A thorough review of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, after a year owning and driving 35,000 miles. What we like, what we have learned, and what could be better.
Here is a Video update on the warranty repair i discuss at 9min 15sec. They have fixed front under tray and have ordered new rear USB socket (socket went bad fuse was fine). Both fixed no cost under warranty. Rear air tray not covered due to damage, they want $350 for part, plus labor.

Finally somebody that drives the same as me. My use for this car would be 57 miles of highway each way, five times a week. And the occasional 400 mile each way road trip. I average 30k miles a year

Informative take on your car. Thanks. Your ineffective usb slot in the backseat is most likely just a bad fuse.

The battery preconditioning update became available for the 2022 AWD models earlier this year. It makes a significant difference with cold weather fast charging. It uses about 5 kw when on but only activates about 30 minutes before reaching your preset charging destination. Obviously it will decrease range some so you have to decide whether to prioritize range or charging speed. Preconditioning will not activate if your HV battery state of charge is below 20% or the battery temperature is above 68-70 degrees F.

I had heard about the update, but didn’t know all the conditions. I really appreciate the information, thank you. It’s unfortunate Hyundai did not put a bigger priority on battery warming, I assumed it was essential to modern EVs and was pretty shocked when I learned my Ioniq RWD did not have battery warming.

That's a lot of miles in a year! Interesting to see the how the car is doing with such heavy use. Chargers in Fairhaven Park! There is also one dual post above Taylor Dock. I saw two stalls for a charger at Cornwall Park but it wasn't installed as of two days ago. How many kws does the Ioniq pull from that level 2 charger? I hope they put them in all our parks.
@UpperWestEV
@UpperWestEV Жыл бұрын
Yes, neat to Bellingham installing these chargers at popular parks, and would be great to see them at more parks. I believe it was charging at about 6 1/2 kW. It’s been a great car over all.

Nice to see the car can charge reasonably well without pre-conditioning, but man it's so worth it if you can get it.

Yeah, it’s not bad, and I agree preconditioning would be nice! Now to get the software developers for the car and the chargers on the same page.

@user-ev6rj8rl5n yup. I'm optimistic charging will improve this year - if it doesn't tesla will wipe out all thr ccs brands and have a monopoly. I also have a Niro, which is slow charging anyway but preconditioning would make a big difference on it. I think it should be a standard part of any EV.
@superbear617
@superbear617 Жыл бұрын
@@benwinslow3101 The Niro has a heat pump, right? Does that help compared to none?
@benwinslow3101
@benwinslow3101 Жыл бұрын
@superbear617 the car heats up nicely, and it probably has better winter range because of it. I'm not an engineer so I don't know, but I think the components are there such that the Niro could pre-condition. There is a "winter mode" which is supposed to heat the battery in cold conditions....but I've charged it at 12F and driven at -1F and never seen that feature activate so it must be limited to really cold conditions.

Very helpful video. May I ask if the HDA1 will work in stop and go traffic?
@UpperWestEV
@UpperWestEV Жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you found the video helpful. The HDA1 does work in stop and go freeway traffic. I believe when the car comes to a full stop, you have to push a toggle on the steering wheel as traffic resumes motion.

New models now come with heat pump and battery reconditioning. This, for me, makes RWD all more compelling for a bit lower price.

Looks like a pretty honest evaluation which is always appreciated. The response from Hyundai about those covers on the underside coming loose is about what I expected from Hyundai. IMO, those covers being loose is a serious issue that should be resolved immediately not next time you stop by which, in the EV world, can be a year or more. I'd make sure you get something in writing pertaining to fixing this issue and please don't give up as you could have just made contact with a complete imbecile. One look at those charging issues is all I need to just give Hyundai a pass. I can only charge at public chargers and wouldn't want to depend on a company like EA. Looks like you haven't had software updates either. For the record, I'm two years into owning a M3 LR and I finally got a parking spot below my apartment so WiFi now reaches my car and updates get downloaded automatically. All I do is say yes to running the update. No more sitting on the dealers lot getting updates which was a pain. It's past 12am and I'm about to go get my car charged for 24 cents kwh. I won't have an issue and it will charge up pretty fast. I'm looking forward to what China adds to the market. They're scheduled for release in Europe this year. China has quite a few manufacturers and we should see some real differences between vehicles.

Hey, thanks for such a thoughtful comment. I’ve had one software update in a year, When I owned a tesla they seem to come one or two a month. Getting the repair in writing is a good idea this last time I called in, I asked them to put that in the notes of some thing I want it fixed. The service attendant said they wrote it down we shall see. I’m eyeballing the model three, there’s a lot to like!

@@UpperWestEV Generally, it goes up to 264 but for some reason it jumped to 273. Might be the recent software update making it more accurate or inaccurate, who knows. Regarding your interest in the 3, it's supposed to have some big changes which should be announced in Tesla's coming event.

adults on the backseats migt be pushing it? I have never seen so much backseat space in this segment of cars than the I5! If you are 6ft7 or above maybe an issue..

Would you buy another one? A 2023?
@UpperWestEV
@UpperWestEV 4 ай бұрын
I would, I really feel the ioniq 5 is a great car especially if you’re doing more regional driving with the occasional road trip. The reason I switched to the Tesla model 3 was because of the better charging network and better battery management for the type of travel I was doing, which was 600 to 900 miles a day.

So did you fix the underside ?
@UpperWestEV
@UpperWestEV Жыл бұрын
I remedied the front under panel temporarily, but I wouldn’t call it a fix. needs new pins from the dealer. They’re going to look at it at next service. The dealer didn’t want to repair the sagging back air damn. They wanted to charge me $350 for replacement and install of the same crappy part. I said no thanks.

@@UpperWestEV but this is under warranty ? What excuse for not honoring warranty ?
@UpperWestEV
@UpperWestEV Жыл бұрын
They said it appears one of the plastic pins on the back was damaged by hitting something and so they want me to pay for replacing of the whole thing. But one pin broken would not lead to the whole thing sagging. It’s poor design. I think it’s a classic case of dealers wanting to push cost to customers instead of Hyundai corporate as they get their money faster and probably charge more to the end-user.

The way the car calculates the rated range is a little wonky, it estimates what your range will be at a full charge based on your efficiency in the last few drives. So for instance, if you’ve done a lot of hill climbing and then you charge the car to full and the rated range calculation on the car shows 210 miles of rated range but on a highway journey you would still see about 255 miles of range.
