IRONMAN 70.3 DES MOINES | An Average, Middle-Age, Busy, Slightly Overweight Guy's Personal Journey

The Wandering Firefighter

The Wandering Firefighter

3 жыл бұрын

Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events are not easy. The half ironman consists of the following distances: 1.2 mile swim; 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. The Wandering Firefighter was retired from these distances after finishing Ironman Boulder about seven years earlier. But he came out of retirement when he heard the Certified Piedmontese Ironman 70.3 was coming to his home city of Des Moines, Iowa. His journey to Ironman Boulder was eventfull enough...and it was not easy. He needed a lot of triathlon motivation and push yourself motivation for that one--and it was when he was younger and more fit! Will he complete Ironman 70.3 Des Moines, or will he fall short of his goal? You'll have to watch to find out!
One disclaimer: this is NOT an triathlon training video or an Ironman training video. This triathlon documentary is a personal journey--the ups, the downs, the in betweens. You know, an average, middle-age, busy, slightly overweight guy's journey. From bike rides at the Banner Lake mountain bike trails, to some open water swimming at Lake Ahquabi, join along for some laughs and some moments of questioning whether or not crossing the Des Moines Half Ironman finish line was even a possibility.
Though this channel is normally a travel vlog, this episode can serve as a traithlon vlog, as well as a Des Moines tourism video, showing just one of many fun things to do in Des Moines, Iowa. The Wandering Firefighter loves to journey around the world, but he is also all about the journey of life! Ironman 70.3 Des Moines 2021 is a great event and Ironman 70.3 Des Moines 2022 looks to be even better.
Hopefully my Ironman 70.3 journey can show you that whether your journey is to Ironman or your journey is to Ironman 70.3--YOU CAN DO IT! Triathlon goals seem to evolve all the time. You may have completed a sprint triathlon and it made you believe you could finish an olympic triathlon. And then a half ironman. And then an Ironman. Many people travel the country and travel the world for Ironman events. Go do it!
Feel free to share with anyone you know who is training for something they may be having doubts about...they may relate :)

Luckily stumbled across your channel 2 years after its production and really enjoyed the video. Very well done! I am a 64 yo Clydesdale. Ive been around triathlon for about 11 years now but only the Sprint distance. This year, 2024, Im hoping to do an Olympic distance here in Boulder, Colorado. The Iron Man distances might be doable in 2025. I am still working on improving my shuffling, I mean “running”. 😂 The scene where you arrived at the event sent a chill up my spine same as the last event I participated in! That was quite a rush. I found your journey very inspiring and motivating. It really helped me to understand some of my own mental approach to whats ahead. One thing you can count on, as you get older, stay in reasonable shape and control your weight, you will find fewer and fewer “Clydesdales” showing up at events. I placed first in 3 events last summer just showing up and participating. I did have one question: During your run, do you take walk breaks? If you do, are they regular or do you just wait until you need a break? Thanks again for a great journey.

Way to go! Such a great accomplishment!! I can completely relate. I did 3 full ironman races before kids, fresh out of college. Fast forward 8 years and 3 kids, I signed up for the NZ half ironman. I tried my hardest to train, but it is challenging with a family now, and a body that isn't the same. My race was crazy slow and painful, but definitely happy I did it! It's really neat that you documented your training journey. Great work!!!

@TheWanderingFirefighter that race was a good race for me! I have a fear of open water for some odd reason even though I do plenty of sprint triathlons... something about the open water. I liked the swim in Des Moines but I remember the water being like bath water... overall, I miss Des Moines! We are doing the Wisconsin Milkman 70.3 Sunday! Yeah, I chuckled a few times on your video. It helped me actually calm some of my nerves for this weekend. Great content once again!!

Hey! Thanks for the comment. I’ve lost about 25 pounds since this video, so that helps a lot…haha! I hit the trail, go on a hike, jump on the rower, or lift whenever I get the chance (about 5 days a week, I’d say). And I studied abroad at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton back in the day and my family took a camper van trip from Sydney to Airlie Beach before Covid. Love Brisbane, mate!
