Here comes a vlog from our first experience celebrating Eid in the neighbouring village. My husband and I don't have much experience from Hui culture or Muslim culture, so when a friend invited us we were happy to go, and she was happy to introduce a little bit of her culture and her tradition. I do not have a lot of knowledge of Islam, and if I have done mistakes in the translation, I do apologise. When writing the subtitles, I was asking my friend for a lot of advice, and I have also done a lot of googling to try to make the best translation - but there might still be mistakes. Translating between languages is hard in itself, and when there are more languages involved that neither party speaks (Arabic) it is even more difficult. I have done my best, but if you notice mistakes, please feel free to write a comment!

My friend father 's always told me that Muslim in China are the most committed and faithful followers rather than from other Asian contingent and Arab countries. I watched a lot of videos about them, I can understand what he told me totally true.

Really interesting. When I travelled in China I depended on Muslim restaurants for vegetarian food such as hummus etc. very good. Diversity in China is a big part of the culture.

Wow, Miriam, what a beautifully made video! I felt like I was watching a documentary, not a KZfaq vlog. Thank you for this window into a culture I know almost nothing about. While very different in many aspects, seeing the rural culture with family and friends coming together in celebration, making food over a wood fire, children playing, animals in the barn, etc. reminded me of our small town in Mexico (where we have a home, in addition to our home in a large city in Canada). I thought of all the places around the world where people continue to live this lifestyle, not exactly “simple” because it is very hard work, but with quality of life benefits that often aren’t recognized. There is something healing about being more connected with the earth, with animals, with family and community. Thank you for your beautiful videos and sharing your life and experiences with us all. What a treat! Comes to think of it, as a Han Chinese, I’ve never interacted with a Hui Chinese. The only book I read about it was 《穆斯林的葬礼》。 It’s so refreshing to learn it through your lens, from your beautiful and talented host friend, and the elder man of wisdom and his fountain pen writing in both languages. Thank you so much for your sweet comment! There are millions and millions of Muslims here! The minority group Hui (in the video) is the largest Muslim minority group here, but there are several others too.

Like most westerners, you don't know many things in the world, which is normal in the western world. After all, Westerners only watch news like CNN, BBC, and New York Times. Jeffrey Sachs said that if the United States cannot name the two cities in that country, it will not be allowed to attack that country, and there will be no war in this world. In this information age, it is so ignorant not to know that there are Muslims in China. Even if you believe what the Germans said about China's genocide of the Uyghurs, you must first understand what the Uyghurs are? They are Muslims, and their lives are getting better and better. This is so beautiful. And when i saw those twisted bread being deed fried and turning brown, i said to myself, “we have that where i grew up in the Philippines”. I don’t know if that can also be found in other regions in the Philippines. I remember having them when i was a child. We call it lubid-lubid (we call a rope ‘lubid’. Maybe because of the same twist design like a braid). Anyway, when i was watching while it was deep fried, i said to myself that they’d surely coat it with sugar. And i am right! Thank you for sharing another culture with your viewers. It makes me feel that although the world is big and we have different cultures, in some way there is connection between all of us.

It's so fascinating to me that we are all so diverse, yet we all share some kinds of sources of entertainment and socializing. I'm from Spain and watching these kids play with an elastic band made me nostalgic, since I also used to do that when I was a kid! It’s a pleasant surprise to see the content of today’s video cuz I absolutely love cultural diversity and Muslims have a significant presence in Singapore. It’s a norm in my life to have Malay-Muslim classmates since nursery and then colleagues at work in my adult life. 😃 Malay food was what I missed most when living abroad. This video reminded me of the time when I was at the popular Hui food street in Xi-An. I was so delighted and felt a sense of connection and familiarities, from the ladies in their headscarves to the Halal logo on the food 😄. Thank you for this beautiful video! Hi Miriam I just wanted to share that im 30 yrs old and seeing those children play brought back such memories. When i was a kid, growing up in NYC we played "chinese jumprope" in school all the yrs growing up and the kids still play it now!

05:09 i was taught that way to play rope. We called it chinease jump rope. I was a double dutch jump roper as a kid. I did competitions, and at one of them we were introduced to this style. Soooo much fun and sooo many memories! I had forgotten! Thank you so much for making me remember! This time spent learning and existing with new friends looks Very special.

How lovely that you shared this celebration with us. It was interesting to watch folks work together to make the dough twists, and to see the gentleman write in Arabic and Chinese. His handwriting looked so neat. So many different traditions around the world and it is nice to discover some of them. As you say, so many things we have in common when celebrating - getting together with family and cooking and eating being a few! Sansan and Lian are really growing up. Beside Indonesia 🇮🇩, China and India has huge Muslim populations. Many ethnic groups in China are Muslim besides the Hui and there are the Turks, Uighur, Kazakh. Each have their own unique practices.

Even here in Hong Kong. As well as Chinese Muslims there are families like my inlaws who are mixed Indian/Chinese; then Indian and Pakistani Muslims plus a number of Muslims who are here as asylum seekers/refugees. All have their own traditions but most love God and pray a lot.

If by "Turks", you mean Turkish people, then that's incorrent. China doesn't have a Turkish minority. It has Muslim Turkic minorities i.e. Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Salars, Kyrgyzes, Tatars, Uzbeks. It also has Muslim Mongolic minorities (Dongxiang/Sartas and Bonans) and Iranic minorities (Pamiri Tajiks who speak Sariqoli and Wakhi languages).

I wish I had planned it out a bit better so that I could have gone to the city the first days, one of the main streets that passes by the larges mosque is closed off, and is instead full of prayer mats and Muslims in prayed, I've seen videos on Chinese social media, and it's a really spectacular sight!

OMG this is such an amazing video! I love the most watching kids play with elastic bands (I played this as a kid and had been meaning to show it to my kid) , the innocent eyes of the sheep, the wise old man's explanation of how they practice Shanhadan and its equivalent writing in Chinese characters, and finally, families all gathered around making dough twists together. I have watched 2 times, the father of this Muslim lady showed the meaning and value of Islam. They are Chinese Muslim and the Muslim have been in China nearly 1000 years. Rich culture and tradition ❤

Muslims have been in China for more than 1,000 years. The earliest mosques in China are: Xi'an Huajue Lane Mosque: It was built in the first year of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty (724 A.D.).

Great video. Love to see the diversity in terms of religion, culture, food, and ethnics. But let do not ignore the fact that most part of Qinghai is still developing, lots of governmental efforts needed to be put into both alleviating people of poverty and keeping them a great living standard.

I'm from Indonesia, I also celebrate Eid al-Fitr , And now I celebrate the Islamic New Year/ Hijri calendar 1 Muharram, do Chinese Muslims also celebrate the first hijri? I have been to the Xi'an, Hami, Urumqi and Turpan areas where I met many Hui and Uighur Muslims. Of the many Chinese people I have met, I like Mariam's accent, her speaking style is easier to understand and not too fast for speakers foreign

The reason people asking you Miriam what ethnicity is your husband is because he’s quite hairy for Chinese. Most Chinese are not as hairy….except for my family as well hahaha….for a "Han chinese( Malaysian ethnic chinese)

I'm an ethnic Chinese from Singapore, and my family the men can grow full beard. Actually the concept of Han Chinese is less of an ethnicity but more of an identity (identifying with the glorious Han Dynasty), just as some people call themselves Tang ren 唐人。Don't you think esp Cantonese sounds very different from Mandarin but a Cantonese is still categorised under Han ethnicity...Then you can never tell you are fully Han or whatever until you do a DNA test...eg. quite a few Han Chinese who did the test find themselves having a mixture of Mongol (who are very hairy), Japanese, Korean, even Arabic blood etc. No one is 100% of one ethnicity unless your tribe remains as one deep in the forest and never mixed.

My bf is American Chinese and his whole family from Hong Kong. He's very hairy...his brother as well. Then brother's son and daughters are all very hairy. I also follow c-entertainment. Seen a lot of hairy Chinese celebrities.

@ 7:00 the Shahada (Testimony) is written in Perfect Classical Arabic (and in Mandarin). Good Diction! But Arabs (& Persians) are very close to Siin (China) and Hind (India).... Have been even be4 the Tang Dynasty (Chang'an).. Oldest Mosque is The Huaisheng Mosque in Guangzhou as old as Islam itself

Western writing specifically English goes from left to right. I notice that the Arabic writing is from right to left like Chinese writing.
