Salt Lake City, Utah, USA - 2002 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Irina Slutskaya of Russia did not perform the two triple-triple combinations she had planned. In addition, she had a very rough landing on the triple flip jump. This was enough to place her 2nd in the Free Skate, and thus, losing the Gold Medal to Sarah Hughes of the United States.

Sadly the new system rewards sloppy skating as long as they hit the jumps and turns. It's not about the all around package anymore. Irina was sloppy. This was not Michelle's night. It's scary how close this skating almost took the Gold.

Its likely, many Americans agree with you out of misplaced nationalism which they believe is patriotism. Lots of people agreeing with you doesn't make your point valid. Its doesn't make it true. The new system rewards pushing the limits & refining technique. It rewards all the parts of the sport which make it athletic and I'm perfectly fine with it. I believe its wonderful, after- all, the Olympics is the zenith of sport. That alone, should be the sole focus---the athletic side of the sport. There are many shows & exhibitions where a skater can focus on art & performing. Once a competitive career ends there are tours that cater to honing the art of skating but strong technique will can only be captured during a skater's prime. It won't last. But its the foundation from which a skater can build their art.

I have no proof of this, but I'm guessing Irina's coach told her Michelle had not had a good skate so there was no need to take any unnecessary risks. I'm sure she never dreamed the judges would rank Sarah over her at the Olympics no matter how well Sarah skated. She doesn't look like she was even considering doing those triple-triples, and I think she was so hugely upset at the end because she had to know if she had just done a little more difficult content, the gold would have been hers even with the sloppy triple flip.
@scottw6704
@scottw6704 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine she was thinking, "just slow down everything and don't fall, and you've got it." Unfortunately for her, she didn't have the same technical content as Sarah, and she had a sloppy landing. Months afterwards, Irina said in interviews that it just came down to the judges; she felt she still had deserved that win. I love Irina's fast, powerful skating and had never paid much attention to Sarah, but tonight Irina was slow yet oddly frenetic and it just didn't work. Between eight of the judges, they evened out - it was the Italian judge that nudged Sarah ahead of Irina. And had Michelle not fallen, this miraculous ending would not have even taken place!

Her heart wasn’t in it. Sarah deserved that medal. You don’t judge an Olympics on how different judges decided to view Kristi Yamaguchi’s program against different skaters in 1992-good grief. You just wanted Michelle to win. It is most definitely not who you are competing against. Michelle had to show up and skate like everyone else. She did a much better job in 1998 against Tara, but there can only be one gold. Sometimes I think they should just award three golds so you don’t have this endless snarking afterwards. Michelle did not technically fall in her long; she touched down the ice with her hand. Though Irina did not touch down the ice, she landed severely forward on her flip. Both infractions deserved a deduction. Also, Michelle had two clean lutzes whereas Irina only had one. Michelle two-footed on her first toe-loop whereas Irina two-footed on her second lutz. Two-footing didn't warrant a deduction but was considered an omission. Based on jumps alone --- and the fact that Michelle landed a triple lutz at the second half of the program ---Michelle clearly had more difficult jump content.

I've had a theory for over twenty years now that Michelle would have won the gold here if it weren't for the judging controversy in the pairs competition just a few days earlier. If they had put Michelle second in the long behind Hughes she would have won the gold under these rules, But there would've been another controversy because the public would not have understood why Hughes would have lost despite that electrifying performance which was far better than anyone else's that night... This performance by Slutskaya was really sloppy, uninspired, and slow. I think if there was a mathematical way the judges could have given the silver to Michelle ahead of Irina, they would have. Unfortunately there wasn't and they had to sacrifice the silver medal winner for the gold medal winner.

While I like Irina skating a lot she was very tense and out of place in the FS. The Tosca program didn't make it for me. I think the real issue was her overwhelming over-expression and movement which looks forced and artificial also she didn't perform her jumps as planned so if she didn't hit the jumps, she didn't hold a candle to other skaters. I agree with the ridiculous presentation scores but her SP was amazing, artistic, beautiful, and mature, and was the best I've seen from her. I think she should have gotten a choreographer that could hide her weaknesses while highlighting her strengths.

Totally agree. She needed to skate clean with better landings and a 3-3 to have a shot at beating Hughes in the long. When she makes mistakes on the jumps it hurts her because her skating Doesn't have a whole lot more strengths to get her the high scores she needs. Another good example of that would be at the 2001 world championships. She had one really sloppy landing compared with a mesmerizing performance from Kwan. It was a no brainer.

The only way Sarah Hughes could win the gold medal, which she rightfully deserved for her stellar LP, was if someone else defeated Michelle Kwan in the LP. The only skater who could come close to doing that was Irina. There is NO WAY this mess of a LP beat Michelle, but the judges had to place her ahead of Michelle in order for the rightful skater, Sarah, to win gold. The way the ordinals played out, the judges had to sort of throw Michelle under the bus for Sarah to win. Kwan should have been no lower than silver here, but mathematically, that wasn't possible. A poor music choice for Irina. Her obvious struggle to interpret the music contrasts painfully with her much better presentation in the short program here, and in future seasons, she had better presentation than this in several of her programs, including her 2006 long program. The judges were generous to her on both marks here, especially the presentation mark, to place her above Michelle. It is strange that Irina felt cheated (as she later implied in an interview) after skating a less difficult, and also flawed, performance compared to Sarah's clean performance. She should have considered herself lucky to get the silver.

The judges overcompensated that night because of the pairs scandal that happened a few days before. They were determined to prove to the world how "just" they were, which meant allowing Sarah Hughes to "win" the gold medal despite being 4th after the short. In my humble opinion, the long program ordinals should have been: -Sarah Hughes (5.8, 5.8) -Michelle Kwan (5.6, 5.9) -Sasha Cohen (5.7, 5.7) -Irina Slutskaya (5.7, 5.6)

No. Michelle was 'in the lead' before this skate because Sarah's 4th place short skate + 1st place free skate in total ranked behind Michelle's 1st place short skate + 2nd place (at that moment, before Irina skated) free skate. Once Irina skated and the judges ranked her 2nd in free, that bumped Michelle down to 3rd. I know this is probably going to be a controversial opinion, but I think the judges got it right that night. Sarah truly had everything that night. But I'm focusing on Michelle and Irina, not Sarah. And as unpleasant as Irina's free skate was, I still would have placed her ahead of Michelle. While Irina was clearly not equal to Michelle in terms of artistry (which we all agree on.), I thought her technical skate was stronger than Michelle. Irina's skate was flawed, Michelle did have bigger mistakes, like double-footing her 3-Toe/3-Toe combo and falling on the Flip. And Irina double-footing her Flip landing forward on her Toe Loop (which is more of a "quality deduction" than an actual deduction). And while I think Michelle's "Scherezade" program was beautiful, Sarah Kawahara's choreography has never been known for its difficulty or very challenging. And in terms of technique, Michelle's long was the least difficult of the top 3 women.

They didn't want another scandal after all the broo hah over the pairs and they know the dumb as hammers general skating audience would not get things like factored points or too far back after the short, etc...Of course if Sarah had been lower than 4th in the short as she also should have been it would now have been impossible to find a way to give her the gold overall anyway.

This is another one, where the presentation score is so OFF you just know something fudgey is happening with the judging. (1998 was another example). NO WAY this should have earned 5.9s in presentation, it was a hot mess..Cohen and Kwan were both superior. Not even a nationalistic viewpoint as I thought Hughes was also worse than both artistically and even her technical scores for all the triples don't hold up over time (seeing how UR, wrong edge, etc).

I'm not a certified judge by any means but I would have put Cohen and Kwan ahead of her. Her strength is supposed to be technical Merit... she needed to be clean and she made mistakes. She made mistakes, she skated slower than usual and was sloppy. Most judges would prefer a clean technical program or a beautifully artistic program. Irina normally had a fantastic technical program but she didn't show it here tonight. I love Irina, but she was not clean here AND she did not have the technical content (which she normally would have had if you've been keeping up with her skating over the years) AND she was arguably the least artistic of the four on this night. She favored technical as usual but she didn't have the clean technical program she needed to win.

Landing errors-two foot landing on one of her triples, scratchy/sloppy and pitched forward on another, sloppy 3-2-2, ZERO 3-3 combinations, lacking her typical speed, playing it safe and conservative holding back rather than tapping into her typical power, speed and attack, disjointed choreography consisting of arm waving, posing, and very little emotional connection to the music, performance, or the audience. She wasn’t trying to win, she was trying not to loose. Had she committed to her technical prowess without holding back and gone for the triple triples we know she was capable of (triple lutz triple rittberger instead of triple double) with her typical powerful speed, even keeping the choreo and performance exactly as she did here-literally just increasing her speed and her 3-3’s with clean landings, then she would have won the gold medal without a doubt. She was capable of more than she gave-she held back and played it safe, leaving the door open for her to be surpassed, which is exactly what happened. She really failed to tap into her strengths and elements that set her apart from her competitors, unfortunate because she had the talent and the strength. Her style of skating needed her to attack and go for it, not hold back.
