Chamber castings can be used for a variety of reasons. The most common use is for determining the caliber of a rifle if the rifle is not marked or the caliber is unknown. You can also measure the chamber casting to check on factors like throat wear, free bore, etc.

Wow, what a helpful technique! Usually stuff like this would sort of intimidate me, but the casting process seems straight-forward enough and I think this would come in handy with a few of my military surplus rifles like my .303 Lee Enfield. Well, with the throat erosion and so forth; I already know what caliber it is, of course.

Thanks very much for this video. I have an Arisaka at the GS's for cleaning and safety check. The person I gave the rifle to thinks it is a type 38 and I think type 99 but he doesn't seem to be able to look at the markings to make a determination but for safety the bore casting is the best way to check.

@rampaginghamster That circular shield is a tool used to take apart the bolt. Yes the m48 had no stock disks but i thought it was just restocked. They're apparently is no chamber markings as they were scrubed and then marked .30. They're would be no markings at all on the "shield". And the belgian mauser has alot of diffrent variations serveral would have been jut like the one in the vid. :)
@rampaginghamster
@rampaginghamster 13 жыл бұрын
@TheBobafett13 What baffles me is the circular "shield" on the stock, if memory serves me right neither of those two (M48 and belgian service rifle) had those. They might have switched the stock though. A close up on the "shield" and chamber markings would answer those questions quickly.

I would say the barrel is not shot out, But rather it was a 7.65 Argentine originally which would measure 0.311 to 0.312 and was re-chambered to 30-06. JMHO

Is the patch you put in the barrel alittle used to basically plug it so it doesn't run down the barrel when u pour it in?
@preluderacer88
@preluderacer88 13 жыл бұрын
@GIDAN2987 I listed that caliber of the ammunition, which is larger than the caliber of the rifle so it can squeeze it through and the rifling gets a good bite into it... However, mausers do not normally shoot .30-06 they shoot 8x57mm. Sooo.. idk i gues it is chambered for a different than normal round.

SAMCO is shipping the Spanish Mausers in the 308 now. Case anyone was waiting or wanted to spend $169 I got a Polish AK with throat erosion, faint rifling, a Romanian welded carrier&piston and a bayonet type 1 that's not Polish. I had to replace all the above. So if anyone wants one of those Century Polish builds, it cost me another $200 plus labor taking barrel off, stripping and headspacing a USA barrel and Parkerize again. And I don't think its 922 compliant, just a trigger and receiver.

I certainly understand how to use cerrosafe in chamber casting BUT, by pouring it into the chamber with a ladle, what happens if some of the cerrosafe enters into the bolt recoil lugs in the front of the action? I would think that that would cause the cerrosafe casting to be unable to be tapped out? Your thoughts on that!!
@txstang84
@txstang84 10 жыл бұрын
He mentioned that in a related video--probably on the right. He does say to try your best not to get it touching the bolt lugs because its a pain to get out...that being said, it does have a very low melting point-if you get the bolt lugs warm enough to melt the alloy, presumably, you'd be fine.

@rampaginghamster no way, the rifle shown is to short and the stock couldnt be correct. The bands are also not correct. The rear sight is also incorrect for a gew98. The reciever has no markings at all. Granted that it could of been scrubbed when it was rechambered. I am 95% sure its not a gew98. My money is still on a reworked m48, or maybe a redone belgian mauser.

Can i replace Cerrosafe with beeswax or candle wax?
@Xr-pd2oi
@Xr-pd2oi 7 жыл бұрын
No. Beeswax and candle wax will shrink way too much when they cool. As it cools the Cerrosafe shrinks at first which allows easy removal, but it expands back up to be the size of the chamber at room temperature. This happens as the metal forms it's crystal structure on cooling. Lead is also not recommended, it melts at a much higher temperature and its size will not be the same size of the chamber at room temperature.

With what you have I'd say use the projectile of a 303 ( I think that was one of the .311) instead of .308, in your 30-06 shells. Might improve accusatory of it. To those that say a 30-06 is a .308 bullet not a .311. In a new 30-06 heck no use .308, but this puppy is already. 311. When your apples become mush make apple pie.
