Turn on CC because I had a huge brainfart.
I never actually noticed how good Roberu is at keeping a conversation going until now. Dude can always talk. This would've been two separate videos but dude segways so cleanly that it feels wrong to split it. I already cut this video poorly enough as it is.

I think the winning son meme is about dads who's just trying to bond with his son, but not really understand much about what his son is playing. It's like 'dad trying to be hip' kind of meme?

Yes, that's basically it, cause parents (usually dad) don't really like a son that play a lot (that's normal though), basically it's a heartwarming meme about somewhere in this world, there is actually dad like that who actually try to know his son hobbies (usually playing games), so as long as it's game, win is basically the most great status for the son. It's more a stigmata about dad usually don't wanna know about the games that their kids played,,,, cause parents usually always have bad impression about games (which I can not blame them though), and that's why it's the meme try to tell that the dad try to get closer with his son. @@TheMattVis The original "are you winning son" meme was of a dad walking into his son's room, asking "are ya winning, son?" The son was playing an anime hentai game with a VR headset masturbating with a sex toy. It's why Iofi reacted the way she did. It gained traction again years later and has become a more general wholesome meme, but I think the widespread understanding of it is still generally the hentai one.

The original comes from an old movie (not super old, but not recent) in which the dad is disappointed in his son playing some nerdy game instead of doing something more cool and ambitious, and hopes that at least his son is winning at it. So it was more like "**disapproving sigh** are you (at least) winning, son?" I can't for the life of me remember the name of the movie that scene comes from though, and now if you search for it all you get is memes. And it was only a small, 5 second joke that had nothing to do with the rest of the story. But the dad wasn't trying to be "hip," he thought what his son was doing was embarrassing. He'd probably feel the same way if his son was watching vtubers.

It's also a cultural thing. In Japan if someone says you're good at something it's seen as very arrogant and off putting to agree even if you do, it's expected that you'd downplay your skill.

Plenty of vTubers do actually. Its just for some reason the person handling the hololive settings for the animations doesnt handle the mouth animations properly at all. They dog the settings for it every time and idk how.

This is a good example on how Japanese perceive jokes, sometimes they misunderstood and thinks it meant something negative. Just like he thinks he is a "son" but here it ended in a joke. But some stuff can get really serious that is why us foreign fans need to really watch our words around our favorite vtuber. Except for Coco she gets it

We know that it's a joke, but the artist don't know it because of language barrier.

Thing is, she can only speak Japanese(obviously). The note said: "Shine." But the lady interpreted it as "Shi-Ne" which if I call recall correctly meant "Die." Poor communication kills.

2:13 = An TL note and not just a cry for help. Iofi genuinely misremembers the word for "interest" and mixes it up with "hobby" since they sound similar in Japanese and the meanings are close enough as well. So it's not a freudian slip. She also happens to mispronounce "interest" as well. 3:14 - Roberu trails off pretty hard here, which is the reason why Iofi gets super confused. To prevent the screen being filled with ellipses and like three different slightly related thoughts, I put in that garbage instead. 3:25) Dialects and accents aren't actually interchangeable in a linguistic sense. Compare how Scots talk and pretty much how every other englishperson speak. That's a dialect. In reality though, nobody actually cares except language nerds. 5:38: Roberu actually says 微温 here but I felt using any of the any conventional definitions kind would make Roberu seem a lot more negative than he's saying. Not totally satisfied with what I went with either though.

3:25 Cockney accent and cockney dialect is a more easy way to describe it,... you can almost understand if one is speaking english with a cockney accent, but even if someone is speaking english with recieved pronunciation (proper english) but in a cockney dialect it is almost nigh intelligible unless you know atleast the memes behind it. It’s just like the internet slang, is almost a dialect, with Japanese vtubers trying hard to understand “are you winning, son?”, “FBI, open up”, “yeet” and “pog”.

Funny, my textbook also uses Scottish as an example. The sentence *You don’t know what you’re talking about* will generally “look” the same whether spoken with an American accent or a Scottish accent. Both speakers will be using forms associated with Standard English, but have different pronunciations. However, this next sentence - *Ye dinnae ken whit yer haverin’ aboot* - has the same meaning as the first, but has been written out in an approximation of what a person who speaks one dialect of Scottish English might say. There are differences in pronunciation (e.g. whit, aboot), but there are also examples of different vocabulary (e.g. ken, haverin’) and a different grammatical form (dinnae).

I don't think so, Coco has been living in Japan too long she probably isn't aware of all the new memes. Last Meme Review she didn't know about Filthy Frank's "it's time to stop." Which is prevalent in meme culture. She knows a lot, but VERY new and complex memes I don't think she'd be capable of explaining all the intricacies. I'm wondering she knows about Loss. If she does, she probably has a lot more knowledge that I give he credit for, but she doesn't she probably doesn't know anything but surface knowledge.

Yes and no. Iofi doesn't really know how to explain it, so she only does a 1:1 translation. The meme itself isn't really anything special. It just perpetuated from a comic and the phrase itself is catchy and ridiculous so people say it a lot.

The origins of the meme was something that would literally happen to people. A lot of times parents become very removed from the world of entertainment that their children inhabit, especially in the teenage years, but they still recognize games when they seem them. A good natured father that wants to check in on his son would ask him if he's winning, because he can obviously see that his son is playing a game, which usually has winners and losers. This cultural, cross generational saying has persisted in the western zeitgeist for so long that it finally became a comic that was extremely relatable to most people. I've personally had this happen to me three times by two different fathers while playing D&D and once while playing World of Warcraft.

Just remember that kanji ain't a race, you don't need to know all or even close to most of the 2400-ish main ones before being able to read stuff. They're like words, you'll 100% need a lot of them and should not neglect them, but if you focus on the common stuff and work from there, you'll be surprised how much text you'll be able to read before encountering the more specific ones you don't know yet.

If she can learn it from Anime alone, and taught every language to herself, she must be some kind of language prodigy/genius. 99% of people couldnt do it that way. Also most japanese people actually preach that you shouldnt learn from animes, because it is (in most cases) not he type of japanese you speak in the real world. So Im curious how she learned "normal" japanese from it.

People really overstate the don't learn from anime thing. It's mostly fine as long as you're very aware that everyone in anime speaks extremely casually or extremely formally and that they never adjust they way the speak according to the situation. Since if you're learning from anime, you're probably learning via phrase collection so things like intonation don't matter much. Also obviously don't like, exclusively watch overly chuuni or shounen-y stuff. But Iofi does admit in a different stream with someone else that she eventually switched over to watching medical dramas as her primary source of learning. Since there's a lot of vocab there to learn ontop of the more realistic intonation that normal actors have over seiyuu. And because dramas often reflect listening and responding to listening, which is something anime barely ever does despite it being a core part of Japanese.

I mean she even has no problem understanding dialect...which as far as I can tell, even some japanese people have trouble sometimes fully understanding. I wish I had that skill (of course she also put alot of effort in learning it, still...).

Where I live (Brazil), we speak portuguese, but a lot of people also know english, some also know spanish, I also learned a bit of japanese by watching anime and vtubers, in the end I'm fluent in English and portuguese, can read and understand spanish (speak a little) and also understand a little bit of japanese

@@ReneeKy Kanji is adapted from Chinese's Hanzhi, but while they're written the same, their usage can differ a lot. "我" means "I" in Chinese/Mandarin, but the Kanji "我" in Japanese Kanji is barely used outside ' 我々" or "我が" in Japanese, which are ancient forms of "we" and "I". In modern writing/conversation, it's not something you'll often see. Nowadays, Japanese uses "私 (watashi)” for "I", which in Chinese means "private" or "privately".

I'd say in general it's more of a lively, expressive somewhat gruffer way of speaking. I usually hear it compared to british Cockney or an American Southern accent. IIRC Osaka is rural and it's considered to be a less refined way of talking like a southern accent is in the US as well.

According to stereotypes: At best, they're folksy, lively & boisterous (as well as natural comedians if they're Osakan), and at worst, they're idiotic, crude hicks.
