You might have missed it, but the arc reactor blueprints that Ivan Vanko was working from at the beginning of the movie were labeled "Project designer: Anton Vanko - Howard Stark". Ivan's father was the co-creator of arc reactor technology, but he couldn't build a working one without Howard' Stark's help (and the same was true of Howard- they were both limited by the technology of their time). That's why he was telling Ivan "that should be you" when he saw Tony on TV.

Tony is largely based on Howard Hughes, a wealthy inventor/pilot in the mid 20th century known for being a womanizer, but who had a lot of personal demons. The senate hearing is based on a real life event where Hughes was brought before the US Senate to answer questions about his business practices. Much as Stark does here, Hughes mocked the senator questioning him, dominated the hearing with his big personality, and won over public opinion. I've heard that Tony's messy behavior at his party is based on the "Demon in a bottle" storyline from the comic from the 70's, which deals with Tony having a drinking problem.

I had my doubts about Cheadle playing Rhodey. Not just the replacing the actor, as I understand that, but I picture Rhodey as a big tough buy, and didn't see Cheadle as that. However I now see it as perfect casting.

there is a theory that Stane was actually part of Hydra and that within Hydra many referred to Tony as "that little prick" and that throughout the MCU whoever refers to Tony as a "little prick" is hydra.

That upgraded Ironman suit is called War Machine.

Definitely check out the deleted scenes to Iron Man 2 on the Blue-Ray. There is an alternate and longer intro sequence that was filmed but cut, which goes _right before_ the scene where Tony jumps out of the plane and into the Expo (the scene the theatric cut of the movie begins with); originally, the movie was supposed to open with the reveal that Tony was slowly being poisoned by the device in his chest, as we see him aboard the plan puking his guts out and looking like absolutely hell. He dopes himself with medication to be able to do that "cool entrance" stunt at the Expo. It completely changes the context and mood of the following Expo scene and exposes Tony's audacious entrance as pure showmanship for the cameras while in reality he's already extremely ill at that point. Sadly, the director decided to cut that scene either for time reasons or, I suspect, to start the movie with a cool bang instead of showing the titular character as extremely frail and sick. But I think it was to the detriment of Tony Stark's presentation to the audience... in the theatrical cut, the audience's initial impression is only what the public gets to see of Tony: the cool, reckless, edgy Tony Stark who preens for the cameras. The reveal that he's at death's door is postponed to much later in the movie.

It must be awesome to see the MCU movies for the first time, you'll enjoy I hope.

When they tried to cut his pay for this film he bowed out, and was replaced by Don Cheadle. There were reports of them cutting his screen time as well.

I fully admit that the first Iron Man is a more important movie, but I like this one more. It is my favorite of the first five movies and of the Iron Man standalone movies.

They're not necessary, but you could watch the "MARVEL one-shots". They were a little thing they did early on in the MCU. They're 10 - 15 minute short films about a character to give them a little extra fleshing out. There's one that shows that something happens to Agent Coulson on his way to the Mexican site/Thor's hammer aka Mjolnir. The one after IM3 is a little more important, actually. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff to this MCU...stuff.

Black Widow was definitely a badass in this film, and she went on to become one of my favourite MCU characters, but I wish this film had done more for her character tbh. A lot of ppl consider Black Widow & Hawkeye less interesting/ weaker than the other Avengers, so I wish the earlier films had done more to help them reach their full potential/ showcase their characters tbh.

Whiplash was an Iron Man villain in the '60s comics. Mickey Rourke wasn't happy about his limited screen time but he did a good job.

The second Iron Man entry is a total blast that ups the ante of the first film by having Tony ride high on the celebrity of his public declaration as well as suffer privately from deadly blood poisoning caused by his arc reactor, create a new element as well as a new suit, contend with a vengeful technical genius as well as a corporate antagonist and engage in a colossal three-way armored battle for the climax! The Hammer-Vanko storyline is clearly a tribute to one of Iron Man's signature arcs -- "Armor Wars" -- wherein Tony has to shut down every operation that's appropriated stolen StarkTech including SHIELD! This is also the only film to touch on Tony's alcoholism which should have been the subject of a whole movie as it is CENTRAL to the character. The legendary "Demon in a Bottle" arc has Tony hit rock bottom and turn over his Iron Man duties to James Rhodes which would have been some great material for both Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle as the new 'Rhodey' replacing Terrence Howard. He is supported by a nakedly envious Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, a menacingly bemused Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash, a lusciously lethal Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow and an earnest, exasperated Don Cheadle as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes aka War Machine. Garry Shandling even shows up in a small role he reprises elsewhere in the MCU as Senator Stern. The "His Girl Friday"-like romantic banter between Tony and Gwyneth Paltrow's Virginia 'Pepper' Potts remains a comic highlight with Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson serving as a great straight man. I also really like John Slattery's contribution as elder Howard Stark who looms so large in Tony's life. Leslie Bibb returns as journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen. Kate Mara has a bit part as a process server and Elon Musk appears as himself! TRIVIA: 1. Natasha's belt buckle carries her sigil which is the red angular hourglass shape that is found on the actual backs of black widow spiders. 2. The events of "Iron Man 2", "The Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" all occur during one week in MCU-time called Fury's Big Week! EASTER EGGS: 1. The half-finished, star-spangled convex object Tony uses to balance his makeshift particle accelerator is a prototype of Captain America's shield! 2. While Tony reads his psych evaluation by Natasha, one of the holo-screens shows a field reporter covering the aftermath of Hulk's Culver University rampage indicating that Hulk's adventure is still in progress while Tony has just completed his which places "Iron Man 2" earlier in the chronology than "Incredible Hulk". 3. Tony's status as a SHIELD consultant sets up the One-Shot "The Consultant" which accompanies "Incredible Hulk" recontextualizing its barroom end-credit scene with Ross. 4. The kid in the Iron Man helmet Tony saves from the drone at the Expo is a pre-Spider-Man Peter Parker! CAMEO: 1. Stan Lee shows up as Larry King complete with suspenders as Tony descends the escalator from the opening Stark Expo! END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. The end-credit scene is actually an excerpt from "Thor" which shows Coulson arriving in New Mexico at the crater made by the impact of Thor's fallen hammer, Mjolnir. The next chronological stop in the MCU is a featurette called a One-Shot that occurs at the end of "Iron Man 2" prior to the end-credit scene which is actually a clip from "Thor". "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" serves as a little prelude to "Thor" as Coulson travels to New Mexico and stumbles onto some unexpected action. It is found on the "Captain America: The First Avenger" blu-ray and DPlus.

My favorite retcon in the MCU is that Peter Parker is the kid in the Iron Man mask. That made him part of the MCU a lot sooner than Sony's contract said he was.

I think the script is a little less polished that I would like it to be (gets worse in Iron Man 3), but it sets the foundation of the MCU very nicely.

the idiocy of the first fight at the car race, is, that one simple bullet would have put vankov down for good, as he had no suit, just a contraption, that held his whips... and actually the car hit, would have shattered his lower body... but he had an stronger than superman plot(hole)armor in that moment... my most annoying moment of all iron man movies...
