Awesome video, really clear and concise. I am currently trying to install and 8 camera IP system to my RV but the cameras only take 12v a opposed to 48v. The NVR supplies POE which his is good I need to run as fewer cable as possible which his why your other video about 2 IP cameras on a single cable is very interesting.

I bought a Sance NVR system last year with 4 ip cams, but the wifi keeps going out so I wanted to move to ethernet and a switch since the cams all have optional ports. I may even ditch the NVR and use a dedicated computer with ip cam software. If the new Raspberry Pi 4 is powerful enough I can make my own NVR. This video was very helpful, thanks.

Hi, I wish I’d seen this video and your forum before I bought my cameras. Anyway, we’re here now. So my setup is everything that comes in the box (four 3mp ip cameras) from Hiseeu(more like the Zosi one), I already have a wireless modem at home, so it’s connected to the nvr, but the problem is “power and cabling” because I noticed the wireless signal wasn’t reaching parts of the premises where cameras 2 and 4 got installed. So I went ahead and got an 8 ports POE switch(also, without thinking it through). Initially, I thought using cat5e cables connecting the cameras to the poe switch while the Poe is connected to the nvr should power on the camera(but it doesn’t). Now I have to run electricity separately to the locations of the cameras to power them… should I now go get a splitter or an injector (an active or passive) in order to power the cameras with just the rj45 cabling.? Ps: poe switch has 10 rj45 ports(2 for uplink), it supports 30W max per each port. it also Complies with IEEE802.3af/at standard(I’m guessing that makes it an active poe). While the cameras are powered with a 12V 1A adapter. NVR has just one LAN port (which is where my poe switch is plugged into)

It seems that even Active PoE isn't 100% safe. I've managed to damage the serial console port of a cisco 2960G by patching it to a PoE HP procurve switch :). The RS232 to TTL chip released some magic smoke. The Juniper EX2200-C is also a great soho switch if you need fanless (!), gigabit (14 ports), poe (12 ports) and an awesome CLI for management.

This is a design bug in the switch. It should have used RJ11 instead. Yeah, I know, network gear weirdos use RJ45 for everything, because it is so common to have sockets, plugs and crimps already when working with this stuff, and the cables are somehow easier to unplug for RJ45 than RJ11.

From a professional standpoint when I deploy a IP Camera system I use a NVR to host/manage the IP Camera network. Not to mention it can record the video and so forth since 99% of my customer base are not "savy" in the tech world and they want to view their Cameras from their smart phones, tablet or directly to a TV with out having to push/swipe a crap load of buttons/options. You can buy NVRs that have built in POE switches, just like analog DVRs you can buy 4port, 8port, 16port and etc. Keep in mind these type of NVRs are Passive POE except for the port that is labeled LAN that is either 100mbit or 1000mbit.

Clayton, interesting this is the route that I have taken, using a 16 Chanel NVR! However, I am having image issues. Some channels show while others won’t even come on. Yet receive message regarding “time lapse has run out” . Do you have a clue what this means or does it go back to extra power being warranted via an additional POE. Mind you, only 9 channels are used out of the 16 channel POE NVR UNIT, so saturation shouldn’t be a concern.

So you don’t need both. Either injector or switch. Injector for less cameras, active is safer than passive. I am trying to connect one POE camera to a mobile router/modem and am trying to figure out what I need. Do any of the router/ modems have injectors or switches within them? From my understanding, an active injector would be best in my situation if such a router does not exist.

Not really POE is rated for 100 meters over CAT5e and up. But going CAT6 right now is probably best. If you want anything 10Gbit I would recommend CAT6A but that's total overkill for a camera. Also the newly introduced 2.5Gbit and 5Gbit will be more used in newer devices then 10Gbit so you are good with CAT6.

Before I started using IP cams I was using AV composite cams with a AV switch box. They were old large black and white metal prison cams I got at a discount. It limited me to only seeing 1 at a time. Then a power surge hit one of the cams, sending electrical feedback to the switch box and it shorted out every cam as well as the CRT. I had to move on to newer tech... lol

I don't know of any you can use directly outside. But check out my "2 cameras using a single cable" video, there I show multiple ways how to do that, including some switches which accept POE in and then have multiple POE output ports. You would need to build them inside of an outdoor enclosure though.

OK self taught camera girl here so go easy on me please. I have been using and have used in the past 10 years just basic infrared wired cameras. I have always used cat 5E Poe. In the past my cameras needed to be mobile and I have used passive audio/video/power baluns. Because of the portability, lightweight status and transport packing simplicity, I found that the baluns were the easiest to use. I am currently in the process now of setting up a home security system with DVR and 8 cameras. I am basically using the same process that I did for the mobile but am wondering about these switches. My closet that holds the dvr and such is a mess. It's a cable OCD nightmare. My question is can I use one of the passive switches on the DVR end and still use the other existing smaller baluns at camera site? Clearly there not the same make and model and I am wondering if they would work together regardless. Clearly they're not the same make and model and I am wondering if they would work together regardless.

When I tried to connect a non POE camera to a active POE switch it's not working , even I tried powering the camera by a external power adapter the POE port of switch still remains in the sleep mode .. no data no power . I think the camera should draw power from the POE switch (using active POE splitter) to make the port (data ) activated.

The network switch won't be 12v but 48v. Normally each port can serve up to 15w or 25w depending on the standard used. The 12v 1A is only a generic figure for when using the cameras with an adapter, not the actual usage. Most cameras will only use around 6w top.

If you are budget conscience and will be using lots of cameras, POE phones, etc you might check out eBay for used Enterasys C3G124-24P (24 port) or C3G124-48P (48 port) switches. It seems like they are somewhere around $50-100 in general. I have been using 4 of these at work (along with several spares) for a couple of years with around 25 cameras, 15 phones plus computers and printers. Just make sure that they show the proper P/N in their pictures. I have seen several listings (and bought...) with the proper P/N in the title and description but the P/N was without the P on the end and therefore NOT POE. They are fairly noisy so not ideal for a normal home system.

Often POE switches will have Non-POE ports but as long as they are both active POE devices it should always work with each other and not cause a problem. With passive POE devices (no negotiation just puts power on the pins) that could cause an issue!

You need to give proper information before someone can try to help you . The exact model of the camera and the NVR ( i am assuming you do not have a POE switch right now). If your cctv system is not IP (cameras), but analogue, you will have to get another wire (analogue cable) from the DVR to the (new) camera ( a separate power supply will have to be given for this new camera).POE switches can only be used with IP cameras. Assuming you have an IP camera/NVR (is your nvr poe or non-poe?) and you want only 1 more camera, it may be cheaper to run a cat5e cable from the nvr to the new camera (rather than investing in a poe switch, which costs above Rs.4K in India).

Very informative video. However, I am surprised you didn't mention how to run two POE cameras off one cable. I do this for corners of my home that will have two cameras. Since these cameras only have 100Mb connections, you don't need all 4 pairs/8 wires. I just made a splitter for the camera end and then punched down into two different jacks on my patch panel ( type B on both ends ). I went with a Cisco 3650e 48 port POE Gb switch with 2 10Gb uplinks, although there are better options, the Cisco made sense for me since I am in IT and also use it for learning.

Gary Hi, I am curious as to how you used 2 pairs per camera and kept the B format, when your given striped orange, solid orange(1) striped green, solid blue|striped blue(2), solid green(3), stripped brown|brown(4). When using B format you your going to have four conductors on each punch down that coordinates with the color scheme. I guess what your implying is the first 2 pairs you punch down on the left side and pairs 3 and 4 you punch down on the right side of the keystone in order to keep the same color schemes to match B format. If not, please explain....thanks!!!

My question is .... whether I can use the remaining 6 PoE ports of NVR as switch ports for a small home network and avoid investing into purchasing a separate switch box. My other concern is whether these spare PoE ports would be 'Active or Passive' If these are Passive PoEs ....then will they cause other issues....? I don't think they come that big, and you also need to take up link into account. Depends what your camera is set to but let's say 6Mbps. 52x6= 312 Mbit, so won't work on a full 100Mbit switch but it can if your switch and NVR have a Gigabit port too.

I have a question please, i see some POE switch that use pins 4,5 for - (48V) and pins 7,8 for + (48V) and some other POE switch that use pins 4,5 for + (48V) and pins 7,8 for - (48V) , so what should i choose ? or the camera dosn't care ? (use bridge inside on camera ?) Thank you in advance. Best Regards, Tasos

Wikipedia actually has a good diagram about this but normally, 100Mbit mode B should use 4,5 for + and 7,8 for -. I find it odd that some switches/injectors might do it differently but if you have to chose, chose what I just wrote. That's compatible with the official standards. I think in the end the camera won't mind and rectify it but I don't have experience with it.

What I don’t understand is the whole point of the POE is to have one wire for power but by adding an injector you need a second source of power for it making it two connections. If it is one IP camera, wouldn’t it be the same like using the 12 volt charger and an Ethernet cable (2 connections)?

If using injectors and extractors, yes. But the idea is to just have a Active POE switch with a POE capable device, that way you need nothing extra and it just works when you plug it in.

Hello, but aren't those IP cameras usually 12 V? I do not have to somehow step down POE voltage to 12 V? Thank you.

If you directly connect it using the DC in they are 12v, but using POE over the network cable they need 48v

Is a 15w poe switch enough or is a 25w poe switch better ?
@IntermitTech
@IntermitTech 5 жыл бұрын
15w 802.3af is generally enough for most devices like IP cameras and access-points etc.. Unless you get into mega PTZ cameras with lots of IR for instance. But then the cost of a POE switch won't really matter either. 😅

@@TKommandant it says compatible with 802.3af so 15w. They also mention a switch that is only 802.3af or 15w compatible. So you'd be fine getting that, it can't hurt to also get something that is 802.3at compatible, but for this camera at least (and for most), it's not needed.

Get a better NVR with app? Generally it's 2s to 3s anyway because of RTSP and buffering, especially if not on local network.

For the novice user, this is fine. If you want more capabilities, then buy an active switch. I think buying a 24 port used active gigabit switch on ebay for around $50 is the best option if you can deal with the fan noise.
