Welcome to Arrakis - A primer video on the lore of Dune by Frank Herbert. You can play the awesome Dune boardgame through our sponsor GF9: www.flamesofwar.com/gf9online...
In this lore documentary we seek to bring to life the world of Frank Herbert's Dune series with animated video of the key aspects of his work. We begin by tracing the history of the imperium from the Space Age of the 21st century through the mellenia of expansion that would see the Empire of Man become the Empire of a Thousand Worlds. We cover the pivotal moment that was the Butlerian revolt against the Thinking Machines. In its aftermath, the galaxy was reformed into a new galactic order.
This was made up of three main pillars: The Landsraad, The Imperial Throne, and the Spacing Guild. We discuss each of these with a focus on the Great and Minor houses along with House Corrino which currently sits atop the throne. In addition we also dive into the emergence of new players like the Mentats, the Navigators, and the Bene Gesserit.
Finally we turn our attention to how these various galactic factions of the Imperium of Man come to see their plans within plans come to a head on Arrakis. To set the stage for this action we dive deep into the planetology of Dune including its ecology, the sand worms, spice melange, and the Fremen.
I've loved diving into the lore of Dune and hope this makes a good primer video for the Dune Movie 2021 as well as your reading of the Dune books as I assume that most Dune Movie Review videos do not get into this much detail. Stay tuned for more episodes on Dune explained.

It's fun to watch videos like this and learn just how deep some sci fi franchises today, especially Warhammer 40k, have roots in Dune. Imperium of Man, the God-Emperor, even the existence of Navigators (albeit rather decidedly different in how they work and why they're needed in 40k) owe their inspirations to these books.

@NATIK001

Yeah, this lack of knowledge is why starting a new Spice cycle elsewhere always failed. Watched this movie in theaters. Hands down the best sci-fi/fantasy movie that’s out there at the moment. I really felt the ‘power’ of things that were supposed to be powerful. I felt terrified for the characters when they were terrified. The consequences were truly real. A lot of stories nowadays will tell us that something in-story-universe is ‘powerful’ or ‘scary’. But then they die instantaneously whenever the writers need a convenient death. You never really feel the consequences or the ‘weight’ of it. This movie did it all right. Watch it in theaters! It deserves every view it gets. They did an excellent job.

I just saw the 1984 film at a bad movie night, and a lot of that film now makes sense. I can understand now why the 2021 film is split in two. I've been skeptical about Warner films splitting films in two since Harry Potter 7, but this one seems justified.

I only ever successfully read the first one, but I always had the feeling that the precience aspect of melange and most especailly its use by the Spacing Guild were secrets that weren't shared outside of the Fremen and the guild. Most people only took enough to extend their lives, not enough to cause prescience that anyone would notice or blue-tinted eyes. Somethinb I'm surprised you didn't note, Arrakis wasn't always a wasteland and the Zensunni didn't always live there. The Zensunni were driven off a different world and made it to Arrakis as reffugees. And once Arrakis had open water. Someone did that to the planet. But basically a good effort. I'm just nitpicking here.
@keshav3479
@keshav3479 2 жыл бұрын
It's not really possible for anyone to do that to the planet since the worms, which are a product of the desert, could've only evolved into their current state after millions of years - long before humanity. I think it's more implied that Arrakis is just the aftermath of a mass extinction or major climactic changes.

What makes Arrakis frustrating is that the humans can't really do anything to improve the environment like killing the sand worms or change the atmosphere and soil to make it less hot and hazardous, even if it's within their technological capability. Because any changes to the ecosystem of Dune can potentially cripple the spice production. The substance is produced through the elaborate process where every part of Arrakis' ecosystem plays a role. So there is no way to live here then just accept the world as it is and go with the flow.

@@jakobinobles3263 As you said to maintain order and not having all Houses teaming up against them. From the video you can see that the Imperial house actually only has 100 votes in the Landsraad. Tho they have control to rule others, they still have to maintain their image and position with the landsraad. My other point would be that ruling an empire is already hard enough to add also the weight of maintaining spice production on a literal wasteland planet.

@@MohamedRamadan-qi4hl The British Empire removed control of India from the East India Company not because it wanted to retain control of the trade, but because of a series of avoidable disasters that had occurred under the EIC's rule. And while that occurred in 1858, you have to remember the Suez Canal was completed only 11 years later. Even so, the Crown did not have direct control over the Raj, they sent a Vice Roy who ruled in the Empires name. That Vice Roy was selected by the Empire and could be removed by the Empire, but essentially ruled India in the Empires stead. While the Vice Roy may have been given broad instructions, how he did that was essentially left to him to decide, which is almost EXACTLY what is happening on Arrakis. A vice Roy is appointed and his/her task is to ensure the Spice flows. How they do that is up to them. In fact choosing how Britain ran India as your example of why the Emperor should take control is literally the worst example historically you could have chosen.

I preferred the Sci-Fi channel miniseries. The David Lynch abortion was useful in understanding the design elements of the Dune RTS games by Westwood Studios (which I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid), but otherwise is a really bad B movie. The Baron was a fat, diseased rendition of the Joker, if the disease got to his head, and Patrick Stewart could not be taken seriously as Gurney Hallek with that stick up his arse.

The Dune encyclopedia (not written by Herbert, but published with his approval) suggests it to be more something akin to an interstellar Cultural Revolution, with the implication being that far more humans were actually killed by jihadists than by robots. Basically, there was physical conflict, but the original intent seems to have been less “man vs. machine” and more “man vs mechanist”.
