In this movie reaction we are watching Ip Man 2 (2010) for the first time ever!! We both can't believe we have never seen this movie/franchise before. In this film inspired by a true story, Wing Chun martial arts master Ip Man (Donnie Yen) and his family are moving from Foshan, China, to Hong Kong, where Ip aspires to create a school so that he may teach his fighting techniques to a new generation. However, he finds resistance from an asthmatic Hung Ga master named Hong Zhen Nan (Sammo Hung). Soon, Ip is drawn into a treacherous world of corruption as well as a fateful showdown with a merciless boxer known as the Twister (Darren Shahlavi).

Fun fact: The movie simplified things a bit to make the storytelling easier. Ip Man didn't have one First Pupil getting into trouble, fighting students from other schools, he had four. These four pupils are important in Wing Chun lore because they're the ones who ended up teaching most of the time. Ip Man would teach/demo a technique for the whole class, and these four students would be the ones closely monitoring you. One of these four students is the one who taught Bruce Lee. Obviously, these four students became Masters, and nowadays, if you go to a Wing Chun anywhere in the world, whether it's Germany, The US of A, or Mexico (hi!) they will tell you "Sifu X studied with Sifu Y, who studied with (one of the four original students.)" Wing Chun schools are proud of their lineage.

Oh wow that does gves credibility to the teachings and technics of the art between both teacher and student, just like how people in the past used to learn their martial arts from. They would always seek the best teacher, who was taught by another great teacher and so on. Good to hear that Wing Chun martial art preserved that tradition.
@GeneralLiuofBoston1911

I feel like that proud lineage exists in any martial arts style, regardless if Wing Chun or not. Some may not have that feeling of pride (I kind of noticed this with the more generalized martial arts schools. Like if you take general classes for martial arts like Karate, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, or Judo and it isn't a specific style (or gym training style), than I don't think they'll have some kind of serious lineage. Maybe a founder of the school (like in the school's name of X School of Muay Thai or Y's Kung Fu Society), but at least in my personal experience in different martial arts forms, some are and some aren't and you can kind of feel how good a class might be based off of the way things are taught and the discipline and seriousness for a class. Or I might just be completely nuts at 2am.

Sammo Hung is an absolute legend. He trained at the same Chinese Opera School as Jackie Chan and somehow when he put on weight he lost none of his martial arts ability. He not only gave some absolutely dazzling martial arts scenes in a whole slew of films, but also fought against Bruce Lee at the start of _Enter the Dragon_ and also became adept at fight choreography (he choreographed the action in this film and its predecessor) and directing. There are so many classic Sammo films out there. One of *my* favourites of his (which is also deemed by many to be his finest directorial achievement) is _Eastern Condors._

There's a bit of wonky translations in the subtitles. When Ip Man suggested to Master Hung to "attack the ribs", what he is actually suggesting is to attack the "Center Line". The Center Line theory is a fundamental precept of Wing Chun Kung Fu. The idea is that an attack straight down the center will always connect first compared to a loop/hook/swinging punch. Master Hung replies to Ip Man that it's easier said than done. During Ip Man's fight with Twister, he too realizes that Wing Chun's theory is good and all, but often in practice, there are plenty of factors against a strong and skilled opponent that makes it not entirely practical. Ip Man often strikes Twister first, but Twister is still able to follow through and trade blows with Ip Man, making it disadvantageous for the Wing Chun fighter, because Boxing's straights and hooks are simply more powerful than Wing Chun's centerline short straight punches. Ip Man realizes that Master Hung was in fact correct, and adjusted his fighting methods, taking a page out of Master Hung's Hung Gar Kung Fu. One of the moves Hung Gar is most famous for, is it's Tiger Claws which targets an opponent's limbs in order to disable them. Ip Man doesn't necessarily use that move, but he does adopt it's principles and attacks Twister's arms, taking the power out of it, before using another of Hung Gar's signature moves, the High-Low Double Fist (no idea what the actual name is, but you get which move that is). This is kind of part of a subtle subplot. In the original Ip Man, his Wing Chun is invincible. But in Ip Man 2, he has to learn to break out of the dogma of his own Kung Fu in order to beat his opponent. That's why they chose this movie to introduce Bruce Lee. While Ip Man was purely a Kung Fu fighter, the idea that adapting the strengths of other Martial Arts styles to your own that made Bruce Lee so famous, was seeded by Ip Man (and his best student instructor, Wong Shun Leung who personally tutored Bruce Lee in Ip Man's stead)

Yep.... I can see where Bruce Lee's foundation came from. What a lot of people don't know - is that Bruce did quit a bit of cross-training. He did grappling (even though it's not portrayed in his films because of what was popular cinema at the time), and even augmented western boxing (which is shown in much of his footwork).

In the very first fight (where Leung fights Ip Man to see if he wants to become a student), Ip Man WAS holding back, but in the first skirmish he also simulated several finishing strikes. Leung was too inexperienced to understand that, which is why Ip Man looked confused when Leung said “you haven’t beaten me yet”. That’s when Ip Man decided to stop feigning the strikes.

When it comes to martial arts, you can divide it into two groups... sport and true combat. The different styles within those two groups are no better or worse than those within the respective group. Each was developed to accomplish a certain task, that was appropriate for the time and place it was developed. While the two groups are similar, they are different, but people tend to blur the division between the two and thus try to compare apples and oranges. Boxing on its own is an exciting sport and its punches can be extremely devastating, but it cannot compete with a martial art developed specifically for battle. When I was taught close quarters/hand-to-hand combat in the army, the instructor had told us that a true martial art does not focus on style or form, but the ability to adapt techniques in an ever-changing environment. A true martial artist does not drag out a confrontation, but endeavors to end it as quickly as possible (if that means fighting dirty, then so be it). If there is any confusion, just look at the intent. Is it to score points or to incapacitate/kill?

I also like how Ip Man as a series aims for a varied conflict. Like the first was a nationalist fervor to defend Foshan from the Japanese. The second being defense of the honor of Chinese martial arts. The third understanding throwing fits isn't always the answer and the importance of family and time with them. The fourth being how racism and social change must be accepted that it can't always happen, nor can change everyone's minds (although in some ways it can - the contrast between the San Francisco Kung Fu Masters, Bruce Lee's sideplot in the film, and Chinese martial arts' place in the American military.

If you can find the first UFC fights, they actually pitted fighters from differing fighting styles against each other. Like Kung Fu vs Wrestling, and Boxing vs Karate. After a few years, Royce Gracie's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu became so dominate that other fighters started practicing it just so they could learn to counter him. This eventually led to all the fighting styles overlapping and blending into one; MMA. Oh yeah, they also fought tournament bracket style, fighting several people in one night.

I love their reaction and comments based on their American ideology when watching Chinese films. Their jaws dropped when Twister yelled out "yellow piece of fat out of here" ... I laughed so hard. And them not knowing who Samo Hung is with their cute comment. Love it. They are like a fresh set of eyes on culture that is already familiar to me.

The big guy is Sammo Hung, one of the guys who came up with Jackie Chan (and was often a protagonist along with Jackie in their films). He's quite underrated in the west... but what's so impressive about him is how amazingly agile/speedy he is for being on the larger size. The guy is incredibly skilled

The overweight master is actually famous martial artist, choreographer and film director/actor Sammo Hung, he's just as iconic as Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, in fact he's fought them all in a few films! I was introduced to him when he was the main character in a tv show in the 90's called "Martial Law".

Sammo Hung is a goddamn legend. "THE FAT DRAGON". Hes a beast. He and Jackie Chan (and Yeun Baio, another legend) were taught at the same Peking Opera school.. which was like dance school crossed with the marine corps.. but for kids. And you were an indentured servant. Sammo is one of the best fight choreographers and directors in the biz. "Spooky Encounters", "Eastern Condors", "My Lucky Stars", "Magnificant Butcher", "Prodigal Son", "Pedicab Driver", and "Warriors Two" are all great Sammo flix

Hey guys! Love what your doing here! I just watched your both Ip Man reactions along with The Raid. I have tons of recommendations since I've watched many martial arts movies and especially starring Ip Mans Donnie Yen who has made many incredible interpretations of martial arts stories. I would really love for you guys to react to "Dragon Tiger Gate" which is a crazy martials movie based off a Chinese comic and ofcourse starring ip man/Donnie Yen as one of the main characters. Im sure youll love it. Also you guys should check out Jet Li's "Fist of Legend" which has drama with China and Japan along with incredible martial arts annnd check out Jet Li's "Fearless" which has an incredible storyline martial arts n emotions. Keep doing what you guys are doing, I love it! ❤🍾

If you're looking for another Martial Arts Epic that's based around a real life person, I HIGHLY suggest Jet Li's Fearless. Great martial arts, story, acting, set design and atmosphere, along with some moments of philosophy. Truiy worth the watch. Of course I still think you two should watch the other 2 parts of this Ip Man series as well.

9:27 Well, that 'unfit' master is Sammo Hung, who is a legend in kung fu movies, going back to the 70's. Sammo is a childhood friend of Jackie Chan. He, Jackie and a guy, Yeun Biao, were known as THE 'Kung Fu Trio' because of their IRL friendship, on screen chemistry and they made great movies that combined comedy and great fight scenes. Folks always see Sammo as this out of shape guy, but he is quick and agile with the best of them. If ya'll go down that kung fu rabbit hole you will see him a lot.

When you guys get to Jet Li, you gotta check out 'Fist of Legend' and the 'Once Upon a Time in China' films (Donnie Yen stars alongside Li in no. 2). Two modern day classics that were childhood favorites of mine, with great stories. For his more recent films, I highly recommend 'Hero', 'Unleashed' and 'Fearless'. Donnie Yen's best for me is the Ip Man series, but if you want to check out another recent entry of his that is VERY badass, check out 'Flash Point'. I think y'all will enjoy any and all of those films. Edit: Oh and FYI, that practice dummy for Wing Chun is known as a Wing Chun dummy. Great for practicing the simultaneous block/attack combinations in Wing Chun.

The fat master, Samu Hung, is a legend in martial arts movies since the 70s. Watch his movies pretty much all my life. There were amazing. Sadly, he can no long walk anymore. He's now in a wheel chair...maybe for life. All those decades abusing his body finally caught up to him. Very sad end for a legend.

Can't believe people no longer react to Sammo Hung. For me and my brother, he's almost as popular as Jackie Chan because they've starred in so many movies together, we both yelled out when we saw him walk in. He will always be the chubby sidekick who can somehow move so well despite his size. He's older now though. But if you know who he is, you know there's no way he's playing some pushover character.

Fun Fact: Sammo Hung told Darren Shalavi to punch him hard in the face during the filming of the ring fight. Darren did so, and knocked Sammo out. After waking up, Sammo went back to filming straightaway. The legend that is Sammo. He also walked away laughing as Sammo thought he would be able to jump further away from the fist, but that did not happen, because well, old age.

The Five Deadly Venoms ( An all time classic. AWESOME story and truly original.) 8 Diagram Pole Fighter (Great story and out of this world fight choreography) The Victim (Excellent, excellent story and great fight scenes!) Heroes Of Shaolin aka Heroes of The Wild (One of the best stories I've ever seen in a martial arts film) I could recommend many more but this is good start.

Master Hung (the big guy from the boxing match) is Sammo Hung, a good friend of Jackie Chan's, they made movies in the 70s and 80s. The movie takes place during the British occupation of Hong-Kong, RUSH HOUR 1 begins at the last day of said occupation (if you remember).

When it comes to martial arts films, one of the most appealing aspects is the variety of influences that are present: real-life combat forms like hang gar and wing chun kung fu, circus abilities such as wirework and trampolining, to mention a few examples. However, Peking opera - or, more precisely, Chinese opera - has unquestionably had the greatest influence on martial arts as they are depicted on screen, with choreography for martial arts films drawing from a variety of regional Chinese opera genres. Sammo Hung was in the Chinese Opera academy at the same time with Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao. As Sammo was a bit older, Jackie and Yuen considered Sammo as their big brother and Sammo was keeping a very strict discipline in the academy
