WILL IT START!? 1950s Caterpillar Dozer BARN FIND!
There has been a 1950's Caterpillar D6 cable dozer tucked back in the barn for YEARs and today we give it some attention to see if we can get not one, but TWO engines going. The pony motor needs to start so we can get this piece of American Engineering up and running and hopefully some day soon - push some dirt with it!

I'm 73 and so I saw the worldwide oil conspiracy . It went from mainly gas station owner leasee's to corp. owned stations and foreign money takers . Gasoline went from .28 cents a gal. .36 . A huge jump in '73 !!! Gas rangeed from 85 oct. to 101 with chevron's " white pump " custom supreme !!! Leaded gas !!! Our whole world changed forever 😢

Wrong! you put it on compression to warm the combustion area in the diesel with the fuel OFF, then after it has warmed up then open the throttle.

You want to turn off the petrol/gas and NOT turn off the magneto to empty the pony carb to stop the gas diluting the pony oil, and ruining the pony main bearings....

I know just how you feel about that nasty 🤮 smell 👃. A friend of mine shot a skunk 🦨 and it sprayed all up in the air and I just Lost my cookie’s. And I hadn’t had anything to eat yet. My body kept heaven over and over again puking 🤮 and nothing coming out of me. I just thought I’d let you know it was definitely not pleasant just like you’re going through.

Old gal sounds fairly good, motor isn't crackling or making uncharacteristic noises and no excess white, blue or black smoke, I've seen worse undercarriage plus steering clutches, brakes, and cable blade system working awesome video fellows u have a solid keeper in that old D6,l ran a real old D8 when I was a young buck ,the pup was buggered so I'd have a big front end loader push me backwards while lifting the blade slightly, that big Cat motor would fire right up every time (engine was rebuilt so fairly tight)The power steering on it was excellent lol,Cheers gentlemen, thanks

If you ever need any great advice on any of the mechanics on it go ask Squatch253, he is big enthusiast of early generation CAT tractors. There is also A.C.M.O.C. (Antique Caterpillar Machine Operators Club) that you can go for advise and sourcing parts which are increasingly becoming hard to obtain.

Noticed Steve didn't say anything when he cleaned the bowl without any problem. Did he tell you to grow a pair? 😀

A couple more points on the benefit of a pony motor. You correctly said that it heats the inlet manifold with the exhaust, but that is just to help the engine to fire in the cold. The pony also shares the water with the main engine so it will heat the main block after a time. The pony can have a two speed gear and the low gear can be used when the block is so cold that the oil is too thick for normal starting, perhaps in the Arctic. When warm then change to high gear.

Great times! I ran a D~7 (3T) back in the early 80s . A couple of pointers. Try not to ride the steering brake until the steering clutch is engaged. The cable blade has no down pressure, so you might want to start off using the blade in some loose or soft material ,try not to get slack in the cable as it will snap the

That was nice of Steve to help you get it going, he seemed to really enjoy it also. Good to see a young guy get some old iron rolling. Used to drive one of those when it was -30 with what they call an Heater Houser that would contain the hot air off the engine and blow back towards you to help keep you from freezing. It was by no means warm but at least you didn't turn into a popsicle.

I feel your pain with the mice. It's rare to find a machine as complete as this one and in such nice condition. Steve is a handy friend to have. Thanks for the video.
