For their defense, series have gotten waaaay better over the years, we make series the same way we make movies now, it wasn't the case before netflix, HBO, Disney and so on...

they mentioning Assayas (on IMDB at least) in the cast as creator (based on the motion picture by), but the main question remains unanswered - why then they decided to not make the main character asian as in the original?

It’s Lars Eidinger - one of the biggest actors in Germany 😁 and by far one of the best, saw him in Berlin in „Hamlet“ on stage, it was awesome!

interestingly Irma Vep (1996) is the story of a movie crew remaking the 1915, 10 parts movie called "les vampires" (7h20 total runtime) that makes it a double embedded story

This is a remake of that, which is a satire about a director making a remake of the original silent film. Back in 1996, they had Maggie Chung, another exotic female from a different culture playing the lead actress. I am afraid this might be a few layers of meta too much.

honestly I thought it was terrible at first too but it’s oddly entertaining as you said, and probably just reallyyy different than other shows for me to be able to label it as “good”. like, I’m not so film-educated that I can positively label a good series if it is completely different from a generic one I’m used to. so I have no idea what to think of it from an objective standpoint, but I am absolutely only watching for mira and laurie 😋
