I’ve been asking for an always-on iPhone display… it’s gotta be… 5 years now. Basically, ever since Apple took it OLED with the iPhone X back in 2017.
I mean, Nokia phones have had it since 1812… or 2010… one of those years. And Android phones from Samsung to Google to Moto have been… yoting them out for what feels like half to a decade by now. Even the Apple Watch managed to get its always on back in 2019. You know, the before times…
And yet, it feels like every year, on the year, someone goes and says this year, no, *this year*, the iPhone will finally be getting always on. Like, just keep saying it, and it has to come true eventually, right? And who knows, sure, maybe. I’m honestly so far beyond burned out by all the leaks constantly flooding my feeds these days anyway.
But it does raise a super interesting question. Why is it taking Apple so damn long, so damn always, to just give us all these features anyway? And is rapid adaption of new technologies maybe, just maybe, something Android handles way better?

As the go-to tech guy in my circle, I much prefer Apple’s approach. As a software engineer, I prefer Apple’s approach. Aside from small tweaks and bug fixes (which is not really what we’re talking about here), I’ve long said that people will remember if you get it right and forgive you for being late, but wont give you credit for being on time if you get it wrong. They’ll just remember that it was wrong.

apple literally fix the AOD on 14 Pro because apple owners think it's too bright you can literally see the wallpaper when you lock the screen before the update. they add option to turn off wallpaper on AOD later. so it is now more like samsung and other android AOD, just show time, date and notifications.

After over 30 years in IT I can tell everyone the correct path is almost always make sure it is right rather than right now... I love the bleeding edge, it's exciting but when spending millions on infrastructure it needs to be right and work with a few issues as possible. That usually means waiting a few years to let others work the bugs out. Moving back to Apple after over 10 years, I've found Apples' plans work well for me personally, I don't worry if it's going to work removes additional stress and allows me to focus on studying technology where I need to rather than focusing on if my personal tech is going to work or not.

When you adopt this logic to the PC gaming community it's actually the complete opposite. PC gamers (and oftentimes console gamers) will often defend gaming developers/publishers when a popular game is delayed. The thinking is that if they have more time it will mean a better product in the end. For me, I'd rather wait for Apple to get it right than to release features just for the sake of releasing them. Do you know anyone that regularly uses the eye tracking features on a Samsung phone?

Why do we need a always on display?
@Xantar
@Xantar 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don’t get it. I don’t need my phone to always be on. Always on doesn’t mean always unlocked, so it doesn’t actually make it faster for me to use the phone. I still have to wait a quarter second for Face ID to unlock whenever I want to do something on the phone. So basically always on just means I get constant access to the unlock screen. Which doesn’t seem that useful.

As a user of the now defunct Microsoft Lumia 950, back in 2016, it has always on display, only for date, time and number of messages. That is also the Google Pixel as well. You don’t need to pick up the phone to show this.
@DanielSzilagyi
@DanielSzilagyi 2 жыл бұрын
Always on would be nice but I see it as a "nice to have" rather than a "must-have" and at one point, if the issue is notifications or something I'd opt for a light/dot/similar instead. I actually loved that feature on my old Nexus'. 120hz refresh is still mainly a waste IMO, there is little need for it unless you're doing some hardcore mobile phone gaming and even then I'd argue it's not worth the cost in battery or overall cost for something you can't notice after a few weeks time. Having industry-first features doesn't matter, it's how well you do it and how well it sticks even if it's been done before you

I think there’s perfect room for both methodologies to exist. And personally, I prefer the ‘right’ to ‘right now’ approach Apple takes. It may take a bit longer for us to see these features ship on iPhone, and we’ll inevitably see rude articles saying as much haha but I think a big driver behind their method is their care for the experience. They’d rather ship a fully fleshed out, fully tested feature and continue to evolve it over time from that superior starting point than rush to market and end up creating even more work, or worse yet, deal with intense backlash from customers over its poor implementation

Great video as always! For me, I think Apple isn’t so concerned with the “wants” of its fans with respect to releasing new feature sets. They are, and have alway been, the guardians of their walled galaxy (in the best possible way). So for them, control and mastery of the feature is paramount. Therefore, they will always master the feature before shipping. And I believe it’s this mastery that have separated them as a brand that stands alone (again, in the best possible way)

I spent 30 years in the IT world. I think that for most users, the Apple approach is the best option. People’s lives are already full and they do not want one more thing to worry about. It constantly amazes me how little most users know about the potential of the Iphone that they own. Each person uses the 10 or so features that matter most to them and all the rest of the product’s potential just lies dormant, and they are fine with that.

Great video. I love how your videos span both the tech and politics of Apple. I think Apple buyers have been loud and clear that they prefer the polished, fully functional end product. It’s tech reviewers who try to convince everyone that Apple is always “late”. That’s silly when publications from Bloomberg to the NYT to Patently Apple bombard the airwaves with speculations about every minor patent filed or supply chain addition. We KNOW when Apple starts to work on a feature. For example, for years Apple has been working on blood sugar and pressure sensors for the Watch. Now EVERYONE says they are. Like the 120 refresh rate, we knew Apple brought it to mobile first and understood Apple found a barrier with smaller devices. Tech reviewers were going ballistic but Apple doesn’t do “buggy and glitchy messes”, very often but they do PRICING PAINS well! Buyers understood with Apple either we pay A LOT more for the expensive work-around Apple undoubtedly has or we wait for the ducks Apple needed to line up to offer the feature at or around the current cost. We don’t mind waiting.

The pace that tech is moving (and for the sake of Apple's scale and loyalty due to quality) right > right now. It's quite impressive when apple was hitting record sales of 10M+ iPhone sales, with little issues with QA. Outside of "antennagate," it's an impressive feat. Add the 5+ years of support, they prove right also has better value.

I think Apple has made its reputation on getting it right, even though they don’t always (think Maps & MobileMe), so I don’t expect that to change. I must say, apple got followed "get it right" philosophy most of time, however there are instances where they took the same approach of get it right now, A good example is the apple pencil, with in 2 years they produced a second gen, forcing anyone coming from 1st or second gen ipad pro to a next gen to spend more money to get a gen 2 pencil. The same goes for force touch!

Honestly, I don’t like the “always on” idea. I like how I touch the screen and it turns on and I can already use. I don’t like this basic always on display that is just another barrier for me to unlock my phone. Trust me, I used android and I didn’t like the feature there either.

Apple should never go “right now”, I don’t care as much for new tech that I care for tech that works and is easy to use.

I've had almost every iPhone since the 5, Many Samsung Notes and S series', and a few Pixels. They all have their pluses and minuses. It bugs me when Apple fans get so excited when they get a feature Android has had for years. It REALLY bugs me when the industry follows Apple in getting rid of features like charging bricks in the box. I think it may be catching up to them. In my opinion, aside from iMessage, Samsung has the superior product in almost every way. Apple better get on that periscope zoom for example. iPads better catch up to Tab S8's Dex Mode too... Take your foot off the break Apple!

What is apple’s excuse to not include usb c and yet sell 1 tb iPhones is what baffles me the most…software wise it’s smooth, but that ridiculous I pill , no usb c and that front cam , maybe that side steel glossy fingerprint magnets and no Touch ID (not even in power buttons) when they clearly got the tech….I mean it’s disappointing, I am waiting for a decent release to get an iPhone but every time there’s a release it’s meh…battery is probably one step in right direction

From a geek perspective, right now is the answer. But, in reality, getting it right is really what matters and why I am on the Apple ecosystem. Some (most) of these features don't really matter to most users. Get it right.

I truly agree with Apple in holding back some new! Tech until they have check the pro & cons with them. Makes no sense Apple rushing to give us The latest when they have not look at the causes that they may carry to our devices. At the end of the day customers are not going to be on please that they spent so much for a faulty product put Apple standards to drop! Oh no don’t want that

I feel that Apple does not want to be drawn into those dog eat dog spec-wars we get in Android, and have just decided that although they will get trolled by Android fans and will be behind the curve, it is better to wait it out till your business model aligns; in the case of AOD, getting those LTPO 1Hz displays so that AOD sips battery (my Pixel 6 Pro uses 1% an hour on AOD so I do not bother). Apple simply do not follow the rabble crowd and that to me is fine as if you do not like that and always want the latest feature then you can choose Android. Another factor is that Apple develops its own tech so it does not spend decades paying licenses or patent fees. That is why their periscope camera is taking a while, they do not want to pay Samsung to license their patents so have to get around that with their own original design. This is good for the longter term as it will restrict fixed costs. Samsung chooses to pay Qualcomm a cost per device to use their ultrasonic FP sensor, Apple developed 3D Face-ID where they own most of the patents and this keeps costs down. So Apple is thinking about the big picture, years ahead, where as the Android OEM is always chasing specs and features to gain an edge in a highly competitive Android world (outside the anti-consumer US).

Proves that apple sticks to what they’ve always said, “it’s about the the user experience” which means new features and technology will always come second to that.
