I run with a crew in NW Illinois, all we do is drive; supposedly this confuses most people as we don’t sit at all. We manage 15 properties with about 20 pushes. We average 28 deer between 10 guys through 4 weekends.

Great hunt, I used to live in upstate New York, and we hunted this way quite a bit, our part of the state was shotgun only, funny thing is now rifle is legal and there are less so-called hunting accidents. I noticed a couple stupid comments from some people saying that’s not real hunting and a substitute for lack of woods knowledge, if they don’t like it, they don’t have to hunt that way, I hunt both ways and the thing is deer drives are very productive. I enjoyed your video, thanks.

Years ago I got invited to a huge cull hunt in south Texas. This ranch had way too many deer. We were told to shoot every deer we could from our assigned spots. Was like 150+ killed. There were dozens of people cleaning and packaging the meat for hours after dark. We were told that probably wasn’t enough deer removed. This ranch was like 15 thousand acres and hadn’t been hunted in 20 years.

There's nothing wrong with driving deer like that that's a typical way to hunt in New York state if you have a group of people that works well the big problem is you have to be in an area where you don't have a whole bunch of other Hunters around because they will just harvest what you are pushing .You need to know where everybody is

Whoever was allowing all those deer to pass would never be in that position again in our drives. Actually he might not ever been allowed back out. All that hard work trying to get someone in that position and they just let them go. I agree with not shooting at every single deer, especially button bucks but come on dude. Unless you have a ton of button bucks and spikes, then it shouldn't hurt but help the herd. You don't want to shoot all your mature breeding Does and then allow an overpopulation of bucks either. I know I'll receive hate for this comment but I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought this same thing. It'd be really cool if you guys T.S.I'd the rest of the property as well and planted food trees. Preferably 🍎 & white oak where ya could. Guaranteed you'll increase your big buck ratio, especially with improved winter bedding. Good luck & God bless!

No that’s a great thought! One thing I didn’t mention is that the person above bobby is a newer hunter, this was her first year carrying a gun alone. He was expecting her to shoot more and let them go for her. She shot once but then her gun jammed. But then another point on why he didn’t shoot was that they were all .5-1.5 year olds. I guess I don’t agree with purposely shooting them. It will happen anyway on occasion but if you have a good look at them, can determine that they are young, let them grow, wait for a bigger one to walk by. Personally I’m proud of my brother and his decisions. We knew we’d see more deer and we actually got 4 out of that last drive which is a good number for a push I think. But regardless, you do have some good points though

@@HartungFamilyFarms You sit in stands and blinds to be selective. You drive deer to attempt to kill every deer you see. That many hunters should be able to kill four deer in one night's sit with careful selective shots. If the purpose is really to reduce the deep population, then size and sex don't factor into it.

When my family and friends would get together for a drive like these we would most often be doing it up in the hills and mountains of Oregon's Cascade Range to the east of the Willamette Valley. Because of the very steep terrain and huge tracts of timber and brush, we would often hang out extra "blockers/pushers" to fill in the gaps between pushers and the pushers would pick them up as they passed by. Our extra "blockers/pushers" we made, yes "made", by taking bars of Irish Spring bar soap, (the original scent/green striped bars works best), and cutting them into chunks then drilling a hole the chunks for a string or wire which we then used for tying to tree/brush branches. As we pushed the deer towards our human blockers, (which we often referred to as "standers", as in "you're on "stand", you're on "push"), they would try to escape past the "blockers" by going between them in the seemingly wide open gaps. Then they would get a whiff of our "Irish blockers", as we called them, and turn back into the funnel we had chosen for them and right out into the sights of our standers at the narrow end of the funnel. Worked fantastically! For some reason only the original green striped Irish Spring really worked well. With other soaps it was hit or miss. When the drilled blocks of soap begin to break apart save the pieces. Cut a square ⬜ out of the net bags that oranges come in and tie the broken pieces of Irish Spring into your homemade bag with a length of string or wire and they work just as well. Better even, as the Bright orange of the net bag make it easier to spot and quickly retrieve them in the bush. As the chunks and pieces of soap age just scrape a little off the surface of each piece to "renew" the smell. You can also wash yourself and your clothing with the soap as this is the one time you want the deer to smell you coming so that they break cover and head towards your men on stand. Effective, ethical, legal and lethal. Nearly every year those that participated in our friends and family drives got their deer and in those years when some didn't then those who were lucky enough to harvest a deer would each contribute to the unlucky few so that in the end every person on the drives got the same weight of venison per person at season's end. This tactic can even be used to turn a two man hunt into a multiple "person" drive. We would pick out a good sized draw or a little valley that looked promising for deer and hang the soap "blockers along both sides of and across the wide top of the draw and then one man would "stand at the narrow end with a good view of both sides and the center while the other man would push down through the draw towards the man on stand using a sweeping zig-zag walk back and forth and up and down both sides. The drawbacks to this type of two man drive is that the driver gets really worn out and the man on stand can legally only shoot his own deer and not one for the driver. This is fine when both are young, strong and healthy but really sucks if you are the young guy in a young/old duo because the old guy is always on stand and you are always humping it up and down those damn draws. Whoops, sorry, guess a little of the old resentment towards my logger father showed through there. I loved him and loved hunting with him but whenever HE decided that we were going to do a drive hunt I somehow always ended up doing the drive part while he was to old and decrepit to walk even though he spent all day walking when he was out logging. Oh, wait, now I get his point. 😉😁🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌shoot, shoot! Wow, did you see the size of that herd of deer? 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌!!!🧼🧼blocked by the 🧼🧼's. Hmm hard to see it but those are bars of soap w/lather. "Long🌬💨ed this is". says Yoda.

Deer drives are a necessity with high populations and tough habitat and rugged topography. Gun season is when we thin the daggone herd

I watch the tail. A doe will have the tail up and waving. I buck will have the tail down and a lot of the time the tail is between the back legs.

We go by whoever put the kill shot on it. Or in this case, who would’ve killed it first. Ted’s shot was a better shot and would’ve killed it quicker therefore it’s his

I believe more deer are harvested in drives than any other form unless you get to bait or have a huge population

I thought you said it was shotgun season? Are you hunting with a pump action rifle? That doesn’t seem legal. But I dont live in iowa so what do I know. Its illegal to drive deer in my state so we can’t do that. The deer population in our state is starting to get pretty high so maybe they will get rid of that law. I have a 8 point on camera that shows up at my house before hunting time hopefully he daylights before the end of the season.
