I was pretty obsessed with Iron Maiden for a bit in college when I first discovered them. Their album "Killers" is great!

Hi JP thanks for the shout out , this is epic maiden, this was the first track that new drummer. Nicko MC brain drummed on and he is still the drummer to this day , excellent intro to this song and Steve Harris ( bass and band founder ) often says this was his favourite album the last song on the album --- to tame a land __ is an epic that was inspired by the DUNE books . definitely give to tame a land a listen .

My parents were pretty cool. I didn’t have to hide this album or listen to it with headphones. I cranked it loud and proud (my bedroom was on the opposite side of the house). This is one of the few albums that I liked so much that I had to learn to play it on guitar from start to finish. This is a great track, too! 🤟 Iron Maiden was the third iteration of my musical learning obsession (first was Black Sabbath, then Led Zeppelin). I couldn’t get enough of Iron Maiden back in the day.

I love that you did a less frequently reacted -to song. Great track. I think I wore my brother's POM cassette out, literally. Interesting fact, that opening drum riff is actually an homage to the opening drum riff by Cozy Powell in Rainbow's "Stargazer."

Great band, great track. I always thought Iron Maiden to be on the progressive side of metal, or am I stating the obvious, ha. Whatever, gotta love Maiden!! Bassist Steve Harris' fave Tull album is "A Passion Play"!

try Pat Travers (with Peter Mars Cowling and Nico McBrain) rocking the Funk out on "Life in London" (from Putting it Straight) in 1977 Or from 1976, the awesome Need Love from Makin Magic. Both albums with Nico McBrain on drums. For even more awesome quartet Wok with Aplomb , try Pat Travers Band's 1978 bombastic "Heat in the Street" , this time with Tommy Aldridge and Peter MARS Cowling challenging the two Patricks , Travers and Thrall, to a trip into Grooveville that had many thinkin that they would never ever Return. This? not my style really. I danced to a fab cover of "Teenage Dirtbag" by the Afterhours at my sons wedding on Thursday though. I think I've lost my dancin skills , unless u call Tilted Hip Pogo-ing stylistically nuanced though. "Parents" by Budgie is the perfect antidote to all this. There u go JP, too many recommendations as usual but strategically placed on a bike passing in the Back Mirror stylee that only some people notice. True Man.

I had to laugh at your "Mom wouldn't let me buy it" comment, since in my case, I actually bought it WITH my mom when I was 11 years old. Was my first heavy metal album too. Before there was only Shakin' Stevens and David Bowie (still a huge Bowie fan). I guess, if my mother had known what kind of music she would have to endure blasting out of my room from then on she might have thought twice about it. 😁

I was more of a prog rock fan during this album's release but I wanted (as a music fan) to experience a metal show and had heard a bit of these guys so I went to see them and wow-they were so good. It was the tour for this album and what struck me immediately was that I had never heard drums miked up and amplified the way they did for this guy. It was incredible, every time he hit a drum head it sounded like a gun shot. Clean, crisp and ear splitting...but as a fan of drums it was bliss. Bruce's vocals need no raves, he was off the rails in his wailing. But those drums were the highlight and that's no disrespect to the bass and guitar which were very good as well. My ears rang for a week afterwards but it was worth it. Definitely the loudest show I ever saw.

If you're curious about their cover of Cross-Eyed Mary, Justin, you should react to it. 😉 Both Bruce and Steve are huge Tull fans, with Bruce even going so far as to appear in one of Ian Anderson's shows to sing a few songs with him and his band.

If your doing songs off of this album (Piece of Mind) might I suggest my favorite song off of this record, which is also the last song on the album. "Die With Your Boots On" it's the best song on the whole album next to "The Trooper" as far as I'm concerned.

Nico tells a story about this track. When he first was hired into Iron Maiden and was about to play his first show he was nervous and a bit intimidated by the drum part on this song. He was confident he could do it but it was the show opener and he would rather have a chance to ease into playing tackling it later in the show. He actually asked Steve Harris if they would move Where Eagles Dare was in the setlist. Of course Steve let him know if he was going to be in this band he'd have to drive right in. He did and of course the rest is history as he has been Maiden's drummer since but I thought that was a funny story. btw, Godspeed to Nico who is back after recently suffering a stroke.

I bought this the day it was released in 83. I was 19. We used to listen to album over and over, front to back while we drank lots and lots of beer. Ah, to be young and dumb again. I treasure those days. Where eagles Dare Kicked off and album Which I think was Iron Maiden's last truly great album. Cuz I though most if not all their subsequent albums became bloated, too long and mostly filler. Damn that production sounds so airy, but so heavy. I love the guitar tone on this album. I recently read that Nico McBrain had a stroke back in January. Get well soon Nico. Fun song, fun reaction.

This album is peak maiden. If you ever decide to do a full Iron Maiden album listen, make it this one. Nicko's first album with the band and imo where he did his best work. Maiden's early work has always had a semi hidden prog metal edge to it and Piece Of Mind and Powerslave bring it out the most. Incredibly tight and just pumping iron front to back.

If you haven't seen it before, I'd recommend doing a search for an image of the inside cover of this album. It would be a "spoiler" to tell you why, so I have to just settle for trying "Just do it". Songs with settings in WW2 have been part of Iron Maiden from very early on. This one started as an Allistair Maclean novel, that got pruned down into a movie not long after it was published. Just in case you missed this bit of lore (I'm guessing not, but as my older cousins used to often tell me, "Do you know what Thought did?" - and then after a pause, "Thought thought he farted, but he shat in his pants".) er , Lore. The skeleton guy's name is Eddie. That's it. His name is Eddie. Their war songs have developed to have more to them over the years. A good example is the recent *Paschendale* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZhgYMmexL2ylas.html

I'm not a fan of heavy metal, but I occasionally give songs like this a listen to see if my ears have warmed to it. I enjoyed the drumming and the guitars were OK, still not very fond of Dickinson's voice, too much vibrato for my taste. I wouldnt listen again, but not unpleasant for me.

A good, solid, Maiden song with their characteristic sound. But maybe not their most exciting, and perhaps a little long due it's repetitive nature. Re other comments of you maybe finishing an album (cos you do seem to leapfrog), I'd recommend returning to Number of the Beast. One top album. Up the Irons...

I could never stand the annoying voice of Bruce Dickinson, Moreover, musically, I find it boring and predictable, so for me Iron Maiden comes down to their first two albums with Paul Di'Anno and that's it.

@@MrCREWCRUSHIN95 I really don't care if my opinion is in the minority, I still think that Bruce Dickinson's voice is appalling. The voice of Paul Di'Anno has nothing exceptional in itself, however it is much more bearable to me.

I used to hang out and drink with these guys. We all drank in the Ruskin Arms, and I must have seen them live 30 times before they "made it"....I even played football ⚽️ with Stevie Harris for a local amateur team (Melbourne FC) and he was as good at that as he is on the bass!!! They were all really humble decent guys. I agree with you about the first two albums......I met Bruce when he was in the band Samson when they were supporting Iron Maiden and it was obvious he was going to join them. He too is an amazingly humble bloke. Best thing is they have ALL stayed true rockers and stayed decent blokes. Up the Irons⚒️⚒️⚒️
