Retroreflective sensor is widely used in industries. Proximity sensor or Photoelectric sensor or IR Sensor are used to detect object. Retro-reflective sensor is a type of photoelectric sensor which uses reflector,the working principle of infra-red sensor. This retroreflective sensor of both emitter and receiver in one body.

Very important note about sensors: *5V IR sensor(module-Arduino Sensor) fails over time because it is not a industrial sensors. *PIR sensor malfunctions in open environment. Best Solution is to use Industrial sensors because they are made in order to work in harsh conditions and are more reliable for making full proof system.

Yes timer is needed to hold the signal. And timer will decide for how much time motor needs to run after getting signal from sensor.
