In the US, we don't call something a "burger" unless it has a patty made of ground meat, usually beef, hence why a bun with fried chicken on it is a "chicken sandwich" and not a "chicken burger" but you will absolutely hear Americans mention a "turkey burger", which is a burger with a patty made of ground turkey.

@@suzannahstan no, so the reason why they are called burger in Europe is because of the united states. so here in the United States, a Walter Anderson created the Burger Bun in Kansas. Burgers in the united states is grounded up meat formed into a patty. chicken burgers are rare here in the united states. now, we exported our Burger buns to Europe. really we just had our companies build them over there. they labeled them as burger buns. so Europeans not knowing what a Burger is assumed that burger is any sandwich. remember Wisconsin was where the term Hamburger originates from. europeans didn't use that term until our bread came over. they used our burger buns for all sanwhiches, which is why they call sandwiches burgers. to them it's about the bread, while to us it's about the meat.

In America a burger is the entire sandwich - ground protein, bun, toppings, etc. There are chicken burgers, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, turkey burgers, veggie burgers. A chicken sandwich is one which has an unground cut of chicken meat as the protein.

As others have pointed out, the "Burger" naming is often rooted in the form the meat takes. Consider these: Patty Melt = Ground meat patty with melted cheese between grilled sandwich bread slices Hamburger = Ground beef patty with a soft bun Chicken Burger = Ground chicken patty grilled with a soft bun Chicken Sandwich = Grilled or Fried boneless chicken (not ground) using any kind of bread-like holder

"Burgers" in the United States, are something made with ground meat (usually beef, but could be other meats such as turkey, chicken, pork, or even lamb.) To be a burger, the meat needs to be ground or minced. Then the cooked patty of meat on a bun is also called a burger. If there is any other form to the meat (steaks, whole or breaded chicken, thin sliced beef or pork, etc) then it is a sandwich.

Exactly. You can have a steak burger, made from ground steak. Or a steak sandwich made with a filet of steak. Same for chicken, pork, etc. Needs to have a patty to be called a burger. I challenge some of the comments about American naming. The difference between sandwich and burger is not protein, it’s whether it’s ground meat or not. A turkey sandwich is turkey meat, not ground, but a turkey burger does exist and is ground meat. Also, steak sandwiches exist as well, and that would be beef but not ground. In fast food stores, chicken sandwiches are usually a chicken breast, hence sandwich.

The American distinction of burgers vs sandwiches is minced meat vs unminced meat (maybe sliced or formed (like a hot dog). When with minced beef and the bread to handle the protein is not a hamburger bun of some variety as a burger bun, then THAT sandwich is called a Patty Melt. If not a burger or a patty melt, all other protein based sandwiches are sandwiches (like a hoagie, submarine, hot dog,, etc). Sandwich is the category of food. In it are subcategories... Beef and everything else. Within beef subcategory...there are two tertiary classes...burgers & patty melts. If a sandwich is not in burger or patty melt category, then it's in the general sandwich category that catches all other possibilities.

You’re a bit off on patty melts. A patty melt is a very specific kind of sandwich made with a griddled ground beef patty, not just any beef patty sandwich not on a bun. Regardless of what Whataburger and some other restaurants think, a patty melt requires rye bread, grilled onions and cheese - preferably Swiss. Beef patties served on Texas toast, sourdough slices or even sandwich bread slices (as does one of the oldest hamburger shops, Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, CT) are still hamburgers, not patty melts.

0:26 @Ciara & @Dermot: in my opinion, if you grind up the chicken meat and then form it into a burger patty, it would be called a burger. Chicken 'sandwiches' here (USA) usually have whole pieces that are breaded and fried and put into the sandwich. i guess that means if you put whole pieces of beef, or a small steak, in a bun or bread, that would be called a beef sandwich and not a burger.

In the US, inventor of the iconic “burger” the only thing that’s a burger is made of ground beef, everything else is a sandwich. Whether it be chicken, shredded beef, pork etc is a sandwich.

I'm going to try and explain the American difference between a burger and a sandwich. When you take the meat and grind it up and make patties it is a burger (hamburger, chicken burger turkey burger) but if you don't grind up the meat and make patties it is a sandwich (steak sandwich, chicken sandwich). There is a method to our madness. Thank you very much.

Seattle USA here, most people around here would call em chicken sandwiches, but if you said a chicken burger, most people would know what you're talking about. Burgers here tend to imply the meat (or bean/veggie/etc) to be in a patty form (ground usually). So, keep callin em burgers and keep up the good vids!

For non US people here is how it works in the US. The only time you get a chicken burger is when you use ground chicken , the same can be said for ground turkey. Turkey and chicken burgers exist in the US here but only if the meat is ground. For example if you cook a piece of beef and make a sandwich and it's not ground meat it's then called a steak sandwich.

The "hamburger sandwich" was a Hamburg steak(ground beef) on bread or toast, later put on a bun. So a hamburger is a ground beef patty on a bun with condiments. The rest is all sandwiches. Oddly, the rest of the world saw the large bun with condiments and meat and thought that is a hamburger. In Pakistan their "hamburger" is a French roll with a Dal Patty and some salad and sauce.

Chicken is my favourite animal to eat. Irish chicken burgers are sacred. I would be so unhappy if I was only ever served one half of one. The Cheese Louise looked very tempting. But overall, I would much prefer a plain chicken sandwich over a burger.

Yeah, in America, it's a burger if the meat is Ground or Minced as you would call it! If the Meat is in its original state, it's a Sandwich! For example! whole chicken breast is a chicken sandwich, ground Turkey is a Turkey burger!

A chicken burger in Anerica is ground or minced chicken formed into a patty like a hamburger. A whole piece of chicken on any kind of bread is a chicken sandwich.

As far as burgers go, the basic necessity is that it uses a ground meat patty instead of several slices (like a roast beef sandwich) or a single cutlet (like a fried chicken sandwich). The bun really isnt too important since the original hamburger was served on sliced bread. If the chicken was ground up and formed into a patty before being cooked, its a burger; if its just one large hunk of chicken meat like a breast or something, its a sandwich. This goes all the way back to before the burger was a sandwich and was eaten by itself as the Hamburg steak which was made of ground beef, not just a single un-ground steak.

In the US, the term "burger" is used to describe a ground meat patty (or meat substitute, these days). We have hamburgers (ground beef), turkey burgers, bison burgers, Impossible burgers (meatless), chicken burgers (ground chicken), etc. You can get a burger served on a bun, in lettuce (for the keto crowd), in a wrap, etc. We call a breaded and deep-fried or grilled chicken breast served on a bun a chicken sandwich.

For Americans in order to be a burger it has to be ground/minced. We have both chicken burgers and chicken sandwiches. We have turkey burgers and turkey sandwiches. We also eat veggie burgers, lamb burgers and so on.

If it's a patty on a bun, it's a burger, no matter what it's made of. Hence, chicken burger, bean burger, salmon burger, etc. If it's pieces, like chicken or fish fillets, or slabs of beef or lamb, slices of turkey, or even tofu, on a bun, it's a sandwich. If it's ground up in a sauce, and spooned onto a bun, it's a Sloppy Joe, which is usually made of beef. If it's on slices of bread, it's a sandwich, although, if it's a patty, some people would still call it a burger. If it's on a long roll, it's a hoagie or a sub (I'm sure there are other names) depending on where you live. If you're in New Orleans, I believe anything on a long roll is called a Po Boy. Of course, I may be wrong about the last one!

Actually, Americans will call it a burger IF the meat was ground first, then made into a patty … if the meat is whole, shredded, cubed, sliced, etc., then it’s a sandwich. That’s the distinction.
@davidreed9615

Yes! It is all about if the meat is ground / minced or not; that is how we Americans associate the name "burger". If you grind up venison, we would call that a Deer Burger. Ground Buffalo = Bison burger. Ground up Alligator? We would undoubtedly call that a Gator burger. If it comes any other way than ground, it will almost assuredly be a sandwich to the US.
