That day, I was at the Yamaha Building in Ikebukuro, Japan. Suddenly Maiden came to the store and I was surprised. Steve and Paul started a rifle shooting arcade game. Paul abandoned the game and went to the studio. Steve nominated me as his successor. I was nervous and couldn't hit even one shot. The band then wrote an autograph on my denim jacket. They were very cool and nice guys. That is a good memory of 1981.

@@cosmicman621No, definitely never considered punk at the time, but undoubtedly punk was an influence. The proof is in the pudding. The rawness, aggression, and energy levels on this era of Maiden betray any anti-punk sentiment Steve may have ever expressed. Paul made it clear several times in interviews that he came from a punk background, and though Clive never really came out and said it, he really had a punk style of drumming to go with his obvious Ian Paice influence. Maybe it was unintentional and indirect, but punk definitely rubbed off on them to a certain extent. At least during the Paul/Clive era it did.

@Shikta-poobah67
@Shikta-poobah67 7 ай бұрын
Even though this predates the whole “crossover” thing by something like 4 or 5 years, I think this is a much better example of how to mix the two genres properly, and with the right factors. I’m coming from the perspective of someone who was born in the 60’s, grew up on a steady diet of hard rock as a kid in the 70’s, and then dove headfirst into punk at the turn of the decade ‘79-‘80. Back then it was dangerous to like both punk and metal at the same time. The two camps hated each other and would regularly fight violently with each other… which was completely stupid and made very little sense, but that’s just how it was. I went full on punk in the summer of 1980. Cut my hair short, hacked up all my shirts, stencil-sprayed slogans all over my clothes etc, and then I went to go see Iron Maiden open for Judas Priest in the summer of ‘81. I thought for sure I would probably get jumped by a pack of heshers but I didn’t care. I just really wanted to see Maiden. Anyway, no one jumped me. Got a few heckles, but nothing to sweat over. Maiden were even better than I expected, and I also happened to see a few other punks at that show, which was an odd thing to see in 1981 at a big metal concert. Whether it was their intention or not (my money’s on ‘not’), Maiden were one of the first metal bands to tear down those barriers and unite punks and metalheads. Motörhead was another. Still, we had a long way to go before the truce was called… but Maiden was way ahead of the curve.

@@m42037What Steve did to Clive was inexcusable. He still has never come clean about that. He added insult to injury by smearing Clive’s name in the press, saying that he was fired for “partying too much”, when really it was because Clive chose to attend his own father’s funeral and cancel one or two dates on their tour. Then Maiden gets huge, and Clive is tossed out like yesterday’s garbage. Unforgivable.

Yep. Maiden… and I mean primarily this era of Maiden… was a game changer. I bought Killers right when it came out, and I vividly remember putting it on my turntable (yes I’m a relic) and thinking to myself “this is a whole new kind of metal”. Not only did it sound light years newer than the old guard (Sabbath, Purple, Uriah Heep, UFO, etc), but it sounded even like a departure from most of it’s NWOBHM peers. It set the standard for all 80’s metal to come, though no one ever improved upon it. Not even Iron Maiden themselves.

Yeah I saw them on this tour, maybe a month after this Japanese tour, in Houston TX opening for Judas Priest, and though that was a lifetime ago, I can clearly remember that Paul was in top shape. Whatever was going on after the gig didn’t seem to be affecting their performance, but I only saw the one gig, so who knows. Even Paul himself has admitted he had a bit of a problem at the time. It was really too bad. I would have loved to have heard what Number would have sounded like with Paul singing. Now Clive… that was a whole different story. What Steve pulled on him was simply unforgivable. Clive got severely f’d over.

I saw them on that same tour. June ‘81 in Houston. Humble Pie was also on the bill, but I missed their set. No offense to Halford and co., but Maiden pretty well blew Priest off the stage that night. Don’t get me wrong, Priest were great as always, but Maiden were younger, hungrier, more high-energy, and raw. There was an obvious “old guard/new guard” difference between the two. Then Paul was fired, and shortly afterwards Clive was fired, and they kind of became a different thing. However that night in summer ‘81 they were a real force to be reckoned with.

Holy shit this is great! Maiden at their absolute pinnacle, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t hate what they did later on, but nothing could touch this lineup at this particular moment in time. I saw them right around this time, about a month later. More on that later. They were young, hungry, focused, and ferocious. Tight as hell, and the energy levels are just through the roof. Perfect marriage of punk rawness and metal chops. This was the new metal sound in the very early 80’s. Just amazing stuff. And Clive…. WOW. Simply the best. RIP. As an American, I know just exactly how lucky I am that I got to see this lineup at this time, opening for Judas Priest, at the Sam Houston Coliseum - Houston - June ‘81. Humble Pie was the first band to go on, but I missed their set (according to what I heard, I didn’t really miss anything). Maiden blew me the f*** away. Really scorched my face off. At that time I was getting heavily into punk, and in those days being a punk at a metal gig could get you hospitalized. I’m not even kidding. The lines of division were drawn deep before ‘crossover’ became a thing a few years later. However Maiden smashed that barrier down. I wasn’t the only punk at that gig. In fact, this era of Iron Maiden was somewhat of an influence on the more hardcore punk bands… even if Steve Harris claims that he always hated punk and wanted nothing to do with it.

Maiden played 'Strange World' only twice during this tour, but recordings of this song from these two shows are completely the same! There must be some mistake and only one recording exists.

Paul Di'Anno's Iron Maiden, the ultimate in Punk Metal mayhem. When you have members of parliament complaining about your band in the House of Commons you know you've done something right :) . We'll never see their likes again, far better than the Sex Pistols and I love the Sex Pistols.

Bruce is both. A Pilot too and a lot of other things. It's ironic that your name is a song with Bruce and not with Paul and you're saying that. Paul and Bruce are both excellent and deserve to be respected. Stop fighting this kind of fandom is toxic. Steve Harris has said in several ocassions that everything is good with Paul and the band, so stop comparing them.

@@NoNameUwUxX If Steve said all is good with Paul why did he fire him and not give him a second chance? And EXPECIALLY Clive!! His father died and Clive wanted time away to be with family and Steve asked him to step away, we got Nicko to take over! I think he was a complete a$$hole back then, today he's different as you know paying for Paul's medical bills, and yes he did benefits for Clive when his MS bills got way more than him and his mum (or sister idr) could afford, hell that's the least he could do after stabbing Clive in the back. Edit: Oh and I don't want to hear the bs rumors about Clive's "indulgence's" , puke bucket nonsense, etc. Clive said it's not true at all. Bruce even said he didn't like the way the Clive thing went down, and that he was the best drummer Maiden ever had. Adrian to this day still lucks Steve's ass and says about Clive that "some guy's can't keep up with the rock n roll lifestyle" sad he was a roommate of his early in the day. Either he's got a bad memory or he doesn't want any bad words about Steve from 30 year's ago

The pure raw Maiden, before they started writing more 'radio friendly' songs. Don't get me wrong, they have made great songs after Paul left, but this is something else in a better way.
