In this video we shoot and discuss the Egyptian Hakim chambered in 8mm Mauser. These rifles were based off the Swedish AG-42 Ljungman and were built to utilize the massive stockpiles of 8mm ammunition the Egyptians owned post WW2. The Hakim differs slightly from the AG-42 in that it features an adjustable gas system and a more substantial muzzle break to combat recoil from the more powerful 8mm cartridge. This particular example was produced in 1960 and is just an absolute joy to shoot as you will see. Stay tuned, much more military surplus content inbound.

Daddy Keemstar because it's not about rifles, it's about military readiness. this rifle dates back way before the six days war. today this is just a pure ancient architecture that can deal some pretty dangerous damage if it is used right. we lost to Israel in 1967 because most of our military firepower was placed on yemen. if you're going to turn this into a political debate like a 10 year child on who lost to whom then drag your ass out of here, no one wants that bullshit over here.

Anthony Pickens, jmans is on it. The political climate of recent years has contributed massively to people buying up tons of firearms and driving the price up on just about everything. I doubt prices (especially ammo prices) go down becuase now sellers know people will pay more

Well, that and the fact that there's a shrinking amount of them each day. No, it has nothing to do with Sandy Hook. That had no effect on the surplus firearms market, but was more prevalent to the commercial firearms market.

@jayn8392

Agreed, them (and other youtubers) have increased the awarness for some of these cool old guns. Thegoldencaulk, I would argue that politics still have an effect on the surplus market. When it was really crazy people (at least in my area) were buying up anything semi auto with a detachable mag and pistols 9mm and higher (even mosins vanished). Before everything went nuts I could still find most popular surplus guns easily and for a decent price. Now I rarely see anything, and when I do it's overpriced because like you said, there aren't any more being made. The commercial market was deff hit harder, but they are always making more of those.

I’ve had my Hakim for about 4 years and I absolutely love it! I’ve fired hundreds of rounds through it. It’s very accurate. I can’t imagine how much more accurate it could be if I loaded my own ammo. I just use cheap surplus 8mm. I’ll never get rid of it. Plus it’s a conversation piece at the range. Most people have no idea what it is or they confuse it with being an SVT40.

The adjustable direct gas impingement is an Egyptian design on this rifle. When Egypt bought the tooling and design of the Swedish 6.5x55 from Sweden, it wanted to make good use of the huge stockpiles of 8mm ammunition it had since the end of WWll. The Swedes had a fixed gas system which didn't allow adjustments. Aside from the gas system, the rest of the adjustments made in Egypt are obvious; a beefier barrel, and a fixed, integral muzzle break were added to tame the recoil of the 8mm. Incidentally, the muzzle break is not a flash suppressor. It was strictly added to mitigate recoil. Great, very informative video ! Well done !!

Back around 1970 or so, a friend of mine purchased a Hakim at a now defunct (chain) Five and Dime, of all places, in North Carolina for $75.00. To this day he owns only two center fire rifles, the Hakim and a WWII German semiauto rifle that his now deceased Dad brought home in 1946 and willed to my friend. Bill switches off hunting with the two rifles depending on how he feels when he wakes up on "Hunting Day" and has managed to fill his freezer with venison and pork/bacon every year with one or the other of the two rifles.

At a local range 4-5 years ago, most people were packing up for the day when an old timer drove up and pulled a Hakim out of his truck. Having never seen one before I just had to ask what it was. I waited until he fired about 20 rounds and was taking a short break. After about 5 minutes of talking to him he volunteered to let me shoot it. Definitely sweet shooting rifles. I've been looking for one locally ever since with no luck.

Back in the mid 90s a buddy of mine had a Hakim that he modified a bit. First he cut off the front wood jacket to expose the beautiful blued barrel underneath. Then he mounted a scope mounting plate on the left side of the receiver to which he attached a fairly nice 6-24x50 scope. (The scope was over the top of the gun, not the side, just the mounting plate). Then I told him about an article I had read in Gun world mag or Guns n ammo mag about how to modify an MG15 mag by using a file to fit the 30rd clip into the Hakim. When he was finished, he had an AWESOME looking assault/sniper weapon with a 30rd detachable 8mm clip. I believe the mags can still be had from Sarco

I bought mine way back in 1988, with a coupon from my 1st NRA membership packet for only $189.00 U.S.D. plus shipping to a friend with a C&R lic. I vowed to never sell it...still have it..and seeing this vid for the first time makes me want to get her out and warm her up. SHes' been a safe queen for several years now. Used to hunt deer with it using 186 gr. Winchester soft points...knocks 'em flat. Hits as hard or harder than a 30.06! I concur that the Hakim 8mm is heavy to carry all day but is a very accurate and unique rifle. It don't really need a scope either...shoots great with the irons, as seen here in this vid. I bought 3 crates of Bosnian surplus to feed her back in 2005 when it was still plentiful and relatively cheap. Read it and weep guys! LOL! :-)

YES, been waiting for you to do this gun for a while now. There is very little KZfaq content on the Hakim, and most of it is pretty poor quality shooting vids with no detail/history. There is a good disassembly video or two, though. I saved one of these from a Pawn shop. Someone cut off the end of the muzzle brake and tried to drill and tap the HANDGUARD for a scope. Yeah, the handguard.... I fixed the handguard and replaced a couple parts. The gas valve was stuck wide open. Couldn't get it to move. Had to soak the gas tube in kroil with the gun upside-down for a long time, then get a steel gas key to finally get it to turn. Someone had used a vice grip to adjust it, the triangle was all gnarfed up. The spring that indexes the gas valve was missing too. The pillar sleeves were missing too, so made them out of some stainless tubing. Got all the issues straightened out, so it's good now. Except the muzzle brake, nothing I can do about that. He cut it off right in front of the main body so I still have most of it, but the part where it narrows back down at the tip is gone. The rifle is so fun to shoot. I even shoot lead cast reloads in mine! Beats the hell out of the brass though, even with some rubber fuel line tubing on the deflector. Kind of a pain to clean after shooting corrosive, since you really need to take the gas valve out and clean in there. The tube is stainless so not much worry there, but the gas valve will rust and seize up. I put some anti-seize on it. The front sight on these is quite fat and not great for long distance shooting. It's really easy to swap out, so I would suggest you buy a replacement and file it down to a more narrow post. Then paint it white or something. That might help a good bit for the longer shots, and you can always return it to 100% original condition. I don't think a peep sight on the rear safety mechanism would be stable enough. That base moves around a little bit, at least on mine. You can buy spares though, so why not get one and have someone weld a peep sight on it for you? It's not Bubba when you can reverse it back to all-original condition!

About 6 months ago I was getting a battery for my new weapon light and decided to take the light into Lowe’s with me to make sure I got the right battery. I keep a quick access mini safe in my vehicle because of my state laws, so I went to retrieve my pistol to detach the quick release light.. well I had the slide locked back and in manipulating the pistol without looking because I didn’t want to look suspicious, I managed to hit the slide release. The slide rode forward on a 20lb spring and pinched the tip of my thumb and got stuck. It was just dangling from my finger like you talked about in the video at that was just a little pistol, I can’t imagine doing that with that huge chunky bolt. My skin is crawling thinking about it!

Nice exotics! Thanks for the review, guys! Though I feel sorry for an Egyptian soldier who was trying to reload this gun in a trench under enemy fire... That must have been a Houdini-trick O_o

a 40 minute video of two guys shooting a rifle on a sunny day and enjoying themselves. this needs to be three hours long to fully appreciate the good time being had.

I'd like to see you guys do a Swedish Service rifle episode. If I'm not mistaken you only have 1 Swedish Mauser video posted that was done several years ago. So a Swedish Ljungman/Mauser video would be great.
