Today, I go out and participate in Iowa's 1st season shotgun season. Yes we are doing deer drives. That is okay if you do not agree with our practice but around here in eastern Iowa, a LOT of people hunting driving deer. It is a very efficient way of hunting deer and if done properly is very safe.

Hartung Family Farms is a farming operation out of Jackson and Clinton County Iowa, with our main farm located in Preston Iowa. We have around 2400 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa, rye, and oats as well as around 750 head of cattle. We have a wide range of International equipment from small tractors from the 1970s to newer large farm tractors!

Reminds me of my teenage years. We did drives (us young-uns) for the Hawkeyes ( Dads, Uncles and cousins). We usually had about 12 to 14 persons. Good times. That was back in the 1980's. Now, I feel I am the last of a dying breed. I hardly see anyone else hunting.

@@HartungFamilyFarms And productive! Everyone gets a cut from the deer that were killed. That's how we used to do it. The hawkeyes did the killing, the drivers pushed 'em out. It was simple. We had tags for all the deer. Fill the freezer was the goal.

Yes !!thanku Ron !! I’ve been patiently waiting for this years deer hunt with u An your group .. absolutley enjoy how you take us along on the hunt .. I’ve hunted since I was 15 up till 5 yrs ago now 50 yrs of age an my health will not let me go hunting as I’m very ill .. so watching your videos really makes me feel good An brings back a lot of good mememories .. please keep them coming ! I to use to hunt on my dads farm an was always very successful ..I miss hunting so badly but like I say I thanku very much for sharing your hunt with us as I feel like I am right there hunting with ya.. love the sound of the shots going off in the woods there is nothing like it an the Drenalin an excitement of getting one or even jus seeing them an also jus being out in the woods An nature at its best !! Great footage an videos of how you hunt an take us along .. thanks Ron !! An congrats to you An your group on 8 deer on that day wow good for you’s !! Love the scenery too !!

Look forward to your hunting videos. I was hoping you would share with us this year. Thank you Ron I know it isnt easy hunting while filming but i just love these. Not crazy about utube new rules but it is what it is I'm sure there's a reason. Nothing better then sitting out in the woods listening to the sounds of the forest creek running g birds etc.

Gongratulations on your deer harvest. Most people outside of Iowa think that it is flat. This video shows that it is not flat.

Ron , thank you for taking us along on the hunt . These deer should be good , they have been eating your corn and soybeans all year . Hunting has been a way of life for man since the beginning of time . This was an awesome video !

It's very good way to hunt I hunt in Northeast Iowa and we got 17 deer our first day

Like spicy said, in the terrain that we have, it is extremely difficult to harvest the number that is needed without pushing

@@HartungFamilyFarms definitely a great way to hunt. I'm not trying to make a case that it's ineffective. The terrain in central/southern Ohio is very similar to the terrain in your videos. On our family ground, multiple groups hunt during gun week therefore it being unnecessary to drive the first day of gun season. I also understand as farmers we have limited time to hunt and a deer drive gives you the best chance at tagging a deer. Congratulations on your buck Ron. Beautiful deer!

2:49 What the heck is that guy packing for heat. I just use a 12 gauge lol and brother uses a 4570 gov. We hunt around our farm in eastern iowa too. Good video!

.450 Bushmaster AR-15 with a Vortex 1-8 Strike Eagle. In Iowa, straight-walled pistol cartridges between .357" & .500" are allowed during shotgun season. Having the semi-automatic AR-15 platform helps with follow up shots, sight picturing, and reloading. Plus, when it's cold out, and you are wearing gloves or trying to keep your hands out of the cold, loading/unloading with a magazine is easier then loading/unloading shells one-by-one. Ballistics wise, the 450 BM is a faster and flatter round than a rifled slug by a decent amount. When comparing to a sabot, it is still flatter and faster but not as significantly. We have a couple guys in this group that use either 450 BM or a combination of 12 gauge and 450 BM (driving/blocking). It's a nice gun to have when covering fields or longer zones looking down into ravines/valleys that cover this area. I believe 3 of the 8 deer the group got that day were taken with a 450. I probably gave you more information than you wanted, but figured I would be thorough for those not in Iowa or familiar with Iowa laws.

iv bin driving deer for almost 50 years .all driver yell and the posted guys are quite.we get so many deers every year,we have guys trying to get into our drives,were that good

8 the first day ...good 👍 job .... Farmers like hunting parties that take doe ...the whole purpose of opening their land to most hunters is to have an impact on deer numbers and prevention of crop damage / losses . Thanks for your efforts , enjoyed the video !

I'm sorry but I'm not really sure how you consider this "hunting"... Shooting a running deer that has been kicked up by someone isn't hunting and definitely not a sport.. Love your farming content but this not so much. Just my opinion and I understand yours is different.

@@Fella_Outdoors I don't consider it a sport or hunting. Scaring animals in a direction to be shot is slaughtering not hunting. This is just my opinion. I understand others differ.
