Primal Ireland - Stories of History & Culture

Күн бұрын

The massacre of Mullaghmast Massacre was the mass killing of between 100 and 400 members of the Gaelic nobility of Ireland by English forces under the ultimate command of Sir Henry Sidney in Mullaghmast, County Kildare in either late 1577 or 1 January 1578. It was one of many attempts to clear the countryside of natives so that new English plantations / settlements could be formed in Ireland.

Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland. This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about their "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe. I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

Gaelic Ireland's demise followed Kinsale in 1601 and the "flight" of the Gaelic Chiefs of Ulster and Connacht in September 1607.

Thanks for the compliment and yes indeed you are correct about the detail of the O'Dempseys, but given the editorial challenge of video running time and the frustrating fact that only 50% of the viewers actually finished this video, you'll have to excuse the omission of the O'Dempseys.

Oh wow...Francis Cosby is actually my ancestor. William Cosby would leave Stradbally Hall in the 1700s and move to New York city. That's basically how that side of the family ended up here in Virginia later.

Wow were the English ever anything but horrible cruel to the Irish without remorse? I am so glad I didn't live in that era! Is it any wonder so many Irish ultimately fled Ireland? They were displaced and impoverished away from their own lands long before the famine!

Let's dissect the "English" a "race" that emerged after the invasion of England by the Franco Normans in 1066, and following the subjugation of the Germanic Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Viking tribes by the same Normans. The "English" are a hybrid mongrel race.

it depends. Norman tradition (invited in by the Irish kings of Leinster) and law tended towards unification, power being aceded to the eldest son. That tradition was inherited by the later English heirs of the Anglo-Norman families. While Irish tradition allowed for kingdoms to be expanded by war then split apart among sons, allowing a new generation of civil war the Norman/english expanded a unified nation until it contained the entire Island of Ireland, bringing peace among what had been ten independent and warring kingdoms. Its notable that when Ireland sought independence they chose to do it by inheriting the unified nation the English had created, not by recreating the original warring factions of the ten Irish kingdoms. Just as they kept the English government with a few changes such as changing the King for a president, otherwise the current nation of Ireland is a cultural and legal copy of England. There was a lot of bloodshed, but the current Government in Dublin agrees that it was worth the price, otherwise they would have reinvested the old Irish Nations and cancelled (English) democratic government. *lights fuse and runs away back under his bridge*

Thanks very much, I used various local history books for my research and due to restrictions on running time had to edit the content, Rory Og was killed about 2 years later in a skirmish in the midlands.
