Your video gave me the nerve to go ahead and replace the battery in my iPad Air 2. I found trying to replace the 4 tiny screws pretty difficult. Of course it doesn’t help that I’m in my 70s and don’t see as well as I before. Tips on replacing the screws would be helpful. Thanks for producing this most informative video.

One should never fall back on "advancing age" as an excuse to not try or learn something new ;) I'm proud of you, Bill! If we are talking about the same screws (on the shielding plates), I gently placed them with fingertips before screwing them down. Let me know how your iPad Air 2 turns out!!!

Vestigial Voice oh yes, it is working great. I’ve been a ham radio operator for 53 years. No self respecting ham wouldn’t give a repair a try. It beats buying a new iPad. I’ve realized that need to buy some of the lighted magnifying glasses so I see the very small parts in modern equipment.

The screwdriver should be magnetic, so the screw can be put on its tip, before approaching the screw hole. Then I recommend to turn the screws counter clockwise first, until it drops into the exiting thread, and then tighten it down carefully. If the screwdriver isn’t magnetic by itself, a small magnet on the shaft may work, too.

The iPad works amazingly the box came a little dirty, kzfaq.infoUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA no plastic wrap, but the box was sealed and had everything else in the box along with the wrapping, the iPad itself is gorgeous, I got the yellow 64g game storage is good for me along with Socials and school stuff. No scratches or marks came with the charger and box fast speed, and if you are buying a pen get the 1st gen don’t make the mistake I did !!

I followed your instruction to replace the battery for my iPad Air 2. Two areas I found most challenging are: (1) Opening the case - it was difficult to do the initial insertion, not knowing how much I needed to warm it up. I tried a few times with my hair dryer which did not work at all. I finally got the nerve to use the heat gun at medium heat, which worked wonders (I heated it for about 1 1/2 - 2min with heat gun on the edge of the iPad but kept it constantly moving). Once I was able to insert a pry tool, the rest became really easy. (2) Get the small plug of the new battery inserted into place - this was so difficult. At one point I thought I was going to break something - I had to stop and came after a few minutes to refocus. But you tip of lifting the mother board and getting a small screwdriver behind the battery helped. It was a big relief when I was able to put the small screw in, confirming the battery contacts are aligned. Thank you for the great video, it was enormously helpful.

Thanks for the video. Repair-shop didn't even want to replace the battery on my air 2, since they noticed that the charging-port was flaky. Got my own battery for 1/4th the price and replaced it after watching your video. I heated the motherboard-section to make it easier to insert the battery over the pillar.

Just busted my brother's original Apple screen attempting this, frustratingly during step 1. I used an actual heat gun and applied lots of heat. I've done several iphones/ipads so I am not new to this. Now, it's a bigger problem than if he had just taken it to a professional in the first place. I wish I never even started on this. To anybody reading this that hasn't began yet, take a moment to consider the deeper hole you may find yourself in if something goes wrong compared to just letting a shop do it to begin with. Not just financial loss, but time and frustration as well. You might be ruining a perfectly good screen and having to deal with the fingerprint button and whatever else collateral damage that might manifest.

Great video! Short and sweet, with none of the excessive verbiage that most video makers seem to feel compelled to include. I still need help though. I got the old battery out, new battery in. It started charging, but only went up to about 70%, and the iPad keeps spontaneously stopping and rebooting. The one problem I had was that I broke the single battery connector. The plastic under the metal shield broke. I put as much of it back as I could, but only about half of it. Some of the gold contacts were still visible, so I "insulated" them with a piece of packing tape. The screw would no longer "bite" that little mounting post, so I again resorted to packing tape using a longer piece to hold the connector down. Any help would be appreciated.
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I think you've pinpointed the problem area. The iPad relies on that screw to maintain contact with the battery and your tape doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I've never broken or encountered a broken device in quite that fashion. I couple spitball-type ideas: 1. Has it become a "depth" problem that we could use a slightly longer or larger bore screw to secure the battery? 2. I'd take a closer look at the area, but perhaps we could strategically place a small glob of hot glue in between. Emphasis on SMALL, because we are trying to avoid that gap that is giving us the trouble in the first place. 3. Could we place something underneath the battery (between the rear case and battery) to apply additional pressure in an effort to improve the connection? Let me know what you come up with, my friend, good luck 🍀

I can report success, too. Removed the display mostly with heat and some drops of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Using IPA I could remove the original battery easily with only minor deformations and no heat at all. I also drained the old battery down until the pad turned itself off, before opening it up. I then heated up the logic board part of the case and used a black nylon stick under the battery to lift the board up near the connector by putting it under it and twist it a bit. The same way the new battery went in in a few seconds. There is absolutely no need to remove any other components like other instructions show. The worst part was cleaning up the rest of the glue. In hindsight I recommend NOT to use IPA for the display, only for the battery and cleaning up. The IPA dissolves the glue easily but only for a short time, after it dissipates the glue becomes sticky again.

Thanks so much for the video, it was a life saver. Definitely some heat to remove screen and battery. Hardest part was to disconnect old battery and reconnect the new one. People really have to take a close look and understand how the battery connector is latch in place. DO NOT FORCE removal or installation of battery connector. The mother NEEDS to be propped up slightly to make space for the battery connector to slide between the top of the positioning pin and the motherboard.

Lastly, once I did get the screw back in, not with ease, I got the ribbon reattached and the power does not come on. Suggestions are welcomed.

I use an electric pancake griddle, set to 100 deg C with an infrared temperature gun (from Harbor Freight or online). Lay the display, face down for 2 min. Pick it up with gloves to protect your hands and place it on a towel on your bench. Begin with a thin razor blade or a stainless steel spudging tool to carefully, and slowly, raise the first corner. The lower right, below the home button is the area with least likelihood of hitting an internal component. The frame edge that holds the display, where the adhesive resides, is only 1/8 inch (3mm) wide, so do not go deeper under the display, thus preventing contact with internal flex circuits and components. After getting the first edge up, slide the thin spudger along the bottom, placing playing cards, old credit cards, or thin pieces of plastic behind it as you go, to prevent the warm adhesive from coming back together. Carefully, and SLOWLY, work you way all the way around the perimeter, finally lifting the display gently free. Do NOT torque the display AT ALL!! The bending moment will cause the front glass or the LCD under it to fracture. To help remove the battery, use larger "plastic" scrapers found at the paint store, to help get all the way under the battery, once the login board side and the battery connector are loose and ready to come away. It is critical that the new battery's contacts are in alignment with the logic board as it is slid underneath. To help prevent damage and shorting, cut a small plastic square with a notch for the cover screw, and place that over the battery contacts as it is slid into place, and jockeyed into position, perfectly aligning the screw hole. Once the battery adhesive is securely in place, remove the little contact protector and apply the cover with the screw. As soon as the contacts meet the logic board on its backside, the battery becomes active, powering parts of the logic board and the charging circuit. Caution: Always treat the battery as a high energy source that can overheat and possibly catch fire or explode if the gold contacts are shorted. Hope this helps. - Dan

There is an outer adhesive strip that keeps the screen in place. I like to reuse it, but if you destroy it while opening, they can be purchased online for cheap.

Do you just place the screen back onto the used glue or do you have to clean the edges of old glue and buy some sort of a "replacement gasket" and apply that before you put it back together?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice Жыл бұрын
Typically, I simply staighten and realign the old strips. It works fine if you use an iPad cover case. The alternative is to peel the old strips off and apply a new set. I've noticed that the screen lies a bit more flush that way. These adhesive strip kits are very reasonable and available on eBay. Have a great week, bud! 🍀

Hi Jerry, I get asked this question a lot... You can purchase a new set of adhesive strips--there are loads of inexpensive sets available on eBay. I simply warm the original adhesive stripping before laying the screen down. Thank you for visiting the channel! 👏

Hi sir Could you use a hair dryer to heat the surrounding?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice Жыл бұрын
Some viewers have reported success using a hair dryer. I discourage it for these reasons: 1. If you are unable to sufficiently heat the surrounding adhesive enough before prying, you run the risk of damaging the screen. 2. Budget heat guns are under $20 and highly versatile for all sorts of projects. It's worth the nominal cost to purchase an effect tool for the job. Thanks for the comment, requin.

Hi, what about the process for "attaching the screen" back on in its casing? does it need some sort of glue? or can just put pressure on it, and it will stick back together? also same with the battery? do we need to put some thermal paste on the battery? TY in advance
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 4 жыл бұрын
Darky, thank you for the comment, brother. -Regarding the screen, as long as you didn't peel off the adhesive strip, a bit of mellow heat will restore the stickiness and allow you to press it back together. I always use an iPad case and that acts as an additional binder to keep it tight (see earlier comment, in the even you ripped off all the adhesive stripping). -There will be some residual glue on the iPad's rear inner-shell to hold the battery down, thus, in my experience, it has never required additional agents to stay in place. I hope you find this video helpful.

This video resulted in the destruction of my iPad Air 2. On mine, the LCD was fastened by a screw in each corner and could only be removed after removing the touch screen first. Following these instructions led to ripping the ribbon off from the home button as well as the touch screen, which were on the right side, not the bottom. Apparently there are two very different ways to disassemble these. I have a brand new battery and installation kit, but my ipad is in the garbage can.

Thank you for taking the time to carefully construct this comment, frenchy. I can tell you are not a troll. Your sincerity is evident and your frustration is relatable to many of us here. In fact, it is one of the reasons I donate countless hours toward this channel. This is an important topic that often gets ignored. Any repair job, not unlike surgery, carries some risk of complications. Unfortunately, frenchy, you were the "complication" this time :( but, But, BUT! "Adversity introduces a man to himself." -Albert Einstein Allow us all to learn from this. I'm guessing you aren't willing to put together a video of your own, but perhaps you will kindly tell us exactly which model number you have. Truthfully, that sounds a bit more like the original iPad Air, but I'm excited to hear back from you. FYI: If it is just a torn ribbon cable, you can probably still fix it ;) Thank you again for the comment, french.

Lease I'm traying to change both cells dryed for another two new. Is very confused the (+ and -) mark on the original battery. From top the battery have ( + -) marks, but from the bottom are inverted... I need to know the + , - polarity of the power connector. In a view from "above" (camera in the left of the image) (charging port at the right of the screen) the order is positive-negative from left to right or the other way around? I think in the top label the polarity indicated matches with the conector's polarity, and from bottom of the battery the polarity marks refers to the cell´s polarity, is it correct?
@VestigialVoice
@VestigialVoice 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcelo, sounds like you are doing some advanced business over there! Is it that much cheaper to swap cells or are you doing this as a challenge? I believe you have the right idea... The best way to check for positive and negative terminals is using a multimeter. Even if the cell is almost depleted, you can detect polarity. I'm interested to see how your project turns out, please film and post it on youtube, my friend!!!!!

The $15 generic eBay batteries work pretty well (especially compared to a dying apple battery), but I have never gotten the performance out of a generic battery that touches the capability of a genuine apple product. Personally, I put a $40 value on the genuine apple batteries for our family's devices. If I cannot find them at that price-point, we go the generic route and it works out quite well. Lol, does that answer your question?
