Today I'll be replacing a broken screen on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm pretty excited since I haven't gotten to work on one of these until now. I guess I slipped a bit at some step and nicked the display ribbon, but thankfully the proximity and earspeaker were still intact. Links to parts and tools below.
This device was much more difficult to open than previous iPhones, mostly in part to the absolutely paper thin display. It's really no wonder it broke from a frontal impact, there's no support.

I feel like with older devices they were designing the outside, then just telling engineers "make it fit" but thankfully many refinements have been made since. The iPhone 4 was no fun.

Is there nothings specific that has to be done for the face id? I heard that its easy to make the face id not work doing screen replacements? Idk if its cause of the afternarket screen? If it is cheap Or the tech messing something up..

It's entirely from technicians slipping or cutting it, or the fact that Apple made such a poorly designed part. The aftermarket screens are perfectly fine, Apple's engineering team is not.

The iCopy tool will keep truetone but this does not prevent the message from popping up. I believe this one was copied off screen.

That would fix it. The touch sensitive layer is actually part of the glass, so when it cracks its quite normal to have touch response go a bit weird

OEM part won't do much for you, without Apple's online diagnostic software the screen still won't have truetone and will give a non-genuine display warning.

Difference is that most original batteries have been pulled from devices, there's no telling how many charge cycles they've been through. An aftermarket battery on the other hand is most likely to be brand new, no cycles.

Being the most expensive iPhone of the time, screens are still very expensive. With the parts shortage coming into swing, the best prices are likely to be on Mobile Defenders or Mobile Sentrix, at least for a reliable screen.

This one came from Mobile Defenders, I've not really had any issues with their iPhone screens except for the XR and iPhone 11.

I wouldn't recommend taking it in the water even if it were brand new. They are water resistant, but if water gets in it also resists coming out. After repair the device is likely much less water resistant unless you use a vacuum sealer or press to adhere it.

when i did open my phone i dont have the aproximly sensoron the screen its in the phone its an iphone 12 pro max 512 . the new lcd screen also dont fit becouse it have some pins that the origonal screen dont have.

All depends on why it won’t turn on. In most cases they can hook up parts temporarily to power it on and recover data.

The adhesive comes pre-cut and can be lined up into the frame. I didn't show it on video this time, though I don't recall why

What's the difference between the "Incell" and the "Prime" screen replacements??

Incell is typically a lower quality, where the digitizer is actually a part of the (likely LCD) display. Prime is usually an Apple branded OLED that has been refurbished with an aftermarket digitizer and glass.

Is this "genuine message" a big deal? Will it affect the functionality of the phone? I mean, if this message does not bother me, can i still use the phone normally?

Absolutely no effect on functionality, just annoying pop up. It goes away after a few days and stops popping up thankfully. I only mention is because I do occasionally hear complaints from customers who don't understand.

@@daydream2818 you'll need to be Apple certified and have access to their weird little AST2 web software in order to program the phone to see the screen as genuine. They like to disable features when customers don't go to them for repairs, "security" they say, "anti-repair" is what consumers call it. As for True Tone you can use an iCopy tool to copy the serial numbers over, and there are now some dedicated True Tone programmers available from places like MobileSentrix, but they can't get rid of the non-genuine warning.

iFixit sells some pretty great toolkits, but mine actually came from a local hardware store. It was a precision screwdriver set that included the triwings and pentalobes

The pop-up goes away after some time, but in the settings menu it will always say it's non-genuine unless you install an OEM and use Apple's proprietary "RepairCal" and AST2 software to program it.

Something might be shorted from it, but here's to hoping. You can try disconnecting the battery again, or if it's already closed up try the soft reboot with volume up, then down, and hold power for about 10 seconds. Hopefully a reboot is all it needs, if not, try another screen and hope!

Depends on the quality of the screen you get. Given the prices of these from a couple vendors I'm thinking these are basically OEM pulls (pretty expensive), so these sit perfectly. I was really surprised by how thin they were, I'm wondering if some of the cheaper aftermarket ones will poke out.

Will Face ID and other features (like TrueTone) work just like before?

Face ID will keep working as long as the sensor isn't damaged, it's a separate component. TrueTone will disable if the serial number isn't copied from the original screen, QianLi makes a tool called the iCopy that will do it for you, but I believe it will still give the "non-genuine display" warning for a few days on the lock screen.

@@TapticDigital ok thank you! I’m still not sure what to do in my situation - I managed to hit mine right in the Face ID sensor area. Can’t tell if Face ID isn’t working due to the cracked glass obscuring it or if the sensor is damaged. Also, it’s still under the basic warranty, so if I try to open it, that will probably void it.

@@vader5504 does the screen display still? If Face ID is damaged it will always put a notification on screen saying "Unable to Activate Face ID", if you aren't getting that message there's a good chance it'll be okay and keep working once the screen is replaced.

Not unless you're part of Apple's Independent Repair Program, which is honestly a joke and designed to shut down repair shops. The pop up part of the message goes away after a few days

Does it try to turn on? As in, vibrate, sounds, anything like that? You can also connect it to a computer and see if iTunes detects it. It may be on, just in a recovery mode with a blank screen.

@@clarkkids3574 you may have some deeper damage then, but it could be something as simple as a loose battery connection. Also check the ribbons for the battery to ensure there are no tears, then connect it to a charger which should prompt it to power on whether you hit the button or not

So my iPhone 12 pro max has a spotless screen but is semi unresponsive or have to multiple tap to use it, would I just have to replace the touch sensor? And/or how much would it be? Thanks

You can replace the touch controller but it's some pretty intensive microsoldering, likely as much as a new display. A screen replacement could help, but so could running an update through iTunes, which I would try first. I've also been getting a lot of iPhone 11 and 12 coming in with no touch, only to have a reboot fix it for a while. iOS is kinda wonky lately.

You can order the precut adhesive for very cheap, they are incredibly easy to mess up. Chances are I didn’t include it because I had to try so many times to get it perfect but couldn’t with a camera in the way.

@@TapticDigital I appreciate the quick response, I actually ended up snapping the cable to the earpiece too which sucks but is totally my fault. I will order new pieces and try again. I did have a hard time taking off the screen without breaking it which didn’t matter to the last one because it was totally destroyed anyways, but when I eventually attempt to put a new earpiece on I do want to take off the screen without damaging it. Do you have any tips on that?

Depending on screen quality the parts are anywhere from $70-$140. If taken to a shop they’ll usually add $50-$100 in labor, so you’d be looking at anywhere from $120-$200 for a repair.

No noticeable differences, works just as well as a genuine display. It has the same resolution, refresh rate, and brightness.

Any iPhone 12 and newer, should just be taken to Apple. The 12s are great phones, and still worthy for the premium oem screen and battery. Anything else and it’ll just be a damaged iPhone 12 Pro Max with a Chinese screen on it.

The only benefit of an OEM is true tone functionality, which apple serial locked. Thankfully 3rd part Chinese companies have made copy devices for it so your aftermarket will be just as good as OEM. Also since those OLEDs typically come from the same supplier as Apple uses, it's the same screen, you can just get it fixed cheaper and faster at a third party shop. Oh, and using Apple's OEM programmer requires it to "scan" all your phone's history, data, logs, usage times, number of photos and texts, contacts, and it's all sent off to Apple servers.

Because it's a real OLED display, just like the original? Even if you install an OEM display straight from Apple, it will look the exact same as the aftermarket unless you have access to Apple's authorized tools. But don't feel bad, the factory Apple screen isn't great either.

@@dondon-on9qp still no such thing as a fake display, but yes you can swap an Apple brand to one and it still won't work properly with true tone because Apple serializes displays. True tone will never work again unless Apple approves a serial swap.
