A different view but the same phenomenal power and precision. You can really hear it in teh audience reaction to this brilliant short program setting them on course for his first and her second OGM. Amazing power skating.

I never saw Rodnina & Zaitsev live but a friend of mine, Andrew Bestwick, who saw them when he competed in the 1978 European Championships in Strasbourg once told me that the first thing you noticed about Rodnina/Zaitsev compared to the other pairs was "speed". They performed their elements and general skating so much faster and smoother than the other pairs and it was this that really set them apart.

npe1 I know exactly what Mr. Bestwick is referring to! Of the pairs I have seen live over the last 40 yeas or so, Rod/Zaits and Vorobieva/Lisovsky stand out in terms of effortlessly fierce speed, thanks primarily to the two Irinas. Valova/Vasiliev came close, but their speed was subtler. Of course, in order to gain such speed in highly controlled ways, exceptional edge quality was an important prerequisite.

@@nondescriptnyc And at the end of this clip, isn't it nice to see a young Tatiana Tarasova waiting for them in the kiss and cry. She truly must be the greatest coach in our sport's history having coached World and Olympic champions in singles, pairs and ice dance and for so many years too.
