Ancient Greece didn’t have access to sugar cane or sugar beets, but it did have TONS of bees, so the Greeks used honey to sweeten everything. These desserts date thousands of years, unlike most Northern European desserts which mostly date to the 1700 and 1800s, after sugar became available.

However baklava and galaktobourelo have Turkish names and origins in the middle east and ancient Greeks did not consume much of Nutella or oranges.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 ай бұрын
@@manost3239 While Baklava does have Turkish roots, Glaktoboureko is 100% Greek. Also, oranges are quite common in Greece, it being a Mediterranean country. As for Nutella, the pastry can be filled with all kinds of fillings. It’s 21st century. Either way, you completely miss the point of explaining why honey is used.

@@afcgeo882 Galaktoboureko has it's origins in the ottoman empire. It's second part of the word comes from the Turkish "börek" which refers generally to pastries/pies. Oranges were not known to ancient Greeks. The cultivation of oranges in the Mediterranean countries started in the 15th century AC. Although honey was used in ancient Greece, the fact is that the desserts of the video have absolutely nothing to do with ancient greek cuisine.
@afcgeo882

@@manost3239 You need to learn the difference between the history of the dish and the history of its name (etymology). The dish is ancient Greek, but its name was influenced by Turkish during the Ottoman Empire days. It’s also why this dish now exists in Albania, Macedonia, etc. Greeks ABSOLUTELY knew about oranges. Just as you’ve said, since the introduction of oranges from China in the 15th century, oranges have been widely known and cultivated in the entire region. That’s 6 centuries of food development. Pizza is Italian, despite tomatoes only being introduced to Europe in the 15th century. You’re letting your bias cloud your intellect.

Greek here! All those pastry desserts with the syrup belong to a specific category of desserts called Syropiasta (=the "syrupy" ones). You are supposed to have one (warm preferably) piece, not 3 in the row, as they are really heavy! I felt sick watching you eating all this syrup!! 😅 You should try other stuff too, more traditional and not "syrupy" like melomakarona, kaltsounia and amygdalota. ❤

I absolutely agree, that is the traditional of eating if I am not mistaken. I like all these people even though I've never met any of them in person. The video that drove me up a wall however was the sushi one Paddy was just butchering a part of a roll ...with a fucking fork. He was trying to cut in half. If you don't know how to use chopsticks, that's fine. I'm a big round eye American and I taught myself when I was a kid. It's perfectly acceptable to use your hands, but it's made to be eaten in one mouthful. No I still cant get over that one, these many years later. I'm an asshole that way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@nikosanag
@nikosanag 2 ай бұрын
Greek here. It is true, it is quite similar but bougatsa is almost identical to a pastel de nata. Bougatsa (with cream) is also semolina custard wrapped in phyllo pastry, usually cut in small pieces and topped with icing sugar and cinnamon. Galaktoboureko is soaked in syrup, unlike pasteis and bougatsa and usually the custard to phyllo ratio is much higher. There are also savoury versions of bougatsa, filled with cheese, spinach or minced meat. Returning from Lisbon, I wanted to pack a suitcase full of pasteis to bring back home!

Hello Éire🇮🇪 from Hellas🇬🇷 Yes, we both have altered names in English… Glad that you like some of our desserts! Most of them, as you saw, are full in syrup. That’s because they are quite old desserts! They date back centuries… nowadays European people are more familiar with desserts that appeared later in history after we started using sugar and chocolate. Our traditional desserts go fitter back in history and they contain more simple ingredients, fruits and syrup. Of course syrup is now made with sugar but back then it was made by boiling honey and water until thickened. *Baklavàs* Baklavàs is one of those desserts. Many Arab counties also have this dessert but the turks are claiming its invention…😂 Let’s settle this: I don’t know the Arab History of the dessert but we 🇬🇷 have found written proof of recipes that were made back in ancient Hellas. It was recorded in History that Kings were served a special dessert made by many layers of phyllo, filled with walnuts and chestnuts and served with honey syrup. This is the origin of 🇬🇷baklavàs! Turks came form Central Asia! They didn’t had desserts! They adopted this dessert from the Arabs! As Darren said, in turkey today they made this baklava but it’s quite heavy. They are making it using (I believe) cow’s butter. And they also use pistachios. We 🇬🇷 don’t use animal products in Baklava! We are making it with lighter vegan butters and oil. And we always use walnuts or chestnuts (depending on the region). That’s why ours 🇬🇷 is lighter and tastier and theirs is heavier. *Portokalòpita* Another syrupy and fruit flavoured dessert. We have a lot more… karydòpita which is syrupy, darker cake with walnuts. Loukoumàdes, melomakàrona, saraglí… *Galaktompoùreko* Syrup again… 😒😂 You either live or hate it. This custard with semolina inside isn’t for everyone. I personally hate it but… 🤷🏻‍♂️ *Kouloùri with praline* This is obviously a modern dessert. Like many modern recipes that contain chocolate. The others are old traditional desserts.

We have written proofs that this dessert was served to kings here CENTURIES before your arrival here! If your brain is working try to use it! We have many turkic names for places, foods etc because of the 400++ years of ottoman occupation of our country! We were forced to use these terms. That doesn’t mean anything for the origin of some things… Use it 🧠 ⚙️ 💡

@@Kolious_Thrace how? Can people from Central Asia live without foods? Baklava is a Turkish dessert that is thousands of years old and is also made in other Turkic countries. Your so-called “Greek” cuisine consists of 90% Turkish dishes. yoghurt, baklava, tzatziki, gyros (doner), moussaka, revani, kadayifi, dolma-des, lokma-des and this list goes on.
@georgiad.1038

We have adopted a lot of words from the turkish language due to the ottoman rule tha lasted 4 centuries. So it s very normal and expected that food and recipies also got exchanged. Most syrupy desserts are greek or if you like byzantine and there is historical proof. When it comes to othes main dishes and sides yes the origins may be turkish or anatolian(persian armenian etc). When there are cultures that existed for millenias its most probable that linguistic and dietary mix ups happen. The thing is that no one knows the actual recipe for any of those as the didnt keep cookbooks back then and every household made their own alterations to them .

Baklava & the wedding cookies , now them are some of the best Greek desserts ever .

I had a friend, long ago, who was a choco-holic. I wanted to get him some chocolate baklava for his birthday and couldn't find anyone -- in Houston! -- who made it. So, I made some myself. It is the most involved dessert I've ever made!

@@vickiefowler1429 ah, well, not really baklava then, no wonder they wouldn't....I'd say, with walnuts and pastry and chocolate, check maybe with a German or Polish place

@@LindaC616 ... I don't know... it still had all the honey syrup, nuts and phyllo dough layers, just like regular baklava... only with melted chocolate added to the layers. The recipe called it chocolate baklava and I came across some at a Greek restaurant years later in another state.

Greece has wonderful food but even more wonderful is their love their respect their hospitality and how they make love is what stands out cause its pure authentic and primally essential sort to speak regarding you find the ones that are at least of glorious warlord genetical heritage and those genes are not just physical but spiritual too........ so good luck finding them too............

You should try all of these desserts at a warm temperature. Especially the orange pie, with some vanilla ice cream on the side. And definitely should try the last one (koulouri) plain, without nutella. It's perfect for breakfast with some milk, coffee, tea, etc

You dont know nothing...., maybe you are not Greek...many recipes is from byzantine empire, that means Greek , after the 1453 when the otoman s came ,all the Turkish people , who is from mogoluabmother land ,they take byzantine recipes , and today they say is Turkish....ThiS is the truth..the others is bullshit , the 80% from Turkish recipes is Byzantune recipes.

Baklava is not greek, its turkish, but we eat it a lot in greece. And i wouldnt count koulouri with nutella as a greek desert. Its just something random, cause we like putting nutella (or the greek one called Merenda) on everything. You missed the best one though, Melomakarona! :)
