Fast charging heats up the phone way faster which degrades the battery faster. If phones were tablet sized and companies invested as much money into them, we'd have excellent cooling and fast charging above 50w would be the standard, but they're not Edit : I do not blame fast chargers alone fyi. If your phone doesn't heat up because of it, great. But not everyone lives in ideal conditions and here in South Asia, with warm weathers throughout the years, fast chargers often overheat phones. That HEAT degrades battery. Also, how are some of you people's comprehension so bad? The phone and tablet market are two very different things, why haven't we seen much tablets with high end specs? Cause the market's small and the risks are high. Because of that, tablets do not support as fast of a charger as some phones. Not because it's impossible, just because it isn't worth the trouble

@Mardoxx7 I have a very strong feeling you don't actually do much to protect the environment and recycle, you're just virtue signaling, and no separating your trash from your recycle at your house (if you even do that) when in the vast majority of states and local principalities it all goes to the same landfill anyways (look it up) doesn't count. Upgrading at two years is very common and reasonable. If he traded in his phone its getting reused, if he kept it as a backup there's practical application there too, maybe he gave it away to a family member or friend. There is no reason to assume wastefulness here, in conclusion fuck off with your BS, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I absolutely adore this phone! Ive had the 12 mini for a little over a year and a half and the battery health was at 81%. My phone wouldnt even last me a school day which is 8:35-3:35. It was laggy, the battery sucked, and the screen was too small imo. Im a girl and i have bigger hands so i love bigger screens. That being said, i wanted one of the 14 series and i was stuck between the 14 pro max, 13 pro max, and 14 plus. In the end, i chose the 14 plus. I didnt care for all the extra pro features and gimmicks. My 14 plus has everything i want and need in a phone: bigger screen for cheaper price, BEST battery life (used my phone from 6:30 am all the way to 9pm and my phone wasnt even below 20%. Havent had to charge it once. My 12 mini could never!!) and a great camera! The 14 plus is a great phone with great features AND colors (i got purple and it’s beautiful) and i think if you dont want/need all the extra weight (cuz this 14 plus is SUPER LIGHT!!) and the extra features and gimmicks of the pro phones and you want a GREAT FREAKING BATTERY, get the 14 plus!!!!! 10/10!!!!

One of the primary issues with today's marketing is the the lack of ingenuity in order to promote cash grabs. Nowadays it's more about the amount of sales instead of the amount of real satisfaction. Thanks for touching on this, it says a lot. Edit: I am NOT saying all products are designed to swindle nor do I mean sales were never the point from day one. Yet in some areas with certain circumstances it seems like less bang for your buck is a result of some corporations.

Been contemplating on upgrading from my current 12 mini to a 14 pro max for awhile. But in the end, I've decided to the 14 plus instead. Just as MKBHD mentioned, benchmarks are getting less significant for the average consumer like us, but rather, which specific features of the phone matters most to us. To me, battery life is the main issue I'm having with my current 12 mini, which is why 14 plus would make more sense as compared to the pro max. Thanks for this video, informative as always.

Haven't experienced any sort of glitching and heating, works smootly and fast. Camera is excellent, of course compared to the 8plus it's a big and satisfying upgrade, but I must say that the Pro series may be a better choice in terms of photo quality. That's literally what everyone does. Tech reviewers make it seem like people buy new phones every year. Sure Apple brings only a few small improvements each year, but people with iPhones upgrade usually after 4 or 5 years. Coming from an iPhone 8 to for example the 14 Plus is a pretty damn significant upgrade. And if those people were able to use the 8/8 Plus until now, they'll be able to use the 14 Plus for the next 5 years with no issues.

The battery drain has been very strange with IOS 16. I have the 11 Pro max with charge case, typically charge it at night and it lasts until late into the next night, never had an issue with battery. My charge case is basically now useless as the phone loses charge so fast now that its draining faster than the case can deliver. If I restart my phone however it returns to normal and they begin charging at similar rates, really annoying and I hope they fix, was hoping to upgrade to the 14 but will see my other options if this doesn't get fixed soon. I'd normally just put this down to battery wear and tear however this only started after updating to IOS 16 and once I restart it its normal again. Thank you for highlighting these issues

So, I've noticed an increase in connection problems with Wireless CarPlay as well. iPhone 13 Pro though so it's gotta be something in iOS 16. When it does connect it connects quickly...but sometimes the only way I can get it to connect is to toggle Airplane Mode on and off then try again.

Awesome video! My 12 Pro Max to 14 Pro Max upgrade has been nothing but stellar. Every aspect of the device is upgraded! And the new screen is amazing… In regards to battery life, I’m seeing an actual increase of more than 50% depending on usage (with 5G disabled), running two eSims. I do notice a much more significant battery drain with 5G enabled, and the benefit of having it enabled is minuscule where I’m located. With 5G enabled for both sims, I am seeing about 40% increased battery life over my previous device. It also becomes much warmer with constant use having 5G enabled. Hopefully that is addressed in the 16 Pro series, which will be my next device. (1/2)

Glad you mentioned the benchmarks and buying for use case.. I feel everything in life is now buying for your specific use case. It’s great we live in a time to be able to buy ultra specific cars, phones, CPU’s, GPU’s etc etc. But also tough when we do want to buy something to meet various needs. Look at all the new GPU’s coming out, you literally need to buy your GPU based on the specific game you play for optimal performance.

I came from the 12 Pro Max and I upgraded to the 14 Pro. The battery is just a little bit better but still enough for me however, I do agree with you Mark, the battery performs better when the always on display is Off. I personally don’t need to have it on but at the same time is something like, Yes you do have this new feature in your device you just can’t use because your battery is gonna died fast. About the CarPlay I’m not experiencing any delay in connection, it is actually pretty fast comparing to the 12 pro Max I had before.

+1 to battery drain from me. After I updated to iOS 16 (and even 16.0.2), my iPhone 11 started to consume much more battery when being idle. Had to turn off a lot of stuff on my phone using "improve battery life" guides from the Internet, now it seems to be better, but it sucks that I have to do that. Should've stayed on iOS 15, but I wanted to play with the new "extract subject from photos" feature so bad. :-)

I'd be down for an X Months Later series where you do similar updates like this on current flagships. Android 12 and the Pixel 6 had a bit of a rough start for some but I similarly didn't experience any of what I saw others reporting and it has improved over time. I just noticed with either 13 or a monthly patch they changed the haptic feedback for the fingerprint sensor to a single click. It lends credence to my idea that part of what made people think it was unreliable/slow was the use of two haptic clicks instead of just one when recognized. A friend told me he was having issues with his because it kept telling him "not recognized" even though he felt the click. Once I explained there should be two and he started waiting for the second he said it worked perfectly fine for him. I guess the idea was to provide haptic feedback both for "finger detected" and "print recognized" since you can't feel where the sensor is for the former. I quite liked it but it seems that ended up confusing people used to only the latter and their "hold a little longer" message on the lock screen apparently wasn't sufficient. Noticed now that has been replaced with "press firmly on the sensor". I think such a series could be good at highlighting some of the little changes like these that can make a big difference to user experience as well as how long after launch issues persist.

Can definitely get behind the battery issue, though it may extend to battery health as well. Have had a 12 mini for only about a year now, but after updating, not only did the battery life get SIGNIFICANTLY worse (which is made more confusing by the fact that it was already pretty bad), but my battery health is already down to 89%. My previous iPhone only got down to that amount of battery health after almost two years, and I’m pretty sure the majority of the tank was shortly after I updated, considering just about a week ago it read as 91%.

I’m surprised Apple didn’t make a dynamic always on display. As the phone tries to understand your daily schedule and also takes into account other factors like battery, time of day, devices being used, app activities, location, etc. It takes into account all of this and tried to understand when you’re more likely to “glance” at your For example, being at work and the always on display having the time and picture but then it changes into just the time once you head somewhere you’re less likely to use your phone.

Great point on the benchmark thing , and that also leads us to another annoying thing about benchmarks and more particularly , these big phone makers often taking these facts and figures way out of context for marketing purposes , in some instances showing fancy colourful graphs showing performance increases in big splashy detail , but then in the fine print it mentions up against a device model 2 or 3 years old😂. And we saw this I think on more than one occasion with apples marketing of MacBooks and Mac Studio .

I’ve found that the battery drain and iPhone overheating issue is due to the 5G and Wi-Fi transition. At time the Wi-Fi will connect to an access point (AP) that’s either busy or has no connection. When this happens iCloud become unresponsive and the phone starts to time out. At times if you are playing music through Apple Music the music will stop or once Wi-Fi reconnects the music will skip to a different song. Apple car play will also time out as well as GPS for third party apps such as Waze or Google Maps. I suggested to Apple that before connecting to an AP the phone should ping to check latency and then connect once it can determine ip availability. The blended 5G and Wi-Fi causes the phone to freeze or heat up at times due to the iPhone requiring the use of iCloud to authenticate, verify and access information. I feel if this changes then transition will be seem less.
