Dua Lipa's side said they made it and realized later it was INXS. If it wasn't intentional it must've been, at the very least, a subconcience use of the INXS riff. That riff was so famous, so iconic and central to this whole song. It's a pretty intentionally constructed riff, not just a throwaway, so would be pretty unusual to come up with the same, exact riff completely independently. They added Andrew Farriss, the music writer for INXS, as a co-writer of her song, so that'll rigthly make him a lot of money.

And hutchence. Andrew and farriss and hutchence co-wrote everything on kick and hutchence is credited on the dua lipa track.
@hackapump
@hackapump 11 ай бұрын
There can be no doubt the co-writer who brought that riff had heard Need You Tonight and had it embedded somewhere in their brain. It’s too unique and odd yet distinct to just ”happen” - (three quarter notes followed by half a bar of 16th notes, it’s goofy). Good thing they admitted as much and gave Andrew (and Michael?) credits. These things can happen by accident though, and frequently do. However, if the Dua Lipa song had 10+ co-writers, like pop songs today tend to have, it is pathetic none of them recognized the riff - and no one at the label or in management. (If you know so little about music history you’re probably in the wrong line of business). I don’t think Andrew (or Michael’s estate) care too much about the money though - INXS were huge in the late 80s and 90s and made a lot more money than is possible with a hit song these days. It was a different level of success than what Dua Lipa enjoys, and it was a market that actually paid for music. I imagine they care about recognition of who wrote the thing though.

@@hackapump To be fair to today's music writers (and I am not particularly a fan of the current iteration of pop) a lot of the reason why there is 10+ co-writers (or Beyonce with 8+ etc) is because they sample and lift so much from the past that most of those song writers credited, like Farriss and Hutchence, are merely attributions and not involved with the construction of the song. Taking a look at the Dua Lipa song I see that 3 of the 'song writers' are actually the producers for the song (Johnson, Johnson & Watt) which makes me think it might be more along the lines of what someone like George Martin did for the Beatles & Phil Spector did for many, only now they're looking to get that song writer's residual rather than just sharing the Producer money.

There is a great scene in the INXS docudrama about Andrew jamming at home while waiting for a cab to go the airport and then hitting on this riff, he then goes on to record a demo for Michael to listen to all the while the cab is sitting in the driveway with the meter running.

1988 was a very good year for INXS...they had four songs that made the Year End Billboard Hot 100: #95 (my fave) "Never Tear Us Apart", #65 "New Sensation", #46 "Devil Inside" probably my 2nd favorite song of the year, and the actual #2 song of the year "Need You Tonight" which was only eclipsed by George Michael's "Faith".

It's impossible to convey today just how dominant, ubiquitous, and thoroughly enjoyed INXS was in this era. If you were a young American during this time, you understand completely whether you liked them or not. If you weren't, then there's just no way to describe or explain it to you. INXS wasn't just a band and their music, they were a phenomenon in that time and always will be.

“Need You Tonight” was an absolute worldwide hit at the time and dates back to 1987. The great Michael Hutchence unfortunately died far too early and was found hanging in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Sydney on November 22, 1997 at the age of 37, shortly after the release of the INXS album "Elegantly Wasted". According to a medical examiner's report, he died by suicide. 😔 INXS made really great music. 🤩

Man... how many times I've sung this one... so many times!!! Michael was so iconic I admit I was totally influenced by his style so much that I've made mine some of those elements for my style _{slender fit pants and long untuck designed shirt, just like he was used to be when Live At Wembley came out, just in a darker style due to the fact I started listened heavy metal back then already} back in mid 90s! Dunno how the people closer to me took that but never felt myself so cool like back then and my hair were even longer than his. Well... actually still are that longer! INXS wasn't only about music but about being true superstars, each album was accompanied by a renewed style. Honestly no other band has ever been like INXS from that point of view! Anyway... I would suggest their true masterpiece for me, "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts"!
