I worked for the first HD video production company in the US back in 91/92. At the time, a single 3-tube camera and 1” open reel recorder cost well over $500k (in 91 dollars). What is most astonishing to me is that I am now able to acquire a higher quality image in such a tiny form factor for a fraction of the cost, without requiring an engineer (or three).

I think Apple is really missing an opportunity to create the BEST set up. Imagine your phone on a MagSafe tripod with a thunderbolt cable connected to your MacBook Pro... it's like a mini studio in a back pack. Set up 3 phones for different angles and you can do interviews, etc.

10:30-11:16 Rene, this discussion about the lack of Thunderbolt support is important. At what point does Apple finally address this? While having ProRes on an iPhone is awesome, the throughput limitation for transferring data is maddening. What’s the point of having a Ferrari if you can only drive it on local roads at 20mph/kph? When will Apple finally address this?

Meanwhile here i’m with my iphone 13 pro max (256gb) and it really is embarrasing this lightning port, this was my first iphone ever also (i moved from long time android usage), but this fcking slow lightning port is absolutely one of the worst of iphones negative sides, and this came with usb-c to lightning port cable, like wtf, it doesn’t even make sense, only made things harder, that I can’t charge this phone on anywhere else than on my single macbook 61wat charger (which has usb-c port) atm, I have to still go and buy like usb-A to lightning port to be able to charge on my car etc ffs…

Rene, is that pro res video you showed side by side starting around the 5:04 mark of the video more choppy than the HEVC video? Why does that happen? I understand the footage is much larger and more difficult to save to storage, but I didn't think it might affect the stability of the video. Or maybe it's just a placebo and they're both the same?

You know, some video professionals come on this channel as guests and their video and audio quality is horrendous. This guest, on the other hand, really did an excellent job of having great video/audio from his side and so we could concentrate more on the message than horrendous quality that occurs with some other guests (not Gruber; his video/audio, which I understand was from the new MBP, was excellent as well). And this guest really sounds like he knows what he's talking about lol.

Yes Rene could you, and other pundits please stop talking about the "dreaded notch", and the size of bezels. Professionals, and normals need the best tech when it comes to the connection port. Apple needs to put UBS4 host mode all options on its devices like the iPhone. That would give us 40 Gbit/s data transfer rate when connected to any of the new Apple M1 series mac's.

Amazing videos from prores, only to be limited by the archaic lightning chord that makes those ultra-sized files transfer at ultra-slow speeds. Hear me out apple: THE LIGHTNING HAS TO GO!

Just use airdrop it should be atleast faster than lightning

@@dreamsider can’t airdrop without mac. Also it would still be slower than the potential of usb c.

The more you explain it the more i get convinced we’re asked to pay MORE for features we DONT need as simple users! I want a nice screen 120hz refresh and a better battery life. But Definitely not this!!!!!

Good informative interview. However, I’m not the guy who flies to Africa to go on safari and films giraffes in ProRes so this stuff is almost completely irrelevant to me personally. I do, however, empathize with your pain over the damnable Lightning connector. That’s just ridiculous on Apple’s part.

obviously the video / Camera on iPhone 13 is just beyond this world. Then why should I have Whatapp or tinder in a such a beautiful “phone” . Apple could perhaps create a totally new device just for video without sim or all those other disruptions. A dedicated video perhaps , or iPod with such capabilities!,,

Now all it needs is a USB C ... And it will be almost perfect having to waste 2hrs to transfer a file in 2022 is simply not right.

Lightening is the clear bottleneck. I hate when Apple does not make changes that are clearly logical and will benefit users only because at some point they said “Lightning will be the connector for the next 10 years”. Who cares if they change if 7 years later, 8 years later, or 9 years later…
