training and organization of the Jedi Order. Finally we look at the service history of the Jedi Knights. This will have involved massive conflicts like the Sith Wars, the Mandalorian Wars, the Jedi Purge, and the Clone Wars. Specific examples are given for Jedi battles like Revan at the Battle of Malachor V, Mace Windu at the Battle of Geonosis, and Obi Wan Kenobi at the Battle of Kamino.
We've loved diving into the rich history of Star Wars lore and the team was truly inspired by the work of past projects like Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic which brought the universe to life. What units of star wars should we cover next? The Sith? The Mandalorians? The Clone Commandos? Let us know!

There were many Jedi masters who weren’t on the council, qui gon, luminara, I don’t think dooku was ever on the council but I’m pretty sure he was a master. The rank of master and the Jedi council were two completely different things, but generally Jedi on the council were masters.

Also if possible, can you clarify whether you used Canon or Expanded Universes, because the Expanded Universe has much more information on the ancient Jedi's origins and activities before the Clone Wars, as well as more information after the Clone Wars, and also during the Clone Wars For example, in EU the Jedi were formed after a civil war among a precursor group known as the Jedai'i who focused on a balance between the Light and the Dark sides of the Force. The Jedai'i were based on Tython and members who failed to keep the balance were sent to one of the two moons of Tython to find their balance, the moon of Ashla or Bogan. Eventually the followers of Ashla and the followers of Bogan clashed (ie the people who were exiled to each moon) resulting in the end of the Jedai'i, the destruction of the Followers of Bogan and the creation of the Jedi Order. Also Tython became uninhabitable due to force storms

Amazing Video! One small but very important critique I want to add is the idea of mixing both Canonical or Disney Canonical elements as well as events and history that take place within Legends. While I do believe there is merit in both timelines, mixing both were used for the sake of this video for creative liberties and telling the full picture of the Jedi. However, there is a lot of nuance left at the cutting room table for the Jedi and their ranks regarding their time in the Old Republic. In the case of Revan, his faction was fed up with the inaction and unwillingness for the Jedi High Council to intervene, as was instantly regarded as a war hero and savior due to his efforts throughout the conflict. However, other events such as the New Sith Wars (the Exar Kun Conflict) and the Great Hyperspace War were also directly involved Jedi ranks and each conflict HEAVILY relied on the Jedi to stop these conflicts from ever happening AGAIN as they were the bloodiest in Galactic History. Then of course we have the later wars fought by the True Sith Empire and the Old Republic, and the thousands of years after which culminated into the Jedi Lords being formed, a sort of utilitarian Feudal take on the order. Canon lacks any of these established events and we are only left with hints that there were wars fought between the two factions, nothing concrete. In essence, mixing the timelines does yield much more context, but context regarding THOSE separate timelines. The Jedi of Revan's Era were also extremely different from the Jedi of the Prequel Trilogy. In both Canon and Legends, each of these timelines have different contexts that measure each of these events and individuals. Still, I wanted to write this because it's important to realize the differences between Jedi in both timelines. The most specific example of course being that in Legends the Jedi were relatively more Dogmatic than their depiction in Canon, but then again, Legends has much more material by which we see the idea of the Jedi evolve. AMAZING VID ALL AROUND!

13:30 For anyone unfamiliar with Star Wars lore, you might find it interesting to know that contrary to how they're portrayed, the Jedi were actually pretty miserable and irresponsible military leaders as a whole, frequently using needlessly risky tactics and failing to account for the physical limitations of their soldiers compared to themselves. While they did improve somewhat over the course of the Clone Wars, they were really thrown in headfirst and had to learn on the job. A depressingly small number of the Jedi sent to Geonosis to rescue Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padme survived. Of course this is really to be expected. The Jedi were never instructed or trained in modern warfare. They were never meant to serve as generals. They were peacekeepers and diplomats. And this was expected, it was even by design. Don't forget that the Clone Wars were orchestrated by Palpatine to destroy the Jedi, both physically by killing them, and spiritually by dissolving the faith of the people in the Jedi. The truth is most Jedi were not popular with the clones who served under them, who often felt their Jedi commanders were reckless and out of touch. And of course being outranked by literal children wasn't great for morale either. Especially when those children didn't even receive so much as a formal reprimand for getting entire squads wiped out through sheer incompetence and reckless insubordination. Many Clones probably didn't need brainwashing chips in their heads to make them turn on the Jedi when order 66 came down.

you should really be more careful with symbology and the vehicles for these videos... Revan's sith empire had a very distinct logo stemming from the Star Forge, and there were no venators 5000 years BBY... but Harrower class dreadnoughts...

Noted. We will keep trying to catch all the small details but it can be tough. Feedback is certainly helpful

@@InvictaHistory OP is right, but since you mostly use info from the new Disney canon it doesn‘t matter that much, most of the lore about the history of the jedi is from the old Expanded Universe/ Legends canon, and much of the established info about the history already contradicts the old canon. Maybe you should focus on and use the Legends/ EU timeline, because that‘s where the vast majority of the info from. And it‘s a lot of info. Good video and much effort put into it, but kind of disappointed you don‘t prioritize the already well established lore timeline. Disney calling their new timeline canon doesn‘t really mean anything especially, when George Lucas mostly disapproves of it, as he made clear in some of his interviews. The new timeline isn‘t simply really popular among fans, the only reason there are a number of fans who somewhat accepted it is because of the generation of fans who grew up with The Clone Wars animated series which became part of the new canon, and because there are many characters and references to it appearing in other media. But even that show show itself took much inspiration and even lore from the previous Clone Wars multimedia, such as the as the dozens of official Clone Wars era novels and comics. For the Old Republic era history, the pre disney continuity timeline is a must, Dawn of the Jedi, Tales of the Jedi, Knights of the old Republic and The Old Republic, Knight Errand, Darth Bane and some parts on that era in some of the older source books and guides are relevant for it. It‘s of course a lot, so for some overview you could use Wookiepedia, which is fairly accurate on much, and at least the official Star Wars website even had links to articles on it, at least before the Disney takeover, there were also articles on the star wars website on the lore itself, but I think the „databank“ in its old form doesn‘t exist anymore.
