iPhone 12 Pro MAX vs Professional Camera

Comparing the new iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple's best camera you can currently buy on any iPhone (better than the regular iPhone 12 Pro), versus the Sony a7r4, my professional workhorse camera.
To make things fairer for the iPhone (Apple outputs processed JPEG's vs Sony's RAW output), I tweaked the Sony files in Adobe Camera Raw to match as closely to Apple iPhone's images as possible. Specifically white balance, vibrancy, shadows and highlights only. I did not manipulate the iPhone images in anyway, so as to give it the best, untouched pixels possible for comparison.
Of course, the Sony does not replace the iPhone for majority of professional work. It's still missing a lot of creative control both in camera and in post. But for the majority of camera consumers, who only output their photos on social media, and only want minimal creative manipulation, the gap has become so close.
This was filmed on 16th Nov 2020, before Apple's ProRAW has been publicly released outside of Beta. It will be interesting to do this comparison again when ProRAW is out, as I will be able to match them much more closely!

I am glad to see you are doing things and being active. A few years ago when I shot cars full time for a living I fell in love with your work.

It's all about tools for the right job aye. We sold my wife's Canon 550D a few years back and got her an iPhone X with Portrait mode and she hasn't looked back (upgraded from a previous 6S). Her photography levels are just that of capturing images of her class on excursions or inner school events and for just pulling out the iPhone and getting the results she needs, it's perfect. She has not once craved a DSLR of any sort ever since.

My mother dearest is due to upgrade her phone, but she also has wanted me to recommend her a “good camera” to buy for better and more serious picture taking. I’m gonna steer her to the new iPhone because it’s the one she’s going to use, and she and her friends would never know the image difference to a real camera.

The two things that jump out for me with the iPhone are first and foremost Apple's aggressive sharpening and high contrast

Saw your instagram post. Yeah, in social media its really hard to distinguish but like you said, mobile phones tend to increase the vibrancy and sometimes the saturation more than prosumer cameras. That's how I guess the difference

Haha nice one, you beat the masses and guessed correctly. It wasn’t totally fair for the Sony, it was entirely set with conditions that benefit the strength of the iPhone but we all know what the iPhone can’t do (real bokeh, full manual settings, raw for now, genuine depth of field, authentic colours, interchangeable quality glass and dynamic range). So my Instagram poll was just to see if we’re looking only at viewable IQ alone, how close has the gap got.

Can you give shooting with the Halide app a go on the 12 Pro Max..? True RAW, avoiding any of Apple’s processing done on their ProRaw format. Would love to see how you think the photos it produces compare to your professional Sony camera.

Hi mate! I'll give this a go once I get my hands on a 12 Pro Max again. My initial assumption though is Halide will be better if it can provide manual controls in shooting, which in my mind is a bigger benefit to my shoot than the difference in raw formats. Using the native camera app was different to expose right.

Hi mate! I will eventually do a video like this, but it could be awhile. The phone belongs to my friend, so it's not easy for me to do such a comprehensive video. My mother dearest is picking one of these up soon, I think I shall borrow hers to do more videos with when she gets it :)

I have shelved my nikons and Sony mirrorless. I have the 12 pro max. To be fair it isn’t the best choice for say bird photography. But for 90 percent of photo duties. The 12 does a incredible job. The purists will come around one day. It want many years ago the talk was digital will never replace film.

Okay, not a fair comparisson, but that wasn't the idea of this test. What is amazing is how well the video is on the 12 Pro. On the 12 Pro Max its even a bit better, especially with the standard lens. I know a lot of Pixel peepers with DSLR or Mirrorless cameras. or with expensive Video Cameras have been howling for years that their stuff is better than a smartphone. Well, they are right, kinda sorta, but not getting the point. Video from an iPhone is amazing. I own a FF Canon with a set of Lenses I could have bought a nice car for, a Panasonic nice Camcorder, an iPhone X and an iPhone 12 Pro Max but to be honest, I prefer filming with the iPhones.

If I used the iPhone 12 when I was shooting for Import Tuner and SuperStreet, I bet no one would be able to tell what camera I used.

It will do ... but the picture is still of low quality ....... the matrix is too small, and Apple's optics are not very good ... I'd rather shoot the RX100M5 ...
